About Us...
We are a Basketball Club based in Woking, Surrey, England. We practice in the main Sports Hall at the Winston Churchill Sports Centre, Winston Churchill School on the A324 (Hermitage Road, Woking, GU21 8TL. Tel. 01483 797 015) (click here for map or look under the Find Us option for more detailed directions). We also practice at Woking High school in Horsell and Tomlinscote Sports Centre in Frimley.
The Blackhawks have been very successful in the last few years. Although the original Blackhawks were founded some 20 years ago, it all started again in 1999 (thanks to Joe Lynch, Bob and Sharon McGregor) with 16 u12 registered boys who went on to win the u16 Surrey Central Venue League and Cup in 2003/4 and play in the National League (Southern Conference) in 2004/5 under the guidance of coach Costas Rakitzis. Coach Phil Parry guided the u16 Girls squad to the top spot in the 2005 Surrey Youth Games.
During the 2005/6 season the Club had more than 100 registered players in 3 junior boys, one junior girls and 2 senior men squads. At the end of that season, the Club acquired the Aldershot Flyers, a 1st Division squad.
This season (2006/7) we are fielding 9 squads in total (3 boys, 3 men, 2 girls and our first ladies squad ever!).
The secret of our success?
To help encourage and develop this ethos, we ask each Parent or Guardian to provide their son or daughter with the Club’s ‘Shooting Shirt’. These are personalised with the player’s surname and can be worn to practice or during the warm-up before matches, providing a strong sense of team spirit and Club identity as well as identifying the player’s pride in being a Blackhawk!
All coaches and administrative personnel at the Club are volunteers, their only ambition being to provide a safe and challenging sporting environment in which everyone can become the best they can be. Needless to say that the support of the parents, be it in the form of transporting their sons and daughters to and from practice sessions and games or helping with Referee, Table Official or Statistician duties, is greatly appreciated by ALL.
