Blackhawks U16 Girls National League 2008/2009 season

Southern Region Conference II league the U16s Girls

Sunday 22nd March 2009. Home versus Eastside Eagles

The Blackhawks had a surprise in store for the unwary Eagles – confidence and team spirit. Level at the end of the 1Q at 9-9 Woking had proved their point that they were not to be beaten. In the 2Q drift in Woking’s offence positioning allowed the Eagles defence to take off with 7 point run leading to a 6-13 turn round ending the first half 15-22 up. Amy D scored a crucial 2 pointer in the last minute of the quarter.

So the Blackhawks re-grouped at half time and came out flying with attitude. Throughout Woking had the stronger team defence that pressurised the Eagles passing lanes and stopped them finding the open shot. Fast breaks, Jess shooting an excellent 71% (5 from 7) at the free throw line in the game, and Emilee and Sophie feeding under the hoop from the good passing from their team mates, the Blackhawks overcame their traditional 3Q downer, with a 20-12 win. The 4Q finale was set up.

Everyone contributed with the noisiest 4Q in the season! Defending well against the tallest of the Eagle’s players under the basket and then everyone overcoming the Eagles full court pressure defence the whole team confidence grew. In the last 2˝ minutes of the game Woking’s fast break had a hitch with 2 speedy turnovers rather than running down the time. Coach Parry decided to take a timely TO to settle things down and Woking rallied with tough defence taking the score to 46-38;. With a tense last minute an Eagles press drew two team fouls. Scoring only 2 from 4 from the free throw line meant Woking held on to win the game 46-42.

Well done everyone!

Sunday 15th March 2009. Away versus Sevenoaks Suns

Out of the starting block with enthusiasm and skill Woking Blackhawks U16s girls took the game to the Suns and shocked them into a 9-19 deficit at the end of the 1Q. With Emilee beating her defender one on one driving to the basket by stepping round her defender as if she wasn’t there the Blackhawks stood their ground in the 2Q, but the Suns returned with a blaze bringing the score back to 34-32 at half time. The 3Q saw the Suns step up the defence and with their No. 8 and 11 starting firing in the third with two three pointers with Woking only scoring 6 points to the Suns 25.

However, with Jess and Iona continuing to show the control necessary in mid-court to play through the Suns strong double-team defence set up an interesting 4Q which the Blackhawks won 14-17. At the end the Suns won by 15 points 73-58, including 5 three pointers. The shooting percentage for the Blackhawks was a reasonable 50% hitting 27 out of about 55 shots, but free throws let Woking down hitting with only 22% (4 out of 18).

Players: Sophie, Iona, Sam, Amy D, Hannah, Emilee, Jess, Amy P. MVP – Emilee 44 mvp points.

Quarter Scores 1Q 9-19 2Q 26-16 3Q 25-6 4Q 14-17

Sunday 1st March 2009. Home versus Southampton Trailblazers

Team spirit, enthusiasm and everyone playing their part resulted in success - A Blackhawks win. Well done to the U16 Girls. With a photo shoot before they played everyone was ready to play. A crisp start with a 3 – pointer from Iona, good intensity and accurate passing in fast break transition from the starting five, including Jess, Iona, Hannah, Sophie and Kristen brought the game under control. With substitutions Christina and Emilee Blackhawks ended the 1Q 16-11 up.

With a refreshing start to a game Woking stretched their lead to 12 points in the first four minutes of the 2Q with Amy and Miriam substituting in. With a share of the field goals between Miriam, Zoe, Emilee, Sophie and all seeking rebounds was followed by another 3 – pointer from Iona. Miriam scoring 2 from 2 under the basket unfortunately then turned her ankle and had to sit out the rest of the game. Woking were left with the difficulty in dealing with the Trailblazers play maker cutting to the weak side low post using an effective screen for either a shot or pass to a cutting player.

The all important 3Q, Woking changed defence to a box and one (Kristen) to close out this play. Defence was key, putting pressure on the ball and challenging every shot and rebounding well. This did not stop the Trailblazers bringing it back to a 2 point game after four minutes cutting out Woking’s fast break, however, they did not count on Woking’s improved resilience and Jess who returned with 8 of the 14 points for Woking leading at the end of 3Q 54-47.

This led to an intense 4Q needing to maintain basket for basket with Woking having more missed opportunities than the Trailblazers and more turnovers than coach Keith wanted to see. Although the Trailblazers won the 4Q by one point and bought it back to a 4 point game on two occasions Blackhawks left the Blazers trailing 70-64 at the final buzzer.

Players: Amy D, Zoe, Hannah, Jessica, Christina, Sophie, Kristen, Miriam, Emilee, Iona. MVP – Iona 23.5 mvp points

Quarter scores: 1Q 16-11, 2Q 24-23, 3Q 14-13, 4Q 16-17

Point scorers: Iona 18, Sophie 17, Jess 14, Emilee 11, Miriam 4, Zoe 2, Hannah 2, Kristen 2.

Saturday 21st February 2009. Away versus Reading Rockets

Woking Blackhawks visited Loddon Valley Sports Centre with seven players with the enthusiasm to give the Rockets a shock. Lessons learnt from the home game against Reading Woking came out to close down the outside shooters and play tough defence under the boards. Surprised, Reading were held to 13-13 with a minute to go at the end of the first quarter. Impressive defensive rebounding by Sophie and Christina driving into space for the open shot in offense however did not prevent the 1Q ending 18-13 to Reading.  Strong play bringing the ball down the court from Jess throughout with good support from everyone. The 2Q ended with the Blackhawks down 28-22. Woking’s shooting percentage both from field goals and the foul line making the difference.

The key to the Woking’s defence continued into the 3Q and was played well by Kristen as Blackhawks played a box and one. Pressure on the ball handlers and passing well in the transition from defence to offence allowed Woking to maintain the pressure on Reading in the all important 3Q. A couple of excellent back door plays with assists from Christina to Sophie However, it wasn’t to be with a few lazy fouls Reading linked a number of scoring offences together and the quarter ended 40-30 to Reading.  With seven players Woking did not tire and rallied in the 4Q keeping pace with Reading point for point. With many opportunities at the free throw line not doing Woking any favours the points difference could not be reduced with the game ending 56-43 to Reading.

Excellent performance from all the players with less than 10 recorded turnovers and an average number of fouls provided for a successful game for everyone.

Players: Kristen, Zoe, Amy, Hannah, Jessica, Christina and Sophie. MVP – Sophie 21 mvp points

Quarter Scores: 1Q 18-13, 2Q 10-9, 3Q 12-8, 4Q 13-13

Point scorers: Sophie 16, Jess 11, Hannah 6, Christina 5, Kristen 2. Zoe 2, Amy 1

Saturday 24th January 2009. Away versus Haringey Angels

Without two of the Blackhawks’ point guards not playing due to illness Jess got the ball down court well against a tough 1Q press defence by the Angels. The Blackhawks strengthened through the 2Q at both ends of the court but not before overcoming some frustration with the calls when losing the ball to steals at close quarters by the imposing opposition. Missed opportunities led to the Blackhawks not achieving a high enough field goal shooting percentage to make an impression on the Angels lead ending the first half  37-8 down.

In the third quarter Woking took control through tougher defence with good rebounding and several steals. Sophie and Sam, both in their first game this season, along with Kristen and Hannah hustled well in defence. Waking up in the second half the Blackhawks passing in offence was with greater focus on reaching the free player. Zoe Cooke scored a 3 pointer, and Amy Dean with an open field goal under the basket to win the third 9-8. Miriam and Emilee made strong moves offensively and gathered many rebounds under both baskets throughout the game. With 31 turnovers the Blackhawks could not take advantage of all their hard team work. Much improved performance over the first match against the Angels. Well done.

Players: Kristen, Sam, Zoe, Amy, Miriam, Hannah, Emilee, Jessica, Sophie. MVP – Miriam 12 mvp points

Quarter Scores: 1Q 21-3, 2Q 16-5, 3Q 8-9, 4Q 19-4. Haringey Angels Win: 64-21

Point scorers: Miriam 6, Zoe 5, Emilee 4, Amy 2, Hannah 2, Jessica 2

Sunday 21st December 2008. Home versus Reading Rockets

1st quarter blues and 6-31 down following Reading’s explosive start, which included three 3 pointers, Blackhawks gave themselves a hard task to get back into the game. Not for the lack of opportunities with open lay-ups and short range shots not dropping in the basket.

Woking kept their heads up and played some good fast breaks and strong play under the basket.

With only seven players in the line up Blackhawks did well to keep out of foul trouble and played well in the next three quarters with only a 2 point deficit winning the fourth 19-8.

Quarter Scores: 1Q 6-31, 2Q 12-17, 3Q 4-12, 4Q 19-8

Point scorers: Emilee 12, Jess, 10, Kristen 7, Iona 6, Hannah 4, Zoe 2. MVP – Emilee 26 mvp points

Saturday 13th December 2008. Away versus Eastside Eagles

Does the weather make a difference to an indoor sport? Woking venture to north London in the pouring rain developed into frustration on the court and a soaking to the coach from a split ice pack!

Woking played good man to man defence in the first half but their shots weren’t hitting and the Eagles strong rebounding at both ends of the court ended in a half time deficit of 29-26 to the Eagles.

Playing against a strong defence in the second half frustrated Woking losing the 3Q heavily 18-7 with two players fouled out.

Early in the 4Q Woking picked up maintaining point for point after 6 minutes into the quarter. However, with Jessica injured soon thereafter the game ended in a 74-47 defeat despite some good offence play by Emilee, Amy and Iona.

Thanks to all those that travelled to support the team including Kristen who was not able to play due to the previous weeks injury.

Eagles win: 74-47 Quarter scores: 1Q 16-15, 2Q 13-11, 3Q 18-7 4Q 27-14.

Point scorers: Emilee 12, Iona 9, Christina 9, Miriam 8, Jess 4, Hannah 2 and Zoe 2. MVP – Emilee 24.5 mvp points

Sunday 7th December 2008. The U16s First NL Win

Away versus Solent Trailblazers

Woking’s sunny road trip down to Romsey, Hampshire proved worthwhile with a successful win over the Solent Trailblazers. The scoring was opened with a 3 point from Iona which was followed by the same from Kristen later in the 1Q to end the quarter up 14-15. Defence slipped slightly in the first part of the 2Q with Southampton opening up a 6 point lead. This wasn’t for the lack of effort with Woking forcing the Trailblazers into team foul after only 3 minutes into the quarter. With fighting team spirit and a change to a full court pressure defence which forced the Trailblazers to make the mistakes Woking turned a 30-24 deficit around to lead 32-38 at half time. Hannah and Christina picked off 15 of the 23 points.

The all important 3Q where games are won or lost Woking maintained there lead 42-50 against the zone defence by the Trailblazers with strong play under the basket from Miriam and scoring 4 points and Iona scoring 4 points from the field. Whilst Emilee sat out with a sore back in the 3Q Zoe and Amy put in good performance at both end of the court. Unfortunately Kristen had to go off injured with a twisted knee.

In the 4Q drives to the basket from Jess, Christina and Hannah drew the fouls against the Trailblazers zone defence and all focused to keep the pressure on at the free throw line. However, rushing into the offence allowed the Trailblazers to counter with some easy pass interception to come back at Woking.

Free throws determined the result in the last two minutes with Woking scoring 4 from 6 and Solent missing the same. Solent nearly had the game won with 5 seconds on the clock remaining but the game went into overtime following a foul on Christina in the last few seconds who then levelled the score from the free throw line. Woking came out the stronger in overtime with Emilee scoring 6 points from the field to finish 7-10 up to Woking.

Score: Woking win 80-77 Quarter scores: Q1 14-15, Q2 18-23, Q3 10-12, Q4 28-20.

Overtime 7-10 with the point scorers

Hannah 18 Jess 15 Iona 11 Christina 11 Emilee 10 Miriam 8 and Kristen 7. Also played Zoe and Amy D. MVP – Jess 23.5 points

Sunday 9th November 2008. Home versus Sevenoaks Suns.

Woking took a while in the first quarter to snap out of their Sunday reverie going down 18 points before scoring, however, this wasn’t for the lack of high percentage shooting opportunities created by effective off the ball movement and some good passing. The eight person squad pulled together with a strong help defence, good rebounding at both ends of the court and sound offensive team play to cut and drive to the basket.

All players showed their ability to take on the opponent one on one supported by some very good attacking rebounding. It was a very fast game with Woking transition from defence to offence leading to some very successful fast breaks. Woking not only had to deal with some very high percentage outside shooting by the Suns players but also quicker hands in our passing lanes led to turnovers and conceding some easy fast breaks for the Suns.

The U16s team performance in this match shows good progress into the season with a greater confidence with the need to focus on achieving a higher percentage shooting and sharpness when passing under pressure.

Score: Suns win 73-34

Quarter scores were: Q1 9 - 30, Q2 4 -18, Q3 7-10, Q4 14-15 with the points shared between Christina 10, Kristen 9, Iona 9 and Emilee 6. Also played Miriam, Amy P, Amy D and Hannah J.

Home games are played on Sundays between 2pm and 4pm in the main hall at the Winston Churchill School in Woking.
