Blackhawks Girls beat old rivals Guildford Heat

Blackhawks u16s Girls vs Guildford Heat 31 - 14

(Friday 9th November 2007)

The first game of the season for the Blackhawk girls entailed solid offensive and defensive performances from every member of the team. After a nervous start the girls got into their stride and completely shut out any shooting opportunities that the Guildford girls had. Brilliant offensive rebounding from Hargreaves led to the first basket of the game which gave the girls the confidence that they needed. Great defence from Wright led to a fast break which Anagnostopoulus scored with ease. At the end of the first quarter Blackhawks were 6 points up with no reply from Guildford.

In the second quarter Guildford stepped up their defence however this was no problem for the Blackhawks who drove to the basket for some easy lay ups. Guildford brought on their danger player which was a real test for the girls but Lifton and Jarvis prevented her from making any easy baskets through tight defence and brilliant help defence from Jones.

In the third quarter the girls offence structure widened which ripped the defence apart leading to Anagnostouplos taking on her player one on one and driving to the basket and scoring every time. In the fourth quarter the girls intensified the defence blocking out any penetration into the key with Hargreaves and Jones clearing up the boards. A very positive start for the U16 girls’ basketball season.

A great winning start for coach Taylor.

Woking Blackhawks destroy Guildford Heat

Blackhawks u17s Girls vs Guildford Heat u18s  60 – 11

With their BBL championship winning team flying high, the Heat u18s girls’ team came along to the Surrey Girls Tournament with high hopes.

These were soon dashed by a brilliant display from the dominant Blackhawks u17s Girls.  As with the earlier Sutton game the Blackhawks girls scored 20 points before the Heat managed a point.  With fantastic interaction at the point between Hardiman and Miah the well drilled Woking team gave Guildford a lesson in playing basketball.  With great contributions from Wright, Marshall and Dillnutt the Blackhawks kept the pressure on ending the half 37-5 up.

The second half was more of the same with great defending from Taylor ensuring Guildford struggled for every point.  The final score ended 60 – 11 to the Blackhawks.

Exceptional performances from Blackhawks centre Becky Mole, completely dominating the Heat’s 6’ 2” centre; Anabelle Hardiman scoring 25 points and shooting 70% from the field; and Asrina Miah for unbelievable penetration of the key and scoring.

MVP and top scorer: Anabelle Hardiman 40.0 (25 points, 5 steals, 5 rebounds)

Team: Marshall, Wright (4), Hardiman (25), Miah (14), Mole (15), Taylor (2), Dillnutt

Blackhawks Girls dominate against inexperienced Sutton...

Blackhawks vs Sutton 87 – 18

It was a tough outing for the newly formed Sutton Girls squad coming up against a formidable Blackhawks team used to playing senior level in the Wessex league.

The Blackhawks started the game well putting 20 points on the board before Sutton had a chance to reply.  Even though Woking were playing a much weaker side they still showed respect and kept the defence strong throughout ending up with a massive 32 steals for the game.  With excellent scoring throughout the whole squad the half ended 37-10 to the Blackhawks.

In the second half the girls’ fitness became very apparent as they ran in fast break after fast break.  In fairness to Sutton they kept going to the end and did not give up showing good character.  However, the Blackhawks scoring was fantastic with the team shooting 59% from the field.  In the end the Blackhawks ran in clear winners 87-18.

MVP and top scorer: Becky Mole 37.0 (23 points, 7 steals)

Team: Marshall (6), Wright (8), Hardiman (18), Miah (16), Mole (23), Taylor (12), Dillnutt (4)

Girls wake up too late..
Blackhawks u16s Girls vs Reading A 27 – 29
BCVL
  (25/03/07)

This was a very frustrating game for Coach Parry; the girls spent 3 quarters unable to work out the Reading boys’ defence.   A number of good opportunities could not be converted and the first half ended 4-12 to Reading.

In the third period the girls started to compete and tighten up the defence.  The quarter ended 10-19 to Reading.  Then in the 4th quarter the Blackhawks seemed to wake up and started to play fabulous basketball.  The Reading A squad had no answer to the girls.  They were passing and moving; moving into space; they simply ripped the boys defence apart.  As time ticked down the Blackhawks had pulled back to 25-27 with about a minute to go.  Unfortunately Reading managed to get a basket to ease the pressure.  The girls scored back but the game ended 27 – 29 to Reading.

MVP and Top Scorer: Anabelle Hardiman 36.5 (19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals)

Team: Hardiman (19), Marshall, Anagnostopoulos, Cooke, Fisher, Mole (6), Lifton, Taylor (2), Kapper-Gill, Hargreaves

Girls snatch game in Overtime
Blackhawks U16 girls v Feltham  38-36
BCVL
  (03/10/06)

U16s Blackhawks girls played well against strong defensive pressure on the ball at half court by Feltham Boys. Determination in our own defence from the whole team with a good round of steals, blocks and rebounds, in particular by Katie, Mitch and Becky, provided good opportunity for counter attacking fast breaks.

Woking did however make it hard for themselves, let down by the poor receiving of passes in transition from defence to offence which led to at least eight of the total of 26 turnovers. The first quarter was tight ending 6-6.

The second quarter was a disaster with the Blackhawks struggling to score or even keep hold of the ball.  The halftime scored ended 10-24 to Feltham.

Fortunately for Blackhawks the Boys only had 8 players giving the girls an extra 8 points (4 points per missing player); this made the halftime score 18-24.  Making up for the poor first half with good movement and rebounding in offence Blackhawks gave themselves many opportunities for open shots, and also did well at the free throw line once Feltham was pressured into foul trouble.  Blackhawks also tightened the defence with 2 or 3 players blocking the Feltham drives to the basket.  This worked well with Feltham being limited to only 4 points in the quarter; the girls scored 10.

The final quarter was fast and furious with both side getting into foul trouble.  However the Blackhawks were more successful from the line.  Mitch closed out the game with a basket in the dying seconds to take the game into OT, score 36-36.

The first minute of OT was played with the same intensity as the last quarter but again with both teams in foul trouble free throws were going to be crucial.  With 20 seconds to go Christina was fouled and went to the line.  She calmly stepped up and sank both free throws to put the girls in the lead by 2 points.  The girls then stole the ball back and ran the clock out (just).

Two special mentions:

Isobelle: who volunteered to play which saved the team 4 points (therefore technically won the game!).

Mitch: for the most stunning block shot seen by most people, ever.  In the dying seconds of the third quarter Feltham made a break with their tall No.11 (14 points) going straight for the basket.  Most mere mortals would have either fouled him or been beaten to the basket.  Mitch tracked him all the way and as he went up for the lay-up, releasing the ball, she knocked the ball clean out of the court; the crowd went wild.

MVP: Becky Mole with 20 points (8 points, 10 rebounds)

Top scores: Christina Anagnostopoulos and Becky Mole 8 points.

Disappointment!
Blackhawks U16 girls v Windsor  29-38
  (22/09/06)

Rather disappointingly, the girls were 2 players short of the required minimum number of players for this game and the resulting 8 penalty points awarded to Windsor was just about the difference between the two sides.

2005/6 season

------------------------------------------------------------

This wasn't Basketball, it was war!

Blackhawks v London Towers  30-43  (19/3/06)

SGL Cup semi-final

A semi-final cup game that should have been the final.  The two best teams in the Surrey league and cup met in this clash of the titans and it wasn’t for the faint hearted.

For a second time this season the Blackhawks girls started off strongly against a well-drilled Towers squad.  After the first quarter Blackhawks were up 11-8.  Unfortunately, the girls were also making life difficult by missing fairly easy open lay-ups from fast break situations.

In the second quarter the Towers started to get physical and quite literally started to muscle their way ahead with some questionable off the ball tactics, especially with use of the elbow.  Unfortunately, a number of the Blackhawk girls started to get into foul trouble which forced coach Parry to make changes to the line up.  The half ended 15-22 to the Towers.

Even though the Towers started to pull away the girls never gave up fighting and kept the pressure on throughout the next two quarters.  Given the physical nature of the game both teams were going to the free throw line.  Unfortunately Towers were putting theirs away, shooting over 80% from the line, while the Blackhawks ended with only 4 from 13

(31%).  The third quarter ended 21-33 and the final score 30-43.

This was undoubtedly a game the girls could have won.  Unfortunately too many free throws and open lay-ups were missed.  On a very big plus side this was an awesome performance by the whole squad to keep fighting to the end.  If only we could have put a few of the open baskets away, if only …..

Special mention must go to Becky Mole who had her best game of the season playing in the post – 3 from 5 baskets, 7 rebounds, 1 steal, 4 blocks, 20.5 MVP points)

MVP: Mitch Talyor 27.5 (8 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 5 blocks)

Team: Hardiman (6), Wright (3), Agnostopoulos (1), Taylor (8), Marshall (4), Francis, Tenger, Lifton (2), Day, Mole (6)

Kingston have seen enough!!

Blackhawks v Kingston 20-0  (19/3/06)

SGL

After seeing the Blackhawks performance against the Towers in the Cup game, the Wildcats took the view that conceding the game would be preferable to facing the Blackhawks!

The Blackhawks are given the game with the score of 20-0.

Girls get off to a great start in the Surrey cup

Blackhawks v Guildford  52-7  (26/02/06)

This was a different Guildford team than the one faced in the Surrey League, with some solid additions in the point and guard positions.  Coached by Chad McKnight of the Guildford Heat BBL team they came out strong against the Blackhawks.

On their first play Guildford set a low post screen which the girls failed to react to leaving a player open; fortunately Guildford failed to capitalise on the situation.   The Blackhawks then formed up the wide offence which allowed Hardiman to take on her opposite number one-on-one leading to the easy lay-up.  The next few minutes both defences exerted themselves on each other forcing a number of turnovers with no team scoring.  However, the Blackhawks kept their offensive structure and slowly turned the screw on Guildford.

With Hardiman penetrating the paint this forced the Guildford post defenders to move to cover.  This lead to easy baskets for Taylor and Day in the low post.  This further stretched the Guildford defence allowing Wright to drive the basket.  Throughout all this offensive pressure the Blackhawks defence remained strong ending the first quarter 15-0.

The second quarter continued with the same defensive strength by the Blackhawks with great performances from Turner and Tenger in the guard positions. With both Blackhawks point guards (Hardiman and Francis) penetrating the paint and feeding Taylor,  baskets were there for the taking.  Unfortunately Blackhawks missed a few easy lay-ups, but with the boards being cleaned up by Marshall and Taylor even these missed chances were quickly turned into points; the half ended 27-3.

In the third quarter the girls started to turn on the style with some fantastic baskets ending the quarter 44-5 up and finishing the final quarter with a great score from Taylor in the last seconds of the game.

This was without doubt a fantastic performance from the whole of the Blackhawks squad against a strong Guildford team.  This victory was built on tough defence and great ball and player movement in offence.  Without doubt the best performance yet from the girls.

Special mention goes to Mitch Taylor for the first triple-double of the season: 18 points, 13 rebounds, 10 steals.

MVP: Mitch Talyor 60.5 points (18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 10 steals, 4 blocks)

Blackhawks: Hardiman (11), Wright (8), Francis (4), Taylor (18),Day (4), Agnostopoulos (1), Turner, Tenger, Marshall (6)

111 without reply! - Two incredible wins...

game one:

Blackhawks vs Lanfranc  37-0  (12/02/06)

You might think that Lanfranc were a bad side given the score.  This is not the case: they are a tough side with good players.  Unfortunately for them they met a Blackhawks girl’s team giving a demonstration on how to play basketball.  The girl’s defence started tough and never let up throughout the whole game.  With Katie and Alana standing wide drawing their defenders this allowed Anabelle to penetrate the key feeding Mitch and Vicki for easy baskets. The first quarter ended 11-0 to the Blackhawks.

The second half carried on where the first left off with great defensive performances from Laura, Jasmine and Kiara.  The motion offence was really starting to pay with great passing, moving and screening from the team.  The half ended 19-0.

With the third quarter ending 27-0 the whole team was desperate to keep a clean sheet.  In the final quarter the girl’s never let up the defensive pressure ensuring Lan Franc had no opportunity to score while adding further baskets from Mitch, Vicki and Anabelle.  This was without doubt an awesome performance by the whole girl’s team.  While it is difficult to single out any players in such a great team performance a special mention must go to Jasmine who played fantastic defence coming out with 5 steals and 2 blocks.  Also a mention must go to Mitch with a double double (12 points, 11 rebounds).

MVP: Mitch Taylor 43.5 (12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, 3 blocks)

All players made a minimum of Bronze MVP award:

Marshall            (22.0)

Wright               (22.3)

Hardiman          (35.0)

Francis             (20.5)

Tenger              (20.5)

Taylor               (43.5)

Day                  (21.3)

Stapleton          (21.2)

Team: Hardiman (16), Wright, Francis, Taylor (12), Marshall (9), Tenger, Day, Stapleton.

game two

Blackhawks vs Epsom 74 - 0  (12/02/06)

With Epsom fielding a newly formed team it was always going to be one way traffic from the Blackhawks.  However, coach Parry was unhappy with his team’s lack of focus and attitude and so called an early timeout in order to address the situation.  The girls came back on court with the correct attitude and started to score at will.  With the intense level of defence played by the Blackhawks this forced many errors by Epsom which allowed easy turnovers leading to fast breaks.  The first quarter ended 18-0 and the second quarter 39-0.

After that the Blackhawks were in cruise control with the quarter finishing 60-0 and the game finishing 74-0.  It was difficult to judge the performance of the team given the quality of the opposition.  However, it was good to see that the girl’s are developing the correct attitude to close this type of game out.  With 111 points scored in the two games and none conceded the girls can be very proud of their performances.

MVP: Anabelle Hardiman 64.0 (40 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals)

Team: Hardiman (40), Wright (8), Francis (4), Taylor (16), Marshall, Tenger, Day (4), Stapleton (2).

Finally everything clicks into place

Blackhawks vs Hart  42-5  (20/1/06)

For most of the game it looked like the Blackhawks defence was going to keep a clean sheet.  The defensive intensity was excellent (even to the point where Anabelle was trying to kill some of the smaller members of the Hart team :-)).  The first quarter started slow with the Blackhawks leading 4-0.  The second quarter ended with the girls up 16-0 with good scores from Katie, Christina and Anabelle.  The third quarter ended 26-0 with baskets from Katie, Becky, Anabelle and Mitch (Mitch finally figuring out how to do a drop step and lay-up in the low post!).  The final quarter ended with fantastic performances from Vicky (8 points) and Mitch (6 points).  Special mentions to Aimee for a great defensive performance.

Joint MVPs: Mitch Taylor and Anabelle Hardiman 32.5

Mitch:  8 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals, 5 blocks

Anabelle:12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Beaten by the full court press and one player

Blackhawks vs Feltham  24-34  (6/1/06)

This was undoubtedly a game we should have won.  Leading at the half 12-8 things were looking good for the Blackhawks but let it slip in the second half when Feltham pressed the defence.  This lead to easy turnovers and quick baskets for them.  The other problem was defence against the Feltham No7.  He accounted for 24 of the 34 points from Feltham, mainly from uncontested outside shooting (20 points scored in the second half).  With better defence against this player and how to play the full court press this would have been a victory.  Oh well, next time!

MVP: Vicky Marshall 13.0 (4 points, 2 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Great Heart against a good team

Blackhawks vs Spelthorne  58-22  (6/12/05)

The Blackhawks showed great fighting spirit in a tough game where they went down 2-14 in the first quarter to a very well drilled Spelthorne team.  The Spelthorne coach was making statements that he wanted to win by 50 clear points during the break – the girls were not having any of it.  In the second quarter the team fought back with 6 points from Anabelle and 2 from Jessica, the Atoms only just shading the quarter 8-13.  By now the league leading Atoms were panicking with the Blackhawks increasing defensive pressure while still getting good scores from Vicky, Laura, Charlotte and Anabelle, the girls only just lost the quarter 10-11.  Unfortunately fitness was telling for the girls and they couldn’t keep up the pressure ending the game 22-58 to the Atoms.  This was for the most parts of the game a great team performance by the whole squad.

MVP: Mitch Taylor 15.0 (4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 blocks)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Surrey League game one

Great start poor finish

Blackhawks vs Towers  10-28  (20/11/05)

The Blackhawks started with a bang scoring from the tip off.  Anabelle tipping the ball to Katie who ran past the stationary Towers players for the easy lay-up.  Mitch added another basket to make it 4-0 at the close of the quarter.  Good defensive pressure on both sides kept scoring to a minimum as the half close 8-6 to the Blackhawks.  Unfortunately the defence came apart in the 3rd quarter allowing the Towers easy baskets, while on offence the girls could not penetrate their defence.  The Towers closed out the quarter up 10-21.  The girls could not fight back and the final score was 10-28 to the Towers.

MVP: Mitch Taylor 19.2 (2 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 7 blocks)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Surrey League game two

Great defence - Excellent offence

Blackhawks vs Guildford 40-13  (20/11/05)

Anabelle, Katie and Becky got the team off to a great start with 4 points each in the first quarter with Mitch contributing 2.  Defensively the team also worked hard keeping Guildford down to 5 points for the quarter.  Further baskets from Anabelle and Gabi gave a 18-9 lead at the half.  The second half was dominated by excellent defence from the Blackhawks keeping Guildford down to just 4 point for the half.  On offence Mitch helped herself to 8 baskets, with 2 from Vicki and 1 from Becky.  A great team performance.

MVP: Mitch Taylor 42.0 (18 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 6 blocks).

Two strong defensive performances underpin good wins for the Blackhawks Girls in the Surrey League.

Blackhawks vs Croydon LanFranc  26-9 (16/10/05)

The first game in the Surrey u16 girls’ league for the Blackhawks started slowly.  Both defences were sagging back giving a lot of space to the guards but making penetration into the key difficult.  Following a timeout the Blackhawks girls pushed up the defence to the half court pressuring the ball carriers.  This lead to quick steals from Alana, Annabelle and Christina converted to easy baskets.  The first quarter ended 6-2 to Blackhawks.  The second quarter was executed with equal intensity by both sides finishing 4-2 to Blackhawks.  In the third quarter the Blackhawks started to pull away from Lan Franc (8-3) and in the final quarter closed the match out (8-2).  It was a great team performance with the foundation firmly set in strong defence from the half way down.  A special mention must go to Charlotte for her best game ever for the Blackhawks and Alana for great defensive work.  Also another great performance from Michelle with some phenomenal blocks which one referee commented on as being akin to Dekembe Mutumbo of the NBA (Houston Rockets – Defensive Player of the year 94-95, 96-97, 97-98).

Special Note: Turnovers for the whole team – 6.

MVP: Michelle Taylor (18.3 MVP points) 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 5 blocks, no turnovers.

Blackhawks Girls:

A Hardiman (10), K Wright (2), C Anagnostopoulos, M Taylor (8), R Mole (2), A Francis, J Turner, C Lifton (4), L Day, K Stapleton, M Nyguist, G Tsingas (DNP), J Tenger (DNP)

Blackhawks vs Kingston Wildcats 25-13 (16/10/05)

Another tough game but also another good defensive performance from the Blackhawks.  It was a close first quarter finishing 3-3 with the Blackhawks pulling away in the second quarter 6-2.  Excellent performances from Charlotte (how to stand tall to the offence), Gabi (2 good fouls stopping certain scoring chances), and Jas (strong pressure defence forcing the turnover).  In the third quarter the Blackhawks pulled clear of Kingston 12-4, leaving the fourth quarter to be settled 4-4.  Once again excellent defence from Michelle with 3 very dramatic blocks.  A special mention to Gabi for a great basket that was just inside the 3 point arc.

MVP: Michelle Taylor (16.5MVP points) 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks.

Blackhawks Girls:

A Hardiman (7), A Francis (6), J Tenger, M Taylor (6), G Tsingas (2), K Wright, C Anagnostopoulos (2), R Mole, J Turner, C Lifton (2), L Day, K Stapleton,M Nyguist (DNP)

1st Quarter Blows it for the Blackhawks

Blackhawks 20 – Kingston 33 (14/10/05)

With a first quarter score of 15-2 to Kingston the Blackhawks had a mountain to climb against a strong Kingston boys squad.  The girls were finding it difficult to get into any scoring position and were being turned over by a strong Kingston defense.  In the second quarter the girls fought back with good performances from Charlotte, Vicki, Laura, Jo and Alana. We finished the quarter 6-5 down.  In the third quarter the girls started to pressure Kingston especially with great defense from Michelle (7 rebounds, 4 blocks), finishing the quarter up 7-6.  The girls kept the defense up in the final quarter closing out 6-6.

A big thank-you to Jas and Kiara for turning up as subs.

MVP: Michelle Taylor (25.5 MVP points) 7points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 blocks, no turnovers.

Blackhawks Girls:

A Hardiman (8), K Wright, C Anagnostopoulos, M Taylor (7), G Tsingas, A Francis (2), J Turner, C Lifton (3), V Marshall, L Day, J Tenger (Sub), K Stapleton (Sub)

Blackhawks girls - Bracknell  10-23 (07/10/05)

The Blackhawks girls lacked offensive penetration against a well drilled Bracknell team.  The first two quarters were very tight defensively from both team limiting the scores to 3-3 in the first quarter and 4-2 to Bracknell in the second.  In the third quarter Bracknell started piling on the pressure with the girls unable to force any openings in the Bracknell defence.  Quick steals and easy lay-ups pushed Bracknell up 9-1 for the quarter.  In the final quarter Bracknell edge it 7-4.  The final score was 23-10 to Bracknell.

MVP: Michelle Taylor (18.8) 3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 7 blocks.

Blackhawks: V Marshall(3), K Wright, C Anagnostopoulos, C Lifton, Jo Turner, M Taylor(3), R Mole(2), L Day(2), Emma

Blackhawks girls - Blackhawks u14 boys  43-22 (23/9/05)

A solid defensive performance underpinned a first outing for the Blackhawks girls team. This was highlighted in the first quarter by a scoring shut-out on the boys team. With a good quarter from Vicki Marshall and a special mention to Laura Day for a great defensive job against the boys danger player. Scores from Jasmine Tenger, Alana Francis and Katie Wright ended the quarter 5-0 to the girls. The defence slipped a little in the second quarter but the girls were still able to end the quarter up 10 points, at 15-5. Scores from Anabelle Hardiman and Michelle Taylor, with a great assist from Rebecca Mole. By the third quarter the boys were starting to click as a team and were putting the girls under considerable pressure, forcing some easy turnovers and scoring some good baskets. In the forth quarter the girls scored 3 quick baskets in the first 2 minutes relieving the pressure and pushing the lead to double digits. With the win secured substitutions were made to give the whole squad match practice. With a solid performance from Charlotte Lifton and very encouraging debut from Christina Anagnostopoulos the team had their first win.

MVP was Anabelle (30.5 MVP points) with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks; with a close second from Michelle (24.5 MVP points), and third from Katie (13.0 MVP points).

Blackhawks: Alana Francis (1), Katie Wright (5), Jasmine Tenger (2), Vicki Marshall (2), Laura Day (2), Anabelle Hardiman (17), Christina Anagnostopoulos, Charlotte Lifton, Michelle Taylor (14), Rebecca Mole
