Blackhawks Under-10s Win Surrey Cup in overtime!
Woking Blackhawks - Cobham 16-14
Surrey CVL, 26-Apr-09: On a day when baskets became a precious commodity due to superb defending from both sides, the little Blackhawks did the Club proud by winning the Surrey CVL Cup to make it a double, having already won the League thanks to a 20-game winning streak.
It was not all plain sailing though. Cobham have been edging closer to the Woking youngsters little by little throughout the season and they nearly spoilt the party by going 12-8 ahead at the end of the third quarter. Having had the lead 6-2 after the first period and looking good (but by no means safe) at half time with the score at 8-4, the third period sent shockwaves through the Woking supporters as they saw their team give away 8 points without return.
A tactical substitution was called for and the Blackhawks were up and running again in the fourth. Baskets from Simon Post and George Paisley were critical to levelling the score at 14-14 at the end of normal time and secured the overtime with the psychological advantage now being with the Blackhawks. Simon Post went on one of his legendary runs in and around the key to put away the winner with 37 seconds to go. The defence did its job superbly and the celebrations on the final buzzer crowned a superb season for the newly-formed and yet undefeated Under-10 squad.
Our thanks go to the mums, dads and other family members and friends of the players who have been a rock of support throughout the season. Long may it continue!

Getting Better But Still 5 Short of a Win
Woking Blackhawks - Solent Kestrels 20-25
Bracknell CVL, 23-Jan-09: Things are getting better and there were flashes of brilliance during this crucial game at Bracknell but the Blackhawks of 2009 are a shadow of the Blackhawks of 2008. A last-minute unavailability call from one of the players resulted in a 2-point penalty.
With another tough fixture against Cobham, the selected Blackhawks will have to step up their game and deliver a good result.

Disappointing Performance by Off-form Blackhawks
Woking Blackhawks - Spelthorne Atoms 13-17
Bracknell CVL, 16-Jan-09: This was the second poor performance in a row by the young Blackhawks who missed collectively at least 20 shots from under the basket.
We hope that this run will not last long and that the team will come out fighting!

Woking Blackhawks - Sunbury Sonics 18-59
Surrey CVL, 21-Dec-08: With a fixture so close to Christmas it was no wonder the Blackhawks just about managed to gather a flock of 5 players and stand against a full-strength Sonics squad at Chessington this Sunday.
Woking was penalised 25 points for being 5 players short but the five players who were available put up a brave fight and did themselves proud.

The Revenge of the Wildcats
Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Wildcats 14-16
Bracknell CVL, 05-Dec-08: This was an uncharacteristically poor performance by the young hawks who missed their MVP Jim Keneally badly.
On the positive side, tonight was the first time Josh Hunt scored in a game. We all hope there will be many more to come!
4 bonus points were awarded to the Blackhawks as Kingston were two players short of a full squad.

Woking Tame the Wildcats
Surrey CVL, 23-Nov-08: Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Wildcats 37-26
Having just beaten Cobham, and Cobham having just beaten the Blackhawks, the Wildcats could be forgiven for thinking they might have an easy task ahead of them when they took to the centre circle for tip-off against the Blackhawks.
But Simon Post, Jasper Post, Remi Brand, Jim Keneally and Ben Clifton had other ideas. Stung by the earlier defeat, these gutsy young Blackhawks produced some great basketball and overpowered the Wildcats by 11-8.
The second quarter was always going to be difficult but this time the second five contained their opponents much better losing the quarter only 2-8.
With the half-time score at 13-16, Coach Costas was not in the mood of losing another game on the same morning so back came the starting five who simply ran amok in the 3rd scoring 12 points and conceding only 2.
Confidence was now sky-high and there were times when these 11 and 10-year olds produced some very exciting basketball taking the 4th period 12-8 and the game 37-26.
Most valuable player (MVP) was Jim Keneally who found the basket with more ease in this game scoring 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. It all suddenly clicked into place for Ben Clifton too, who impressed with 10 points of his own and 4 rebounds. Great job as usual at the Point by Simon Post.

Cobham Get their Revenge at Chessington
23-Nov-08: Woking Blackhawks - Cobham 30-34
The clashes between these two friendly clubs have always produced close results and this it was Cobham's turn to taste victory having just lost their first game of the morning to Kingston.
The young hawks found difficult to get going and with Keneally firing blanks, it was time for Jasper Post to take over the scoring for the Blackhawks.
The game started well enough for Woking with Simon Post, Jasper Post, Remi Brand, Jim Keneally and Ben Clifton ending the 1st quarter 14-6. But Cobham fielded Z Hassman in the 2nd period and it made all the difference as Woking found it very hard to contain him. The first half score was 14-22 and it took a while to recover from the shock and get back into the game.
It was a spirited comeback and it was all going well in the 4th quarter but the Blackhawks simply ran out of time and lost the game 30-34.
Most valuable player (MVP) was Jasper Post scoring 16 points.
Q1: 14-6 Q2: 0-16 Q3: 6-8 Q4: 10-4

Woking Take the Heat out of Guildford
21-Nov-08: Woking Blackhawks - Guildford Heat 26-11
The result was never in doubt in this contest but coach Costas was hoping for a better performance from his young Blackhawks.
S.Post, J.Post, Betts, Hunt and Clifton started well with Ben Clifton and Simon Post sharing the points in the 1st quarter.
But it was Lamey, Payne, Bounds, Keneally and Brand who really took it to the Heat winning the quarter 10-0 with rampant Jim Keneally scoring 6 of the points. Thomas Bounds and Isaac Lamey added to the score, finishing the 1st half with a comfortable 18-4 lead.
Things did not quite go to plan in the 3rd when Woking lost 2-0. The ship was steadied in the 4th when Jim Keneally worked his magic again and Ben Clifton finished the game exactly the way he started - with two great baskets.
They say it's a sign of good team when they scrap out results like this but there are a lot of things that the young Blackhawks will have to work on at practice so that next time not only they get the win but they also prove they can put in a great performance.
Most valuable player (MVP) was once again the irrepressible Jim Keneally with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Q1: 8-4 Q2: 10-0 Q3: 0-2 Q4: 8-5 Final score: 26-11
Blackhawks: Ben Clifton (8), Chris Betts, Isaac Lamey (2), Jim Keneally (10), Josh Hunt, Matthew Payne, Remi Brand, Simon Post (4), Thomas Bounds(2).
U10s Make us Proud Again by
Winning Surrey Tournament
16-Nov-08: Woking Blackhawks U10 boys absolutely destroyed their opposition at
the u10s tournament at Chessington, organised by the Surrey Basketball
Association.
There were times when the young hawks had to be held back particularly against
Mole Valley, "the cutest team I've ever seen" according to coach Samantha Betts
who seems to have the right recipe for winning at this level.
This was a great performance by all the little Blackhawks but Simon Post, George
Paisley and Joe were particularly impressive. This a good crop of youngsters
coming through!

Matthew Payne, James Pedley, Isaac Lamey, Gabriel Logan, Joe.

14-Nov-08. Another epic game between these two friendly clubs ends with a close win for the Blackhawks. As both coaches put emphasis on the defence, the score was kept at a modest level but the excitement was right up there with Woking clinching victory seconds before the buzzer went.
MVP was Jim Keneally scoring 11 points but Remi Brand also impressed with his performance.

Triumph in their first-ever Tournament
Under-10 Spelthorne Atoms Tournament (24/05/08)
Woking Blackhawks U10 boys played their first official basketball games as a
team on Saturday, when they took part in an Under-10 tournament organised by
Spelthorne Atoms, at the Matthew Arnold Sports Centre in Staines.
This was also the first outing for newly-qualified coach Samantha Betts who
managed to find the right mix of game-coaching and allowing the little hawks an
amount of freedom to enjoy themselves on the court.
The boys had to play four very good teams from Spelthorne Atoms, Kingston
Wildcats, Guildford Heat and Sunbury Rockets. It was not going to be easy but
the objective was to give the boys as much court time as possible and let them
have as much fun as possible. That's what summer leagues are all about!
Against all expectations, this team went on to win all four of their games and
team manager David Betts was happy to chat to parents some of whom admitted
their had never seen their children apply themselves to such a degree before.
"These boys had a very good afternoon playing basketball and thoroughly enjoyed
themselves. They put everything they had into the games and came away from the
tournament undefeated picking up medals for themselves and the first U10 trophy
for the Club." Betts beamed after the final against the Atoms.
This was a truly remarkable performance by the little Blackhawks, who were a
credit to the Club as they shone with their attitude off the court too. The
future of basketball looks bright in Woking!

Vlassak, George Paisley, Matthew Payne and Max Dorrell.
