Blackhawks Girls Destroy Merrow boys in Bracknell CVL

Date: 6th November 2009

Score: 46 - 14 (win)

The Backhawks Girls:

Top Row: Amy MacCallum, Beth Jones, Tilly Leon, Hattie Arnold, Jess Gregory

Bottom Row: Elle Hardman, Misha Blair, Scarlett Lamb, Mia Jean-Lloyd

At the start of this game coach Parry asked the girls to focus on three things:

1) With strong defence they would not lose.

2) With excellent offence they would win.

3) We would all go out and enjoy ourselves.

It can be safely stated that the squad delivered on all three.  The Merrow boys were bigger and stronger than the girls but this made no difference.  From the tip, won by the boys, the Blackhawks defence was awesome.  Led by the ferocious defence of Captain Misha Blair on Merrow's biggest player the girls simply put a strangle hold on the boys and never let go.  No sooner had the boys won the tip the girls stole the ball and drove down court.

This was the story on almost every one of the boys possessions - a quick steal, drive down court, find the open player, and score the basket.  In the first quarter baskets came from Tilly Leon and Elle Hardman.  At the other end the defensive pressure was kept up by Amy MacCallum and Mia Jean-Lloyd.  The quarter finished 10-2 to the girls.

The new squad in the second quarter keep the tempo at exactly the same level as in the first.  With baskets from Hattie Arnold, Beth Jones and Jess Gregory the boys didn't have any response.  At the other end of the court the same defensive intensity was shown especially by Scarlett Lamb limiting the boys again to only 2 points for the quarter.  At the half way point the score was 18-4.

In previous years the girls would have probably taken their foot of the gas and let the boys back into the game - but this was not the case with this squad.  The pressure was maintained and the game ended 30-14, however due to Merrow being four players down the final score was 46-14 to the Blackhawks.

Top Scorers:   Tilly Leon and Hattie Arnold with 8 points each.

Team: Misha Blair, Elle Hardman (4), Mia Jean-Lloyd (2), Tilly Leon (8), Amy MacCallum, Scarlett Lamb, Hattie Arnold (8), Jessica Gregory (6) and Beth Jones (2)
