Hunters Downed in 3rd by Warriors  (30/03/2008)

Hunters 67 Windsor Warriors 75

A 3rd quarter collapse and bad decisions down the stretch cost Woking this game, and consequently the chance at 3rd place. With only 2 games left this season, The Hunters are looking to finish strong and secure 4th place.

Hunters Split Back-To-Back   (18/03/2008)

  • Hunters 71 Andover Breakers 25

(16/03/2008)

    • A complete and utter demolition job on both ends of the court! Woking never let up on an undermanned Andover team. With 5 Woking players scoring in double figures, this was a well balanced attack that the Breakers just had no answer for. Fans on the night were treated to some spectacular plays from Mark Allum and Chris Paice, and a solid outing from Francis Long and Rick Lansdell.
  • Hunters 88 REME Arborfield 91

(17/03/2008)

    • Everyone may have had a good game on paper, but the Blackhawks just had no answer for REME's 3 point shooter. A few lessons were learned from this one... 1) hit your free throws. The Hunters struggled to hit 7 of 19 from the charity stripe. 2) keep your head. Frustration and temper got in the way of Woking playing their best basketball. 3) stop the shooter. REME's top scorer exploded for 37 points, despite the best efforts of Mark Allum and KC Chukwuogo. They won't have it so easy next time.

These results put The Hunters in a fight for 3rd place in Division 2, with Windsor Warriors also poised to take the position. Woking play Windsor on the 30th of March, which will probably determine who ends up on top. The game is at 5:15pm at Woking Leisure Centre. Bring a friend and support The Hunters in this important game!

Hunters Update   (22/02/2008)

The last few weeks has been an up and down affair for the Blackhawk Hunters. Plenty of games, lots of action, some disappointments and some woes.

Injuries – January and February saw a slew of complaints hit the Hunters, ranging from one-game niggles to problems requiring surgery. Here is a breakdown of who’s missing with longer term problems:

  • Phil Coulthard – Broken wrist (18/01/08)
  • Rick Lansdell – strained back ligament (4/01/08)
  • Stanko Markovic – damaged knee ligament (8/01/08)

Both Rick and Phil are healing nicely, and have begun to train again with a view to playing before the season ends. Stanko will likely not play again this season. The teams best wishes go out to him for a speedy recovery.

Games – The Hunters have played 4 games since the 19th of January. Here’s how they went:

  • Hunters 74 Farnham Vipers 43
    • Woking dominated from start to finish, led by an astounding 8 off 8 shooting night from Francis Long.
  • Hunters 76 Slough Scorpions 41
    • Mark Allum led 3 Woking players in double figures with 24 points – including 2 for 2 from 3-point range – to give the Hunters another runaway victory.
  • Hunters 85 Woodley Wildboars 57
    • Mark Allum continued his offensive barrage with another 24 points, and Chris Paice added 22,for the shorthanded Woking team. 5 players scored in double figures to help the team rally in the 4th quarter and blow the game wide open.
  • Hunters 67 Basingstoke Bobcats 95
    •  Only one team came to play on the night, and it wasn’t Woking. The Bobcats unloaded a 3-point barrage at Woking Leisure Centre, and despite some great shooting by Jason Dunderdale (4 of 8 from downtown) and Mark Allum’s normal productive night (14 points, 5 of 7 shooting, 4 of 4 free throws) the Hunters had no reply and had their 4-game winning streak snapped.

The Hunters are now 10 and 6 for the season, and still a strong threat to finish in 3rd place. We next play on Mothers Day, against the Camberley Blue Jays. Why not bring your mum along to support?

Camberley Old Pros Vs Hunters 81 - 42   (18/1/2008)

The crowds were out in force to see the Hunters take on the Camberley Old Pros on Friday night, and what a show they saw!

Woking were relentless from the outset, scoring 12 points before Camberley even scored a field goal. All 5 starters got in on the act, with Chris Paice dominating the fastbreak, and both Paice and Mark Allum clamping down on defence.

The Blackhawks also held their own in the half court game, despite starting centre Ben Woods picking up early fouls. The zone defence held the Old Pros to only 9 points in the first quarter.

The second was a similar affair, with Nick Mandafounis taking over the scoring, and Bors Hulesh and Phil Coulthard pressuring on defence. Woking moved the ball effortlessly, always finding the open man, knocking down good shots and rebounding for second tries when they missed.  By the end of the second half, Camberley were 2 points short of Woking’s first quarter total!

It was more of the same for the rest of the game. Woking started to relax and enjoy the game. There were wonderful dishes in the key, fantastic moves to the basket, a 3-pointer on the fast break, and even an off-the-backboard alley-oop pass! One of the defensive highlights was a fantastic block by KC Chukwuogo that went flying. The ball was recovered the following afternoon in the Knaphill area.

Best performances came from Chris Paice and Francis Long, who had their way on both ends of the court all night. There were no underachievers though, and the Hunters will look to take this momentum into their home game next week against the Farnham Vipers. Hope to see you there!

Hunters Vs Windsor Warriors 2s 77 - 68   (13/12/2007)

The Hunters returned to their winning ways again on Thursday night, overcoming a 9 point first quarter deficit to hand Windsor only their 3rd loss of the season.

"We play better when we are chasing down a lead," said Coach Rick Lansdell after the game. "We had the hunger and the will to win tonight, and it paid off."

Chris Paice scored 20 points and added 5 steals for the Hunters, while Andy Farmer added 15 points and 10 boards. Ben Woods pulled down a phenomenal 19 rebounds, while also scoring 10 points. The difference in this game was the free throw shooting though, led by Phil Coulthard (80%), Andy Farmer (80%) and KC Chukwuogo (75%).

As Windsor's lead dwindled and then disappeared in the 2nd quarter, their composure began to follow. Woking began getting under their skin mentally, thanks to a couple of technical fouls called against Windsor. A brave fight back at the end of the game wasn't enough to eclipse their collapse. Thanks to 2 clutch 3-pointers from Paice, and some awesome free throw shooting under pressure from Paice and Coulthard, Woking not only held off the charge, but actually increased their lead.

The Hunters shot a fantastic 56% from the field, and 62% from the free throw line - the first time they've shot better than 50% from there. With 5 players scoring in double figures, and 3 players rebounding in double figures, this was always going to be Woking's game.

A great game to watch, a great game on paper and a great result for the Hunters, who will take a 6 and 4 record into the Christmas break.

Andover Breakers Vs Hunters 52 - 53   (23/11/2007)

A long and cold trip into the deepest darkest depths of Andover resulted in an agonising defeat on the last shot of the game. Woking squandered a very comfortable lead in the last quarter to enable the Breakers to steal this one.

A brave effort from the Hunters for 3 quarters. Battling through slippery floors, trampoline-like rings and “creative” refereeing. Unfortunately, 3 quarters weren’t enough.

Hunters Vs Camberley Blue Jays 78 - 59   (16/11/2007)

A good display of classic Blackhawks basketball enabled Woking to take a much needed win against a very short handed Camberley team.

As often seems to be the case, Woking got off to what looked like a great start, but the Blue Jays managed to hang in there the whole time. Coulthard moved the ball well and pushed the tempo, while Paice, Woods and Long took all the scoring honours for the Hunters. The first quarter ended with Woking on top, but only by 5.

A stuttering offence in the 2nd quarter brought the Blue Jays within one point going into halftime, but that was all Woking needed to inspire them. The 3rd quarter was a fantastic offensive effort, sparked by the defence of Long, Paice, and Okorocha. 28 points from that quarter alone was enough to put the Blue Jays firmly in the rear view mirror.

Great efforts from Francis Long, Chris Paice and Ben Woods, to name but a few. All in all, a nice win for the Hunters, who will look to continue their form against Andover next week.

Basingstoke Bobcats Vs Hunters 62 - 51   (7/11/2007)

A lacklustre performance from the Hunters enabled the Basingstoke Bobcats to run away with this one in the 3rd quarter. Despite good games from Coulthard, Long and Allum, as well as an exceptional game from Woods (20 rebounds!), Woking couldn’t do what was needed.

Woking next play on Friday at home against Camberley.

Hunters Vs Woodley Wildboars  65 - 58   (28/10/2007)

Playing at their “home away from home” – Winston Churchill School – The Blackhawks entered this game looking to secure their first consecutive victories of the season.

The game started well for Woodley. Scoring 2 unanswered baskets early. Woking responded with baskets from Lansdell and Long, and a three pointer from Paice. Coulthard was then able to open up the game with 7 straight points of his own, making it 23-12 in Woking’s favour at the end of 1 quarter.

The second started well, with Woodley failing to score a basket until a free throw halfway through the quarter. The Hunters took their foot off the pedal here, and allowed a further 15 to be scored in the period. Luckily, they kept the lead, but only by 4.

Then came the 3rd, where it became the Francis Long show. Scoring 15 points in the period, Long destroyed the Wildboars’ defence almost single handed, while disrupting their offence with regularity. Great defence by Paice and Mwinjilo also helped Woking’s effort, and they managed to extend the lead to 13.

The Hunters looked shaky towards the end of the game – allowing Woodley within 5 points again – but Long and Paice continued their dominance to close this one out on top. Despite the collapse in the 2nd and 4th, plenty of positives came out of this one. Improved rebounding, better penetration and some great hustle gave Woking the edge they needed to end it.

Slough Scorpions Vs Hunters  59 - 71   (17/10/2007)

This was a close game from the start to the finish… well, almost! The Hunters seemed to be on top of things in the first quarter, but somehow couldn’t take the lead from Slough. Fantastic offence from Phil Coulthard got things going for Woking offensively, with Chris Paice adding a few of his own. The Scorpions kept finding holes in the Woking defence though, and ended the quarter up by 6.

Changing the defensive set, the Blackhawks asserted themselves more in the second quarter, despite missing free throws aplenty. Mark Allum lead the charge, and Woking won the quarter and closed the gap to 2 points going into the half.

The third was a tie, with both teams scoring 14 points. Things seemed to be going Woking’s way for most of the quarter, with Paice, Long and Woods combining for 10 unanswered points. However, some defensive lapses in the waning minutes gave Slough an 8-2 run to end the quarter how it started – 2 points up.

This is where the game stopped being close. Woking came out in the 4th and destroyed the Scorpions. Andy Farmer sparked an offensive barrage from mid range, hitting for eight points in the quarter. Allum and Paice followed suit, and Ben Woods began to dominate offensively down low. On the other end of the floor, the defence was working wonders. Pressure on the ball handlers forced Slough to make bad decisions and turn the ball over. Good stay-at-home man to man defence took the main threats out of the game. Frustration was beginning to show for the Scorpions, and lead to some turnovers down the stretch. The last nail in the coffin was a buzzer beating 3-pointer off one foot, off the backboard and in from Mark Allum. Sadly, the refs called it a 2-pointer, but it was academic. Woking cruised home to a 12 point victory and improve to 3 and 2 for the season.

Some demons from the Reading game were exorcised tonight. The offence looked a lot better, the defence tightened up when it needed to and the team combined for only 8 fouls! Great performance all round.

Right, who’s next?

Hunters Vs Basingstoke Blizzards  58 - 76 (28/09/2007)

Freshly returned to the 2nd division, the Blizzards were looking to make short work of Woking on their way to re-promotion. Despite lacklustre basketball from the Hunters, the first half was a close affair – ending with the Blizzards up by 3 points.

This game was lost in the 3rd quarter, with a scoring deficit of 32-9. There was no coming back from that for Woking, despite a 22-14 4th quarter. This one ended with Basingstoke on top 76-58.

Farnham Vipers - Blackhawk Hunters  64 - 75  (15-Sep-07)

After a series of pre-season wins, the Blackhawk Hunters started their season today against the Farnham Vipers. The Vipers wasted no time in establishing themselves in the first quarter, with two 3-point plays and a jump shot, giving them an early lead. The Hunters weren’t done yet though, and Mark Allum, Oskar Ociepa and Chris Paice quickly put their stamp on the game. The 1st quarter was a close affair though, and Woking ended it up by 3 points.

Farnham regrouped in the second quarter, holding the Blackhawks to a mere 12 points and taking a 7-point lead into halftime.

Woking came out in the 3rd quarter with new defensive tactics and a score to chase. Great defence led to great offence and the Hunters stormed through the quarter behind Rick Lansdell’s 10 points and 6 from Chris Paice. Paice and Ociepa put the exclamation mark on the Blackhawks' effort with a fantastic fast break alley-oop.

Blackhawk defence was the story in the 4th quarter. Holding Farnham to just 8 points, Woking closed out the game in fine style and cruised to their first win of the season. Fantastic defensive efforts by Ociepa, Paice, Coulthard, Mwinjilo and Allum, as well as great rebounding from Woods and Lansdell, combined to give the Hunters the edge they needed to put this one away.

Hunters: M Allum (10), R Mwingilo (3), B Woods (6), O Ociepa (13), C Paice (14), P Coulthard (1), R Lansdell (18), D Fellows (4), J Dunderdale (6).

Hunters - Cranleigh  76 - 36  (17-Aug-07)

It took a while for the Hunters (with a few Flyers thrown in for good measure) to get going but there was never any doubt about the outcome of this friendly designed to ease the Blackhawks into the new season at the Woking Leisure Centre, their new home venue.

None of the Blackhawks made it into the honours but Chris Paice and Oskar Ociepa came mighty close (19.8 and 19.5 MVP points respectively). Rick Lansdell pulled down 12 rebounds.

Hunters: M Allum (5), R Mwingilo, D Knode (5), B LeTourneau (9), O Ociepa (12), C Paice (12), F Long (10), P Coulthard (2), J Grainger (9), E Okorocha (8), R Lansdell (4), D Fellows, S Markovic.

Season 2006/7

Hunters tie at the top but miss out on promotion to Division 1

Hunters, Aztec Lemmings and Farnborough Phantoms all tied with 30 points at the top of one of the most exciting Leagues in the country.

According to the 3-way tie rule, if three teams tie, the goal difference just among those three come into play. As a result of this, and mainly due to our first-round 30-point defeat in the hands of Farnborough, they go Top and the Hunters finish 3rd.

What a great season this has been for the Hunters who exceeded their 5th place objective set by Coach Costas and came within a whisker of getting promoted.

MVP is Chris Paice

Top Scorer is Ben LeTourneau

Team Player is ... well, you have to wait for this one until the 19th of May (Awards Morning at WCS).

WELL DONE and THANK YOU for making the Club proud!

Blackhawks: R Lansdell, M Allum, N Mandafounis, P Coulthard, B LeTourneau, O Ociepa, A Farmer, B Woods, D Rakitzis, C Paice.

Hunters beat the buzzer and the Phantoms to tie top spot!

Blackhawk Hunters - Farnborough Phantoms 85 - 83   (24-Apr-07)

This was an absolutely awesome game for everyone in the hall. Considering the circumstances and what was at stake, both sets of players, coaches and supporters enjoyed the ups and downs of the score in good spirit.

Having lost to the Phantoms by 30 points in December, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Hunters would feel intimidated or nervous about the game. On the contrary. The Blackhawks came out with all guns blazing and put in a truly spirited performance which took the Phantoms by surprise.

Every pass and every rebound was contested and despite Lansdell getting into early foul trouble and missing Chris Paice (on holiday), the Hunters looked every inch an accomplished side.

Farnborough had no answer to Oskar Ociepa who went on to score 43 of the Hunters' 85 points and 3 minutes from time, Woking were 6 points ahead.

But as things go in basketball, the Hunters found themselves down by one point with 4 seconds on the clock.

The ball got to Ben LeTourneau who went up for a 3-pointer and sunk a buzzer-beater, which took the officials a good 5 minutes to confirm.

This was the kind of game and the kind of season movies are made of.

Last game, last shot and the Hunters could top the League depending on how the Phantoms do tomorrow against the Blue Jays (to whom they have lost twice already this season) and how the rules for three teams tied at the top will work.

MVP was Oskar Ociepa who scored an incredible 43 points and amassed 63.0 MVP points.

Ben Woods claimed 9 rebounds and 28.5 MVP points, Mark Allum got 22.5 and Dino earned 20.5 MVP points.

Q1:20-22;   Q2: 16-19;   Q3: 23-24;   Q4:26-18.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (2), M Allum (10), N Mandafounis (2), P Coulthard (2), B LeTourneau (6), O Ociepa (43), A Farmer, B Woods (14), D Rakitzis (6).

Hunters win away keeping promotion hope alive!

Woodley Harriers - Blackhawk Hunters  64 - 57   (22-Apr-07)

It's difficult to believe that a team can win a game when they lose three out of the four quarters but this is exactly what happened at the Loddon Valley Centre where the Blackhawks earned an important victory an put them in line for promotion to Division 1.

The Hunters came out of the blocks with pace, purpose and determination and took the Harriers by storm. Lansdell and LeTourneau scored 9 and 7 points respectively, while Mandafounis, Allum and Ociepa played their part well.

Then it all went into go-slow and the Hunters allowed Woodley to get back into the game, losing the 2nd quarter 14-15 but still looked good at half-time (36-25).

More of the same in the 3rd and as Woodley kept chipping away, the Hunters found their lead had been reduced to 2 points (57-55) with 1 min 38 seconds left on the clock. That was when Ben LeTourneau decided it was time to improve his scoring tally and went on to score 5 points while Oskar Ociepa added another 2 of his own to secure an important win for the Blackhawks.

It's a big game this Tuesday away to Farnborough where depending on the result, the Hunters may end up in any of the top four League places.

MVP was Oskar Ociepa who pulled down an incredible 17 rebound, scored 17 points and amassed 40.2 MVP points.

Nick Mandafounis had a good game (crashed the boards 12 times and netted 21.3 MVP points). Ben LeTourneau also impressed by scoring 15 points and collecting 20.0 MVP points in the process.

Q1:22-10;   Q2: 14-15;   Q3: 15-16;   Q4: 13-16.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (9), M Allum (10), N Mandafounis (7), P Coulthard (4), B LeTourneau (15), O Ociepa (17), A Farmer (2).

Hunters stun Vipers and have promotion in their sights

Farnham Vipers - Blackhawk Hunters  56 - 95   (31-Mar-07)

The high-octane Hunters were back at Lightwater and stunned the Vipers to put real  pressure at the top half of the League table.

If the 1st period was not convincing enough (28-12), the second was simply sensational (30-6). Inspired by Ben LeTourneau's astonishing 3-point shooting, the Hunters stole the ball time and time again and scored at will.

With an impressive 58-18 half-time score, the Hunters stepped off the gas in the second half but there was little the Vipers could do to save the game. Woking ran out comfortable winners having smashed two Club records in the process:

Ben LeTourneau now holds the Club record for scoring the most 3-pointers in a game (6).

Oskar Ociepa now holds the Club record for the most steals in a game (11).

The Hunters (2006/7) now hold the Club record for the most steals in a game (38).

MVP was the unstoppable Chris Paice with 7 steals, 20 points and 42.0 MVP points.

Oskar Ociepa got 11 steals, 12 points and 27.2 MVP points.

Ben LeTourneau impressed scoring 22 points and collecting 25.5 MVP points.

Good performance also by Dino Rakitzis who despite lack of court time this season, scored 8 points and collected 20.0 MVP points.

Q1:28-12;   Q2: 30-6;   Q3: 19-11;   Q4: 18-27.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (6), C Paice (20), M Allum (7), N Mandafounis (4), P Coulthard (2), B LeTourneau (22), O Ociepa (12), D Rakitzis (8), E Okorocha (6).

Hunters could not impose their game and nearly paid the price

Blackhawk Hunters - Woodley Harriers  58 - 57   (27-Mar-07)

Having led for 99% of the game, the Hunters very nearly threw the game away in the last minute but thanks to a Chris Paice basket seconds from the end, the hopes for promotion to Division 1 were kept alive.

MVP was Chris Paice with 5 steals, 19 points and 38.0 MVP points.

Rick Lansdell put in a captain's performance with 23.0 MVP points. Good performances also by Phil Coulthard (10 points and 22.5 MVP points) and Ben Woods (20.3 MVP points).

Q1: 16-15;   Q2: 16-13;   Q3: 15-14;   Q4: 11-15.

Hunters could not impose their game and paid the price

Reading Rockets - Blackhawk Hunters  56 - 46   (12-Mar-07)

A string of key misses under the basket and some sloppy defending became the undoing of the Hunters this evening as they failed to impose their game on much-improved Rockets.

MVP was Oskar Ociepa with 21 points and 27.2 MVP points.

Ociepa and Mandafounis between them mopped up 24 of the 38 rebounds.

Q1: 16-18;   Q2: 10-14;   Q3: 16-12;   Q4: 4-12.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (4), C Paice (6), M Allum (4), N Mandafounis (6), O Ociepa (21), P Coulthard, D Rakitzis, B LeTourneau (3), A Farmer (2).

Hunters turn on the style to earn important away win!

Blackhawk Hunters - Andover Brakers  85 - 50   (6-Mar-07)

It was high-octane energy from tip-off to final whistle. It was another stunning performance by the guards and another great result for the Hunters who now move up to joint third position in the League table.

"This is our third win in a row and it's not a coincidence" said coach Costas Rakitzis after the game. "We probably have some of the best guards in the League and our fitness levels are second to none. The lads should be very happy with their performances of late but we have five games to play and this Division is still wide open".

Once again, the Hunters ran their offensive plays well, put in a solid defensive performance but it was their transition game that was so purposeful and their teamwork so breathtakingly effective.

50 rebounds, 18 assists and 18 steals makes good statistics by anyone's standard.

MVP was the irrepressible Oskar Ociepa with 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 20 points and 54.5 MVP points.

Mark Allum had an excellent game (4 assists, 6 steals, 17 points and 44.0 MVP points) and so did Chris Paice with 82% field goal accuracy, 21 points and 40.0 MVP points.

Ben Woods dominated under the baskets, pulling down 14 rebounds.

Q1: 15-8;   Q2: 27-12;   Q3: 25-19;   Q4: 18-11.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (4), C Paice (21), M Allum (17), N Mandafounis (10), O Ociepa (20), B Woods (6), P Coulthard (7), D Rakitzis

Hunters turn on the style to earn important away win!

Camberley Old Pros - Blackhawk Hunters  25 - 93   (25-Feb-07)

No one would have expected this result. But having lost the first game at home 65-68, coach Costas Rakitzis knew what team he needed to pick to beat the hugely experienced gentlemen from Camberley. A fit one!

It worked. Paice, Allum, Coulthard and LeTourneau, hustled and tormented the Camberley guards who got very few chances to shoot at the basket while the 'bigs' kept the Old Pros main weapon Oakley very quiet.

The Hunters ran their offensive plays well, but what was at the root of everything they did today was their awesome defence.

MVP was the irrepressible Oskar Ociepa with 17 rebounds, 7 steals, 20 points and 54.0 MVP points.

Mark Allum put in a very good performance (4 steals, 18 points and 36.0 MVP points). Coulthard, LeTourneau, Farmer and Paice also impressed.

Q1: 25-6;   Q2: 21-4;   Q3: 24-10;   Q4: 23-5.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (1), C Paice (8), A Farmer (2), M Allum (18), N Mandafounis (6), O Ociepa (20), B Woods (6), B LeTourneau (19), P Coulthard (15).

Never in danger but made hard work of it

Blackhawk Hunters - Camberley Blue Jays  54- 40   (09-Jan-07)

The result was never in doubt but the Hunters didn't always look comfortable going forward. "We made hard work of it but the good news is that our individual and team defence worked very well tonight. We played disciplined basketball and my players should be happy with the effort they put into a game we knew we had to win." said coach Costas Rakitzis.

The best quarter was the first during which the defence allowed their opponents only two free-throws while Allum, Woods and Mandafounis hit their targets to give Hunters a healthy 11-2 lead.

The second period was marred by Ben Woods's injury but there were plenty of good men on the bench to step in and finish the first half strongly (26-13).

The Camberley players showed their sportsmanship by providing all the help they could to the injured Woods. For that, we thank them.

As the offence was getting better, the defence was caught out in the 3rd quarter but Mandafounis, Dunderdale and the tireless Paice did enough to extend the Blackhawks lead to 45-27.

Some of the intensity was lost in the 4th period but despite a frustrating evening for the 'bigs', the Hunters claimed an important home win which will post them firmly in the middle of the league table.

Q1: 11-2;   Q2: 15-11;   Q3: 19-14;   Q4: 9-13.

There were no weak links in this team but Nick Mandafounis emerged as the most valuable player with 10 points and 24.0 MVP points.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (2), C Paice (4), A Farmer, M Allum (8), N Mandafounis (10), J Dunderdale (13), B Woods (6), A Collier (7), K Jarvis (2), E Okorocha (2).

Too many mistakes cost Hunters a one-point thriller

Blackhawk Hunters - Farnham Vipers  67- 68   (12-Dec-06)

It was touch and go all the way in this thriller of a game but the Vipers managed to claw a one-point victory six seconds from the end.

It was a great effort by most of the squad who gave it their all in a game of attrition. The Vipers found it difficult to cope with the Hunters' pace (and Paice!) and the Hunters found it difficult to get the rebounds and defend their baseline.

Q1: 19-17;   Q2: 18-19;   Q3: 11-21;   Q4: 19-11.

Performance highlights include 14 rebounds by Rick Lansdell, 6 steals a-piece for Chris Paice and Mark Allum, 15 points scored by Chris Paice, 20 MVP points by Mark Allum and 27 MVP points by Chris Paice.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (6), M Westwood, C Paice (15), I Miles (6), P Coulthard (2), B LeTourneau (11), A Farmer (4), M Allum (10), N Mandafounis (5), J Dunderdale (8).

Score line far too flattering for the Phantoms

Farnborough Phantoms - Blackhawk Hunters   81- 51   (6-Dec-06)

The Hunters just couldn't get the measure of those unforgiving backboards and rings at Fern Hill and sunk to heavy defeat.

It will all be different when we play the return at home!

Q1: 11-29;   Q2: 14-13;   Q3: 8-11;   Q4: 18-28.

Best performance from Ben Woods (12 rebounds, 16 points and 22.3 MVP points).

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (12), M Westwood (5), C Paice (12), B Woods (16), P Coulthard (4), C Tsingas, A Farmer (2).

Hunters dodge the Rockets to land their prey...

Blackhawk Hunters - Reading Rockets   52 - 48   (21-Nov-06)

The Hunters just won't do it the easy way. They had to go down by 13 points before they were stung into action and got going to claim a narrow victory against the well-organised men from Reading.

It all started badly when two successive defensive errors gave the Rockets a 4-0 lead. The Blackhawks found some rhythm and got back to close the 1st period 12-12.

Poor defence in the 2nd period, combined with poor offence can only mean one thing: disaster. The rot continued for the first two minutes in the 3rd and the Hunters found themselves 13 points down. That is when the offensive tactics changed and the new formation started bearing fruit. Not only that, the defence tightened and allowed only four baskets in the whole quarter. The Hunters were now dodging the Rockets and were beginning to hit their target.

The good work continued in the fourth, the concentration was maintained and the Blackhawks came out winners despite missing a lot from the foul line.

35 rebounds and 43% field goal accuracy was the good news but 13% 3-point hit rate needs some improvement.

Q1: 12-12;   Q2: 9-18;   Q3: 16-8;   Q4: 15-10.

Good performances from captain Rick Lansdell (8 points and 29.5 MVP points), Phil Coulthard (8 points and 24.5 MVP), Emeka Okorocha (13 points, 12 rebounds and 23.3 MVP and Ben Woods (21.0 MVP).

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (8), M Westwood, C Paice, B Woods (5), B Le Tourneau (13), P Coulthard (8), C Tsingas, C Okorocha (13), M Allum (5).

Blame it on the weather, the M3, voodoo...

Andover Brakers - Blackhawk Hunters   60 - 45   (17-Nov-06)

The Blackhawks just didn't turn up for the game today.

25 rebounds, 30% field goal accuracy, 20% 3-point accuracy and 25% hit rate from the foul line just isn't what one might call winning form. We will do MUCH better on Tuesday!

Q1: 9-11;   Q2: 10-6;   Q3: 16-22;   Q4: 10-21.

Best performance was from Keith Jarvis (7 points and 17.7 MVP points).

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (6), M Westwood (6), C Paice (7), B Woods (4), B Le Tourneau (2), P Coulthard (3), A Farmer (10).

Fancy 'exciting'? You've come to the right place!

Blackhawk Hunters - Windsor Warriors  75 - 63   (7-Nov-06)

The Blackhawks just don't do 'dull' at Tomlinscote! With coach Rakitzis on duty at the Flyers' away game, Rick Lansdell assumed the role of player/coach to lead the Hunters to an important home win against one of the most fancied sides in Division 2.

As the Warriors struggled to find their rhythm in the 1st period, the Blackhawks wasted no time from the tip-off and thanks to free-scoring Ben Woods, Ben LeTourneau and Mark Allum, they found themselves leading at the end of the 1st by 5 points.

After the break, the Warriors found their rhythm. They scored more consistently and took advantage of a spate of turnovers by the Hunters. Despite some great offensive play by Woods and superb rebounding by Andy Farmer, the Warriors won the 2nd and 3rd periods mainly due to some sharp 3-point shooting.

The Blackhawks got on the floor for the 4th period trailing 48-51. But that is where it all changed. The Hunters morphed their defence into a box-and-one formation which effectively took care of the Warriors' sharp shooter. With their best offensive weapon neutralised, the Warriors fell prey to the spectacular speed and quickness of Chris Paice and the scoring prowess of Ben Woods, who harassed them with steal after steal and converted with basket after basket. The 'big men' complemented Paice's efforts with defensive blocks and solid rebounding at both ends which resulted in seven unanswered baskets (a 14-point run!) and an unshakable 11-point lead. All that was left to do was to close out the game, which was done masterfully by LeTourneau, Allum and Coulthard.

Captain and coach Rick Lansdell beamed after the game: "This win is attributed to a full team effort. Everyone played their part and as a result we beat one of the best teams in our league".

42 rebounds and 16 turnovers is a vast improvement from the last game and today's result is a testament to this.

Q1: 14-9;   Q2: 12-14;   Q3: 22-28;   Q4: 26-12.

Best performances came from Ben Woods (9 rebounds, 17 points and 39 MVP points), Chris Paice (4 steals, 13 points and 29 MVP points), Phil Coulthard (10 points and 23.5 MVP points), Rick Lansdell (6 points and 20.8 MVP points) and Ben LeTourneau (12 points and 26 MVP points).

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (6), M Westwood (9), C Paice (13), B Woods (17), M Allum (4), B Le Tourneau (12), D Gilbert (2), P Coulthard (10), N Mandafounis, A Farmer (2).

A lesson on how to lose a game in the last period

Blackhawk Hunters  - Camberley Old Pros  65 - 68   (17-Oct-06)

Despite the effort and having led for a good 90% of the time, inexperience was the deciding factor in this game in which the Blackhawks managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

31 rebounds were too few and 22 turnovers were simply too many.

Q1: 20-10;   Q2: 15-16;   Q3: 16-18;   Q4: 14-24.

Best performances came from Chris Paice (4 steals, 12 points and 28.5 MVP points) and Andre Collier (11 rebounds and 26 MVP points).

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (2), M Westwood (2), C Paice (12), A Collier (6), B Woods (2), M Allum (8), B Le Tourneau (15), D Gilbert (4), D Rakitzis (4) P Coulthard (10).

Odiham prove too strong for the Blackhawks

Blackhawk Hunters  - Odiham  49-68   (03-Oct-06)

It was a game full of ups and downs for the Blackhawks but then again we all knew it was going to be tough.

The Blackhawks led by the experienced Le Tourneau ran their plays well but the shots didn't fall for them.

The defence had its moments too. The full-court press worked well when the concentration and fitness were at the highest but there was no consistency. When the forwards got their positioning right it was just too late.

The number of turnovers (37) is simply unacceptable, 34% field goal percentage is too low but 74 bonus points shows that the players put in the effort and held their own against a very good side.

Best performance came from Ben Le Tourneau (20 points, 4-out-of-4 free throws and 30 MVP points). Matt Westwood showed he is returning to form by claiming 10 rebounds and 25.5 MVP points.

The referees Tim Brown and Paul Clarke were very good.

Q1: 9-17;   Q2: 15-18;   Q3: 12-21;   Q4: 13-12.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (8), M Westwood (7), C Paice (2), A Collier, B Woods (8), M Allum (2), B Le Tourneau (20), A Farmer, D Gilbert, K Jarvis (2), P Coulthard.

Blue Jays fall prey to the mighty Blackhawks

Camberley Blue Jays - Blackhawk Hunters   58-70   (24-Sep-06)

It took a while for the Blackhawks to find their flying pattern but once they did, there was no stopping them.

The experienced Blue Jays (who were playing in the 1st division last season) seemed to shake their nerves quicker and led the first quarter 15-11.

The second quarter was a different story. Right from the start, the mighty hawks tightened up their defence and scored 12 points without reply. At half time, the score was 33-28 and Woking never looked back.

In the 3rd quarter, Camberley staged a mini comeback but a timely time-out put the Blackhawks back on course. Woods, Farmer and Lansdell were sensational under the baskets mopping up just about every defensive rebound going making for a very pleasing score line (48-37) at the end of the 3rd.

In the 4th, Le Tourneau turned on the style with two successive 3-pointers and the hawks were now cruising. The Blue Jays tried to catch up towards the end but it was too little too late. The Blackhawks had landed their first prey of the new season.

Best performance came from Rick Lansdell (14 points, 11 rebounds and a total of 41 MVP points).

The referees were good but at times they got as confused by the many lines on the court as some of our players.

Q1: 11-15;   Q2: 22-13;   Q3: 15-9;   Q4: 20-21.

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (14), M Westwood (14), C Paice (4), A Collier (5), B Woods (8), M Allum (6), B Le Tourneau (12), A Farmer (7).

--------------- 2005/6 Season ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where height and experience counts
Camberley Old Pros - Blackhawks A'  77-48    (12 Mar 06)

With only four of the regulars available for this game, it was no surprise that Woking lost.

Despite the height and experience disadvantage, the Blackhawks held their own in the first half which finished 28-34.

The wheels came off in the second half, though, as the Old Pros defended well and the hawks could not find their range.

Best performances came from Rick Lansdell and Francis Long who share the MVP honours with 25 MVP points each.

Q1: 11-14;   Q2: 17-20;   Q3: 11-26;   Q4: 9-17

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (9), F Long (14), Babs (11), T Bowen, T Stephen (2), R Mwnjilo (4), C Paice (8), N Leggett.

So much you can do against nine 3-pointers...
Odiham - Blackhawks A'  77-67    (07 Mar 06)

It was an uphill struggle all the way for the brave Blackhawks as they kept coming back to counter what was an insane shooting display by Odiham. It was only in the fourth quarter when Odiham lost Evans with 5 fouls that Woking had the opportunity to show what they can do. But following a disastrous 3rd quarter, it was too little, too late.

With only three forwards (of whom only Jarvis was fully fit) options up front were limited. However, they all put in spirited performances and did themselves proud.

The guards worked tirelessly and there were times when there was good interplay and matched the Odiham guards in just about every department apart from shooting.

The best performance came from Keith Jarvis who posted a 70% field goal percentage, pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 16 points. Dino Rakitzis and Francis Long claimed a respectable 7 rebounds each and dished out 7 of the 10 assists in the game.

Although the referees had a reasonable game overall, they were far too tolerant with Odiham's frequent protestations and missed some obvious fouls.

Q1: 11-16;   Q2: 19-19;   Q3: 18-27;   Q4: 19-15

Blackhawks: R Lansdell (9), F Long (11), Babs (2), K Jarvis (16), J Pleass (5), M Westwood (11), T Stephen (3), M Allum, D Rakitzis (10).

A typical game of two halves...
Blackhawks A' - Blizzards  53-72    (28 Feb 06)

It was the better team that won in the end as the high-octane start by the Blackhawks could not be sustained in the second half.

Babs, Pleass, Long, Westwood and Jarvis took the Blizzards by storm scoring 11 points in the first 5 minutes. The blitz continued through the second half and Woking finished ahead 33-26. It was great to see the teamwork and crisp finishing but it took a lot of effort and the hawks began to tire.

The third quarter was a struggle as the Blizzards picked up their game and there was little our forwards could do against the much taller and effective Hassey and Cole.
