The 2008/9 team at the Wessex Cup Final

Wildcats take the Cup - just!

Blackhawks U16 Boys 47  v Kingston Wildcats 49

Heat Academy CVL Cup Final - 22nd May 2009

The Blackhawks boys all turned up in shirts and ties for this final to show that they meant business, and once they got on court they certainly surprised the unbeaten Kingston Wildcats. Right from the tipoff it was clear that this was going to be a very tight game throughout, and so it proved to be with the score tied at half-time 26 - 26. Q3 was the same pattern,  with neither side being able to open up a comfortable lead and it ended with Wildcats just 1 point up 38 - 37 to set up a dramatic final period. With 2mins to go, the score was still neck and neck at 45-45. Disaster then stuck for the Hawks as they let Kingston's Pierce and Millward though for 2 quick baskets and a 4 point lead. In the last minute, Barber pulled 2 points back for the Hawks and despite pressing right to the buzzer they could not get the vital score they need to pull it back again to set up overtime. A game that could have gone either way right up to the end, and a worthy final.

Rockets fly far above Blackhawks

Blackhawks U16 Boys 18 v Reading Rockets 104

Wessex Junior U16 Cup Final - 10th May 2009

You have to ask why Reading Rockets would bring such a strong NL team to play in a local cup final and then play with an aggressive, rough,  full court press throughout the game even when they were 80 points ahead! It cant have been good for them, and was certainly not a final for either set of spectators to enjoy. I am sure they would say they were showing respect to the Woking side. To their credit the Blackhawks kept playing as best they could from start to finish and will have taken from it some valuable lessons and a runners up medal.

Rockets too fiery for Blackhawks

Blackhawks U16 Boys  35 - Reading Rockets 83

Wessex U16 Junior cup - 25th April 2009

Reading Rockets brought a strong National League team to Winston Churchill to meet the Blackhawks U16 boys in the Wessex cup. Right from the start it was clear that the fast, aggressive nature of the Rockets play was going to be too strong on the day for the Blackhawks who have not met this standard of team before. Very much to the Woking team's credit, they did not buckle under, but dug deep to give as good as they got and put in a formidable performance growing in confidence as they game went on. A great deal of the credit must go to Blackhawks Head Coach Costas Rakitzis (standing in for this game) who needed to bring all his experience to play in order to settle the young Woking players and get the very best out of them. They will have learnt a lot from this game and must now show that they can put in this type of performance in every game, and against whoever they are playing. Credit also to Graham Kirkpatrick, the senior referee, for keeping the game under control when it could have all boiled over at one stage.

A good game for the Woking spectators, despite not getting the result.

Q1: 12-27 Q2: 10-22 Q3: 6-13 Q4: 7-21

Blackhawks: Harris(5), Hollinshead(7), Eggar(2), Barber(6), Lucas(2), Jespersen(2), Allen(2), Hedger, Tyler(2), Dines(2), Pegg, Shephard(5)

Blackhawks ghost past the Phantoms

Blackhawks U16 Boys  77 - Farnborough Phantoms 31

Wessex U16 Junior cup - 11th April 2009

Blackhawks U16 boys were much too strong for the newly formed Phantoms and let from the start to dominate the game throughout.

Q1: 17-7 Q2: 23-9 Q3: 12-7 Q4: 25-8

Blackhawks: Harris(6), Gardener(4), Eggar(6), Barber(12), Lucas(10), Farmer(4), Allen(2), Hedger(6), Tyler(7), Dines(2), Pegg(7), Shephard(11)

Slow start prevents the Stalkers causing a major upset

Blackhawks Stalkers  70 - Cobham 95

Surrey CVL - 29th March 2009

Playing their second game of the afternoon at ACS, Cobham faced the other Blackhawks U16 Boys teams - the Stalkers. Although Stalkers were more successful at the basket than their earlier squad mates, it was a slow start by Blackhawks and again the shooting accuracy from Cobham that made the difference in the end. To be honest the Stalkers played their socks off putting in by far their best performance of the season. If it hadn't been for a bad Q1 by the Blackhawks, the score would have been a lot closer. Cobham won Q1 by 19 points and with the other 3 periods only being 1 - 3 points in it, was enough to give them the edge. Freddy Dines led the charge for Blackhawks putting in a tireless performance dominating at both ends of the court, and was unlucky to be fouled out in the 4th period.

Q1:11-30, Q2:19-21, Q3:18-19, Q4:22-25

MVP was Freddy Dines with a fantastic 48.0 MVP points to earn him a Gold Award. He pulled down 20 rebounds and was joint top scorer with 15 points alongside Ryan Gardener. Taylor Shephard, in his second game since return from injury earned a Bronze award with 28.0 MVP points ( 11 rebounds and 10 points ).

Cobham now go on to meet HSC Lanfranc in the Surrey finals courtesy of finishing 2nd in the League - we wish them well.

Stalkers: Harris(3), Moulding, Allen, Farmer(6), Hedger(13), Gardener(15), Eggar(8), Dines(15), Shephard(10)

Blackhawks Raiders  47 v  Cobham 81

Surrey CVL - 29th March 2009

The Raiders were able to match the offensive and defensive court play of the Cobham team but the difference was in finishing it all off at the Basket. The deadly shooting accuracy of the Cobham team being the telling factor in this result.

MVP was Dan Jespersen with 28.8 MVP points with an impressive 20 rebounds. Captain Rob Hollinshead earned himself 21.0 MVP points and was top scorer with 14 points.

Raiders: Sheppard, Brook(8), Barber(13), Lucas(7), Little, Tyler(4), Hollinshead(14), Pegg, Jespersen(1).

Blackhawks U16 Boys  24 - Lightwater Heat 30

Bracknell CVL - 27th March 2009

Despite a poor performance in Q3, Blackhawks were still able to go into the last period with a 9 point lead thanks to a good Q2 that saw them win it 13 - 2. So going into Q4 ahead 23 - 14, any neutral observers would have expected the Blackhawks to be able to hold on despite not playing at their best - sadly this was not the case. The physical hustle of Lightwater, and the fact they were now allowed to apply the press, enabled them to completely dominate the period, with the Blackhawks seemingly having nothing to offer in return. To the obvious delight of their supporters, Heat won the period 16 - 1 ( yes 1!) to overturn the game and claim a vital victory in the rush for playoff places.

Blackhawks Stalkers  42 - Kingston Wildcats 58

Surrey CVL - 15th March 2009

This was a match that Stalkers were perhaps not expected to win based on league on form, but as it turned out they could well have pulled it off if only they had been more accurate and composed under the basket.  With a field goal percentage across the team of just 29% ( 19 of 66) it tells the story of the difference between these 2 teams. Strong performances from Freddy Dines, Taylor Shephard and Elliot Farmer led the way for the Blackhawks.

MVP: Freddy Dines with 17.5 MVP points

Team: Gardener (14) Harris (4), Farmer(4), Eggar(4), Allen(4), Dines(4), Shephard(4), Hedger(4), Moulding.

Blackhawks U16 Boys  36 - Cookham Comets 30

Bracknell CVL - 13th March 2009

A fairly un-inspiring performance by the U16 boys at Bracknell but they still managed to grind out a win against a determined and improving Cookham Comets.

MVP and Top Scorer was Dan Jespersen with 22.7 MVP points and 9 points in the game.

Team: Hollinshead(1), Lucas(8), Barber(3), Jespersen(9), Farmer(4), Eggar(4), Tyler(2), Allen, Gardener(5), Hedger

Blackhawks Stalkers  39 - HSC Lanfranc 92

Surrey CVL - 8th March 2009

The Stalkers can be proud of the fact that they kept battling throughout this game as they faced the fast and physical style of top of the league Lanfranc. Taylor Sheppard played his first game of the year having just come back from injury and was unlucky to be fouled out, but showed that his height will help this young team. Full report and Stats to follow.

Blackhawks U16 Boys  64 - Farnborough Phantoms 30

Bracknell CVL - 13th February 2009

The U16 boys have not had a match since the 18th January and looked a bit rusty in this Friday night encounter at Bracknell Leisure Centre, but were still good enough to cruise to a sound victory against the new boys in the Heat CVL this season, Farnborough Phantoms.

MVP: Dan Jespersen with 20.7 MVP points from 14 rebounds and 8 points

Team and Scorers: Hollinshead(5), Dean, Lucas(12), Jespersen(8), Pegg, Barber(12) Tyler(4), Gardener(8), Eggar(5), Hedger, Farmer, Allen.

Blackhawks Stalkers 66 v Mole Valley Phoenix 94

Surrey CVL - 18th January 2009

The Stalkers are improving all the time and put in a great performance against Mole Valley Phoenix who can boast to have National League players in their team. Despite being behind from the start, the Blackhawks never gave up and did well to be only 20 points behind at half-time. The battling Stalkers continued to press and can be proud of the fact that they kept the second half deficit to just 8 points and actually won the last quarter by 3 points. The Phoenix looked comfortable throughout and ran out worthy winners by 28 points.

MVP: Joint MVP's both with 29.0 points were Rob Harris (top scorer with 20) and Max Eggar

Team and Scorers: Hedger(5), Farmer(5), Allen(2), Eggar(16), Gardener(9), Moulding, Harris(20), Dines(9)

Blackhawks Raiders 51 v Reigate Falcons 75

Surrey CVL - 18th January 2009

In the 2nd game of the day at Hinchley Wood it was the turn of the other U16 team ( Raiders) to take on Reigate Falcons. Unlike their fellow squad, this was a game that was winnable for the Blackhawks, but too many missed attempts and the lack of a big man to take on Reigate's man Tarawe cost them dearly. Both team started slowly and the score was just 9-7 to Reigate at the end of the first period. 8 points for Tarawe in the 2nd period saw Reigate extend their lead to 15 points by half-time. Despite a fantastic performance by Captain Rob Hollinshead, Blackhawks could just not get back at the Falcons and never made up the gap.

MVP: Rob Hollinshead with 25.5 mvp points, Top Scorer was Tate Barber with 16 points.

Team and Scorers: Hollinshead(12), Pegg(4), Sheppard, Dean, Tyler(6), Lucas(9), Little, Brook, Barber(16), Jones(4).

Blackhawks U16 Boys 36 - Kingston Wildcats 45

Bracknell CVL - 9th January 2009

This top of the table clash between the 2 unbeaten sides in the Bracknell Heat U16 CVL, lived up to expectation and was a great game of basketball with the upper hand changing from quarter to quarter. Blackhawks got off to the better start and had 6 points on the board before Kingston replied. A low scored first period ended with Blackhawks 8 - 3 ahead. In Q2, Wildcats put out their best pair of players together (Pierce and Millward) and they turned the score around for their team by scoring 10 points between them for Kingston to go in at half-time 2 points ahead with the score at 14 - 16. The Woking starting 5 were back on court to start the second half and they took back the lead after thanks to baskets by Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber, Rob Hollinshead, Max Eggar and Dan Jespersen.

With Blackhawks now 3 points ahead the stage was set for a dramatic final period. However, Kingston's dynamic duo of Pierce and Millward were in no mood to give up and they quickly hit Woking with 5 baskets without reply to give them a commanding 8 point lead going into the last 2 minutes of the game. A late brace of baskets by Tate Barber had little impact on the final score and Blackhawks will view this as 2 points lost in a disappointing last quarter.

Team and Scorers: Harris, Dines(2), Eggar(4), Barber(6), Lucas(6), Farmer(2), Allen(2), Hedger, Tyler(4), Hollinshead(4), Pegg, Jespersen(6).

Blackhawks U16 Boys 68 - Solent Kestrels 25

Bracknell CVL - 19th December 2008

Straight from the tipoff this game never looked in doubt for the Blackhawks as they stormed to a 22 point lead without reply. This was a young, inexperienced Solent team, but to their credit they never gave up in what turned out to be a very one-sided game. To the Blackhawks credit they gave Kestrels the respect of continuing to play at full pace, and it was their continuous fast-breaks and deadly accurate passing that did all the damage. A great team performance that impressed the Woking Head Coach Costas Rakitzis who was standing in for the holidaying Emeka Okorocha. This team is now finally starting to click together and they can look forward to 2009 with relish as they go into the Christmas break undefeated and top of the Bracknell league, but with a tough game against Kingston on 9th January. stats to follow.

Q1: 24-2, Q2: 14-6, Q3: 16-6, Q4: 14-11

Team and Scorers: Gardener(8), Eggar(8), Barber(6), Lucas(14), Allen, Hedger(4), Tyler(10), Hollinshead(8), Pegg(4), Jespersen(6)

Blackhawks U16 Boys 42 - Spelthorne Atoms 28

Bracknell CVL - 12th December 2008

Matches between these two local rivals are usually a tense, gripping contest; but despite having a noisy, enthusiastic team of supporters to cheer their side on, Atoms were unable to make any serious impression on a sound ( if un-inspiring) performance by the Blackhawk u16 boys. The Woking side never really got into their full flow, but led from start to finish and always did enough to just keep themselves in front. Scorers and stats to follow. MVP was Caspar Lucas with 17.0 MVP points, followed closely by Dan Jespersen with 13.2.

Team and Scorers: Hollinshead(2), Lucas(9), Jespersen(9), Pegg, Barber(4), Gardener, Eggar(4), Allen, Hedger(5), Harris(2), Dines(2), Farmer

Stalkers pull it back from the dead to stun Warriors

Blackhawks Stalkers 46 - Feltham Warriors 44

Surrey CVL - 7th December 2008

A disastrous first quarter for the Stalkers saw them go behind by 14 points and it did not look as if is was going to be their day. Coach Okorocha had other ideas though after his disappointing 1st game of the day by Raiders. They slowly over the next 2 periods played themselves back into the game and were just 5 points behind going into the last period. With 5 minutes left to go in the the game they took the lead for the first time thanks to 2 baskets from Rob Harris, 1 for Lewis Starkey in his debut game, 1 from James Allen and a 3-pointer from tireless point guard Alex Hedger. The game was on a knive-edge and now went right down to the buzzer as Blackhawks held on for a narrow 2 point victory. A great comeback with great performances throughout the team. Stats and scorers to follow.

Raiders let 14 point lead slip in the third as Phoenix rise

Blackhawks Raiders 52 - Mole Valley Phoenix 62

Surrey CVL - 7th December 2008

After an evenly contested first half ( that ended with Raiders 5 points up)  the game was turned around in the 3rd quarter as having increased their lead to 14 points Blackhawks then went to sleep for 5 mins in which Phoenix scored 15 points with only one point in reply from the Raiders. The stage was set for an exciting last period with both teams on 45 points, and so it was, with both teams neck and neck until the last minute of the match. A sudden 8 points by Mole Valley's J. Hurtado saw them take game and Woking can only look back at what might have been. Scorers and Stats to follow.

Blackhawk U16 Boys 52 - Guildford Heat B 14

Bracknell CVL - 21st November 2008

Woking have only entered one team in the Heat Academy CVL this season and so it was a mixture of both Raiders and Stalkers that took the court for their first game at Bracknell Leisure Centre. From the start the Blackhawks never looked like they were going to be in trouble, but it took them time to get used to the smaller courts. Full match report to follow.

Blackhawks Raiders 67 - Kingston Wildcats 78

Surrey CVL - 16th November 2008

This was a highly competitive match between two evenly matched sides and one that the Blackhawks will feel they could have won. Their downfall was a failure in the first half to convert the easiest and most basic of lay-ups, whereas Kingston had no such trouble at the basket. Kingston held a 9 point leads through all of the first quarter thanks to top players Pearce and Milward.

The 2nd quarter was much the same pattern with Blackhawks falling further behind despite the efforts of Caspar Lucas and Tate Barber to keep them in the game. The Woking side were 14 points down at half-time.  The second-half  looked much more lively for the Blackhawks as Barber again and Captain Rob Hollinshead combined to keep in touch with the Wildcats, but despite winning the 4th qtr they could not make up the early deficit.

Tate Barber had arguably his best game for the club, scoring 25 points and amassing a very impressive 43.5 MVP points to earn himself a Gold award. Captain Rob Hollinshead also had a great game, scoring 15 points and earning himself 26.0 MVP points. Click score above for full Stats sheet.

Team and Scorers: Raiders: Dean, Lucas(6), Tyler(10), Pegg(7), Hollinshead(15), Sheppard(2), Brook(2), Jones, Barber(25), Little.

Blackhawks Stalkers 42 - Sunbury Sonics 87

Surrey CVL - 2nd November 2008

The Stalkers never really got going in this game and will be disappointed that they didn't do better. New Blackhawks this season Rob Harris and Freddy Dines stood out and scored 23 points between them. For the second week running they were unable to stop their opponents big man and Huse scored 29 points for the Sonics. Team and Scorers:

Stalkers: Moulding, Gardener(4), Harris(11), Allen(5), Dines(12), Farmer(2), Alexander, Hedger(8)

Blackhawks Raiders 32 - Lanfranc 109

Blackhawks Stalkers 40 - Reigate Falcons 95

Surrey CVL - 26th October 2008

Both U16 teams battled hard against tough opposition at Chessington Sports Centre in the Surrey Central Venue League, but they failed to make their effort count. Raiders were up against last years champions Lanfranc and were well behind from the start and never looked like being in contention for the game despite never giving up. The Croydon side had strength in depth and kept up a constant aggressive defence and lethal offence. A weakened Stalkers team also went behind early on against Reigate and never looked liked catching up despite great effort and some strong moments in the game. They had no answer to the  Reigate big man, Tarawe, who scored 39 of his sides points and McKensie who scored 24 -  these 2 players did all the damage for the Falcons. All the young Blackhawks players will have learned a great deal from these games and can take the lessons forward. Teams and scorers:

Raiders: Hollinshead, Jones(2), Sheppard(2), Jespersen(6), Lucas(5), Dean(5), Tyler(4), Brook(8)

Stalkers: Harris(8), Allen(7), Farmer(4), Dines(6), Eggar(4), Hedger(11)

Blackhawk U16 Stalkers v Blackhawk U16 Raiders 43 - 67

Surrey CVL - 12th October 2008

The Surrey CVL started for both of the Blackhawk U16 teams today as they met head to head at Chessington Sports Centre. With all the players knowing each other well and with all the same plays in motion it was always going to be a tight game. The problem for Stalkers was accuracy and composure around the basket as too many easy baskets were missed.

Teams and Scorers:

Stalkers:

Gamble (4), Gardener (2), Harris (13), Allen (4), Farmer (2), Eggar (4), Hedger (14), Moulding.

Raiders:

Hollinshead (5), Tyler (10), Pegg (12), Dean (6), Jespersen (2), Lucas (20), Brook (2), Barber (8), Jones (2), Sheppard, Little.
