There was a party
atmosphere as fans entered the hall where the
Surrey Finals were being held. The last fixture
for the day was the Men's Plate final but the
Flyers were not in the mood for partying just
yet. There was a task at hand and they wanted to
make up for missing out on the Division 1 Title
a few days ago.
It was a nervous
start by the Blackhawks and an early time-out
had to be called to address a 3-10 deficit. But
as Damian Knode responded with a 3-pointer, so
did Kingston and so it went on for the rest of
the first period, which ended 17-21 in favour of
the opposition.
The second started
well for Woking and with baskets from Ociepa,
Roberts and Rogier, the Flyers found themselves
ahead 26-25 after 5 minutes of play. Kingston
were stung into action after their time-out and
despite two more baskets from Oskar Ociepa, the
half-time score read 30-34. This was not going
to be easy.
At the beginning of
the third, Francis Long hit 2 out of 2 from the
foul line and Knode followed that with a
3-pointer of his own before Kingston replied.
Ociepa was called to the foul line and sunk both
to give Flyers a temporary lead 37-36. But the
emotional roller-coaster was not about to stop.
Kingston hit two of their own from the line
before the Flyers introduced Mark Allum to the
game whose pace took the opposition by surprise
and allowed him and Ociepa to score 5 points
between them, taking the score to 42-38.
Could this be the
turning point for Woking? Not quite. Kingston
called a time-out, came back fighting and went
on a 6-point run before Woking called a time-out
of their own. Whatever was said then, it worked.
With 7ft1 Laurens Rogier and Steve Roberts
dominating the defensive boards, Dunderdale,
Allum and Ociepa went on the rampage in offence
and it was a very thankful Kingston when the
buzzer signalled the end of the period, the
score board displaying 49-44 in Woking's favour.
The fragile lead had
to be protected. Rogier and Ociepa did their
best to take the score to 53-44 and it looked
like clear water ahead but then disaster struck.
The Flyers went off the boil for some reason and
allowed Kingston to score two 3-pointers and six
more points to bring the score to 57-56. It was
time for another time-out and some straight
talking. The first thing Damian Knode did was to
sink a 3-pointer, then Steve Roberts sunk
another, followed by yet another from Knode to
complete a devastating hat-trick within the
space of 80 seconds. Ociepa continued the
onslaught ably assisted by Rogier and before
Kingston had a chance to regroup, the Blackhawks
were ahead 70-56 with a minute-and-a-half to go.
The Flyers left it late but their fitness and
mental strength showed during this critical
period of the game. It was too late for Kingston
to recover as Woking slowed the game down to run
out worthy winners and finish their season on a
high.
There were no
strugglers in that team but there were excellent
performances from Ociepa, Rogier and Damian
Knode who was voted MVP by the officials.

Woking’s
premier basketball team, the Blackhawk Flyers
ended their season on a high on Friday and
entertained the home supporters at the Leisure
Centre in a real cliff-hanger of a game.
A win for the
Blackhawks meant 2nd place in Division 1 and an
automatic promotion to National League
basketball. For the Phantoms it was simply a
fight for survival in the top Division.
The Flyers started
slowly and the first quarter was evenly matched
and ended with the Phantoms ahead at 20-21. It
was clear this was not going to be an easy night
for either team.
At the beginning of
quarter 2, the Flyers lived up to their name and
scored 7 points without reply including an
impressive 3-pointer from Ociepa. But the
momentum was lost after a Farnborough time-out
and Woking looked ragged at times as they faded
to end the half 7 points down.
This dip in form
continued in the third, by which time they were
12 points behind and on the ropes.
Thankfully, the
trend was reversed in the fourth when the
Blackhawks changed their defensive play and with
a truly storming performance they set the court
on fire and finally managed to find the basket
and their pride.
With the scores
level at 71-71 and with 0.6 seconds on the
clock, Okorocha was fouled and needed one of the
two free throws to secure the game.
Woking’s celebrations were premature
though as both shots missed the target.
It was Farnborough
who drew blood first in extra time and edged
ahead 71-74. Abubakar scored a crucial basket to
claw it back to 73-74 but the Phantoms were
determined to stay up. Imran Shafiq went to the
line and scored both his free throws and it
looked as if it was all over when he sunk a
3-pointer a minute later.
It was time to bring
out the heavy guns. Damian Knode took to the
floor and the Blackhawks were alive again.
Ociepa scored two baskets in quick succession to
claw the score back to 77-79. Another steal and
the Flyers were on the attack again. Damian
Knode was fouled but only managed to score one
of the two free throws. With the score at 78-79,
there were 8 seconds left on the clock when
Ociepa stole and found Knode with a pin-point
pass under the basket. As far as pressure goes,
it is difficult to think of a tougher place to
be but the experienced Knode dispatched the
killer 2-pointer and by the time the final
buzzer sounded the Blackhawks, their supporters
and their opponents were drained physically and
emotionally.
Excellent
performances from Ociepa, Grainger and Abubakar
ensured that the Blackhawks season did not end
with a whimper.
Second place in
Division 1 is a great achievement for the
Woking team, whose ambition at the
start of the season was to avoid relegation. Had
their form not been patchy in their last three
games they could have won the title. But there
is always next season. Well done lads!
It was easier than
anyone would have thought for 6-men Flyers as
they demolished little-to-play-for Reading
Arrows. For the Blackhawks, it is all leading to
the show-down against the Aztec Jaguars for the
Division 1 title on Friday 4 April at the Woking
Leisure Centre.
The Flyers were in
the mood to play basketball and the first period
score (37-6) was a true reflection of that.
There was simply some breath-taking transition
down the court by Paice, Allum, Long and Ociepa,
initiated by some great defensive work by
Roberts and Rogier.
The rest of the game
felt more like a friendly to the credit of the
competitive but good-natured Reading players and
referees Mark Ennis and Morrel Hills.
MVP was yet again
the gravity-defying Oskar Ociepa with a
sensational 38 points, 7 assists, 6 steals and 7
rebounds. There were simply no under-achievers
in this Blackhawks team but Francis Long (18
points, 20 rebounds) and Laurens Rogier (14
points, 6 blocks and 16 rebounds) got into the
high MVP honours.

B'day present for skipper in display fit for a
Mayor
It was the start we
have come to expect from the Flyers as they took
to the court in the presence of the Mayor and
Mayoress of Woking. The Reading Arrows were
faced with an unrelenting attacking force that
most teams in Division 1 have had to deal with
all season.
26-8 was a good
first quarter score and Coach Damian Knode was
happy to spread the court time evenly amongst
his 11 players on the night without the risk of
spoiling his birthday.
In the second half,
the Blackhawks were caught between two minds.
Should they entertain their special guests
and the packed balcony or should they stick to
the task and go for the century? In the end, the
supporters were treated to flashes of
breath-taking offensive play but most of us knew
the Blackhawks were capable for a lot more.
Mayor Bryan Cross
was impressed by the game, happy that Woking won
and happy that he understood the game of
basketball a whole lot better after his visit at
the Woking Leisure Centre. Club Chairman Keith
Farmer and Head Coach Costas Rakitzis were only
too happy to promise another invitation to the
crucial game against the Aztec Jaguars on April
4th, the game which by all accounts will decide
the Division 1 champions this season.
MVP was once again
the unstoppable Oskar Ociepa but Jim Grainger,
Chris Paice and Laurens Rogier were impressive
too.

Flyers outclassed by Kingston in Surrey Cup
encounter
Blackhawk Flyers -
Kingston 2nd Team 63 - 90
(12-Feb-08)
This was simply not
the Flyers we are accustomed to. A shadow of
their real selves could not get any rhythm going
throughout this first venture outside the Wessex
League.
With Laurens Rogier,
Oscar Ociepa and Jim Grainger all feeling under
the weather and with their inspirational captain
Damian Knode out injured it was always going to
be a challenge against a team that shot the
lights out.
Roberts and Rogier
did their best to keep the score to some
respectable level but this was not the Flyers'
night. The final score does not reflect the
character and talent in the Blackhawks team who
will pick themselves up and take it out on their
next opponents this Friday.
MVP was Laurens
Rogier with 28.5 MVP points. Steve Roberts lead
the scorers' board with 18 points and amassed
27.0 MVP points.
Blackhawk Flyers: S Roberts (18), J Grainger
(5), L Rogier (8), F Long (4), C Paice (9), M
Allum (7), E Okorocha (2) and O Ociepa (10), J
Dunderdale.
It was evident from the start that the
Blackhawks were ready for this, one of the most
important games of the season against the league
leaders from South Bucks. Some great offensive
plays by the whole team, gave Damian Knode and
Jim Grainger the opportunities to score 9 and 4
points respectively. Steve Roberts contributed
to scoring too and the Flyers were looking good
at the end of the first period with 15-10 on the
scoreboard.
Two quick baskets from the Comets at the start
of the 2nd, put the Blackhawks under
pressure. A time-out and a couple of tactical
substitutions restored some order but at 30-22
the home team lost their concentration on two
occasions and allowed their opponents to finish
strong closing the first half at 30-27.
Woking needed to regroup, settle down, pick
their shots and stop turning the ball over.
Eight minutes into the 3rd period the
score stood at 41-42 and a second time-out was
required. Player/Coach Damian Knode and
Head-Coach Costas Rakitzis rallied their players
who responded magnificently. In the next two
minutes of playing time, the Flyers scored 8
points with no reply winning the period 21-15.
With the score poised at 51-42, the guards went
to work in defence tirelessly pressing the ball
and denying shots from the arc. The ‘bigs’, led
by the majestic 7’1 Laurens Rogier smothered
most of the Comets’ inside plays and as the
clock ticked on, South Bucks found themselves
with a mountain to climb. A good crowd at the
Woking Leisure Centre left satisfied that the
Blackhawks look in good shape to challenge for
the Division 1 title this year.
MVP was Laurens Rogier with 40.0 MVP points, 10
blocks and 8 points. Francis Long and Steve
Roberts impressed with 26.0 and 25.5 MVP points
respectively while Damian Knode was the main
points contributor with 22.
Blackhawk Flyers: D Knode (22), S Roberts (14),
J Grainger (8), L Rogier (8), F Long (7), C
Paice (6), M Allum (5), J Dunderdale (2), E
Okorocha and B Abubakar.
The only regret
about this game is that it was not watched by
2,000 supporters who would have enjoyed every
moment of it.
After a very nervous start by both sides, the
Jaguars were first to draw blood with former
Blackhawk Thomas Politi. But this only succeeded
in stinging the Flyers into action who went on
to reply with baskets from Grainger, Ociepa and
the giant Rogier.
It was not long before Steve Roberts started
enjoying himself sinking an unexpected 3-pointer
and a powerful layup to boot making the score
11-4 eight minutes into the game.
Uncharacteristically, the Flyers let off the
pace a little and that allowed Alexander Taylor,
the Jaguars' captain, to cease the opportunity
and score three baskets. These coupled with one
more from Esrich, put the Jaguars ahead by a
point, a lead they maintained to the end of the
first period.
Coach
Damian Knode rallied his troops during the break
and with the aid of an ingenious tactical tweak,
the Blackhawks stormed the Jaguars in the second
period to win it 21-8.
There was more of
the same in the third and we can talk about
matching the Jaguars for pace and strength every
step of the way and winning just about every
defensive rebound going but there was something
about the Blackhawks that made it all work for
them. They played for each other and they played
as a team. There times when the irrepressible
Oskar Ociepa combined with Paice, Allum and Long
to produce some breath-taking basketball. But it
was all starting from the back. The intimidating
presence of Laurens Rogier under the basket
forced miss after miss by the Aztecs and with
contributions from the power-houses Jim Grainger
and Steve Roberts, the three 'bigs' crashed the
defensive boards 29 times. By the end of the
third, the Blackhawks were enjoying an 18-point
lead.
It wasn't over just yet though. The Flyers were
only too aware that the Jaguars ought to be
treated with respect for they are capable of
biting back. They kept the pace up and eight
minutes into the fourth quarter they were
leading 68-45. They can be forgiven for stepping
off the gas at that point presenting the Aztecs
with the opportunity to go for a mini run of
four baskets in the final two minutes.
But there was no fairytale comeback. This was an
important win for the Flyers who are now
beginning to believe that having beaten last
year's champions this might just be their turn
to win the title!
Oskar Ociepa had a
great game scoring 23 points and 43.5 MVP
points. Jim Grainger was back at his best
scoring 12 points, claiming 11 rebounds and
amassing 37.5 MVP points. Steve Roberts and
Laurens Rogier dominated under the baskets (23
of the 50 rebounds between them) and initiated
many of the fast-breaks.

Flyers pick off
Lemmings with Clinical Performance
The
first quarter started promisingly enough with
the ball won off the tip by Rogier finding
Grainger to hit
Ociepa for
the dunked finish. The quarter continued
with some lovely basketball from the flyers who
moved the ball beautifully on offense and where
solid on defence finding themselves leading the
Lemmings 14-6 at one point. However at this
point the Flyers took their foot of the gas
which aloud the lemmings back into the quarter
to finish just two points down at 14-12.
However the Flyers weren’t going to make the
same mistake twice. They came out in the 2nd
with a job to do and they did it well. Awesome
defence only allowed the lemmings 2 points for
the quarter and allowed the Blackhawks to turn
on their fast break game with some impressive
fast flowing moves leading to an end of quarter
score of 37-16.
The
3rd quarter picked up where the
second left off. Hard defence coupled with fast
flowing offense. With Rogier under the basket on
defence swatting away anything that came near
and the fast break nearly unstoppable the Flyers
had the game all but wrapped up by the end of
the third with the scores at 49-18. That’s just
4 points conceded in two quarters!
With the game won the flyers eased off a bit in
the fourth and finish the game out 65-31.
A good win and maybe more importantly a strong
team performance before the big match against
the Jaguars on Tuesday.
The highlight
of the game was a new all-time Club record for
blocks in a game by a player (11 blocks by
Laurens Rogier) and a new all-time Club record
for most blocks in a game by a team (13).
MVP was Oscar Ociepa with 42.5
MVP points.

Not
exactly a vintage Flyers performance but grit
and determination earned Woking a vital victory.
Oskar Ociepa had a
great game scoring 36 points and amassing an
impressive 59.0 MVP points.
Laurence Rogier,
after a slow start, found his rhythm and crashed
the board 17 times and collected 36.2 MVP
points.

Flyers do the double on
Woodley
Blackhawk Flyers - Woodley
Green Flash 87 - 55
(23-Nov-07)
Having beaten the
Woodley Warriors away 11 days ago, the Flyers
were looking forward to welcoming the Green
Flash at the Woking Leisure Centre.
But with the Blackhawks fielding only a 7-man
side through missing influential players such as
Simko, Paice, Allum, K Ociepa, Dunderdale and
their 7ft center Laurens Rogier, this fixture
was looking a bit trickier than originally
thought.
These thoughts might have played on the players'
minds in the opening minutes with a number of
easy baskets going begging. Finally LeTourneau
opened the scoring and the Flyers begun to
settle a little but this was not their usual
flowing, free-scoring style their supporters
have become accustomed to. It was time to put on
a good defensive display to contain the
opposition and the quarter ended with Woking
leading 16–11.
In the second quarter the Flyers found their
rhythm with strong drives to the basket from
Francis Long and with tight defence leading to
fast breaks, the opportunities were created and
converted by the on-form Damian Knode.
It took a while for the Green Flash to react but
by then the Flyers had opened up a useful lead
to close the first half 38-24.
By the beginning of the third quarter, the game
had an air of inevitability about it with the
Flyers moving through the gears and producing
some smooth basketball. The offensive plays were
working well for Knode and Ociepa and the boards
being dominated by Grainger, Okorocha and
Abubakar. By the end of the third the Flyers
where in a strong position leading 61–42.
It wasn't all over just yet though. Okorocha and
Ociepa were in foul trouble and the Flyers had
to keep their game tight. This they did
continuing the fourth where they’d left off in
the third and managed to extend their lead to
finish winners 87–55.
A
good win for the Flyers in a game that could
have proved difficult. A great debut for new
signing Bashir Abubakar whose rebounding ability
and abundant athleticism will be potent weapons
in the Flyers arsenal for the rest of the
season.
Skipper Damian Knode
had a storming game scoring 41 points (seven
3-pointers which is a new Club record) and
amassing 55.5 MVP points. Oscar Ociepa on a
quiet evening by his standards scored 17 points,
pulled down 14 rebounds and collected 45.0 MVP
points. Ben LeTourneau and Francis Long had a
good game too with 22.0 and 20.0 MVP points
respectively.
Q1: 16-11;
Q2: 22-13; Q3: 23-18;

Flyers epitomise Club Principles and Claim
Crucial Away Win
Without Grainger,
Simko, Paice and Long, against a team that beat
the South Bucks convincingly a week ago, the
Flyers looked surprisingly confident. They had
reason to be. The eight that made it to the game
looked sharp and ready for action.
Even though the
Warriors drew blood first, the Flyers took
control and the Rogier-Ociepa-Knode (ROK)
concert was in full swing shortly after. By the
time the Warriors looked up they were trailing
13-2. Okorocha added a couple of his own and the
first period made good reading at 25-18.
It was clear that
the Warriors were beginning to worry seriously
every time they went to the basket because they
were either met by a brick wall (Okorocha), the
grit of Dunderdale, the athleticism of the
unshakable Oskar Ociepa or the tentacles of 7ft
Laurens Rogier. Despite all that, the Warriors
led by the great Paul Hearn, managed to win the
quarter 29-26.
In the third
quarter, the Flyers discovered the best way to
shut Hearn down while the experienced Knode and
the irrepressible Ociepa monopolised the scoring
to finish the quarter 76-64.
The Warriors were
beginning to tire now but the Flyers were in no
mood to let off the pace. Surprisingly, the
Warriors decided to play full-court press and
that was when the bench deployed Mark Allum, one
the quickest guards in the League. That kept the
Woodley defence honest and allowed the magical
trio to ROK Woodley into submission.
Oskar Ociepa had a
storming game (37 points, 5 steals and 68.5 (!)
MVP points). Rogier was golden with 12 points, 7
blocks and 43.0 MVP points. Damian Knode was
back at his best scoring 25 points but
Okorocha's defensive contribution earned him
20.8 MVP points.

Under-strength Flyers hit by Comets
South
Buck Comets - Blackhawk Flyers 84 - 57
(30-Oct-07)
Without Rogier,
Grainger, Simko and Allum, the Flyers were in
for a difficult evening.
Despite fielding an
under-strength team, the Blackhawks, led by
Oscar Ociepa, started the game determined to
make a fight of it. Unfortunately, it was the
Comets who found their rhythm first and finished
the quarter 24-15.
A few of the issues
were ironed out in the 2nd, the tactics changed,
the Flyers got it together and won the quarter
19-14.
In the third
quarter, the Flyers managed to hold their own
and kept the Comets quiet at 13-13. For a moment
it looked as though the Blackhawks could win
this game without three key forwards as they had
the better guards. It was not to be.
The collapse came in
the fourth as the Flyers lost their way and
allowed the Comets to run riot.
It was difficult for
Oscar Ociepa (40.0 MVP points) to do it all on
his own and even though his brother Kamil (11
rebounds, 31.0 MVP points) tried his best, it
was not enough on the night.
An encouraging debut
by Francis Long with 6 points and 14.5 MVP
points.
Q1: 15-24;
Q2: 19-14; Q3: 13-13;

Ociepa (26), C Paice (2), K Ociepa (14), F Long
(6), B LeTourneau.
This was not pretty
but the Flyers had a job to do and they did it
well.
The game started
with both teams sinking two 3-pointers each and
it looked like the Lemmings were determined to
make the home advantage count for them. The
Flyers had other ideas. They steadied the ship
and slowly wore the Lemmings down with their
superior rebounding mainly thanks to 18 rebounds
from Laurens Rogier, 10 from Michael Simko and 9
from Oskar Ociepa.
Skipper Damian Knode
handed out three assists in the second quarter
and Oskar Ociepa simply tore the Aztec defence
apart with some gravity-defying lay-ups.
The third quarter
started with an explosion of points from Damian
Knode who sunk three 3-pointers and a field goal
in 2 minutes combining well with Laurens Rogier
who dished out three assists. Michael Simko and
Emeka Okorocha soon followed suit and the Flyers
were now pulling away and enjoying themselves.
In the fourth, the 'bigs'
Simko and Rogier decided it was time to put some
points of their own on the score board and the
Flyers were now chasing their second consecutive
century in as many games.
That was achieved
thanks to a 3-pointer, a steal and basket from
Oskar Ociepa.
A great start to the
season for the Flyers who now cannot wait to
welcome the Camberley Eagles to the Woking
Leisure Centre on the 26th.
MVP was Laurens
Rogier who scooped 56 MVP points 18 rebounds and
7 blocks. Oskar Ociepa came a very close second
with 55.5 MVP points and was top scorer with 28
points. Damian Knode sunk 5 three-pointers and
amassed 32.5 MVP points. We welcome Michael
Simko in the honours roll with 21 MVP points and
10 rebounds.

Shock
and Awe at Farnborough as Flyers Tear Phantoms
Apart
You would be
forgiven at times to think that you were
watching a professional outfit performing poetry
on the court. The Blackhawks led by their
inspirational captain Damian Knode, the electric
Oskar Ociepa, the powerhouse that is Jim
Grainger, the deadly shooting of Ben Le Tourneau
and their majestic 7ft 1 center Laurens Rogier
completely overwhelmed Farnborough who put up as
good a fight as they could under the
circumstances.
It wasn't long after
the tip-off that Jim Grainger powered his way
through the Phantoms' defence to put the Flyers
10-3 ahead and on their way to a 23-5 lead
before their opponents were forced into a
time-out. Having established a handsome lead
(29-11) at the end of the first quarter, it was
the turn of the Flyers' strong bench to take the
court on the second.
At times the Flyers
were caught napping in the key for more than 3
seconds and allowed two cheap baskets to get
through while they weren't watching their
baseline. But all was put right after a time-out
and with the help of Jason Dunderdale's crisp
shooting the half-time buzzer found the
Blackhawks leading 49-32.
The Phantoms might
have thought they were in with a chance at the
beginning of the third period but the Flyers had
other ideas. It was an explosion of basketball
as Rogier, Ociepa and Knode took charge of the
proceedings and produced some breath-taking
plays to the delight of the travelling
supporters.
Having finished the
third period 82-40 the next target was the
century. In a party atmosphere, Oskar Ociepa had
a clear run to the basket from a Laurens Rogier
pass but declined the cries for a dunk as he
safely put the ball away to record this reason's
first 3-digit score. The final 109-50 score line
will send shock waves across Division 1 and a
strong message that the Blackhawks mean business
this season.
Serious business!
MVP was Laurens
Rogier who scooped 62(!) MVP points and with 21
rebounds came very close to beating the club
record for rebounds in a game (23). Oskar Ociepa
stamped his authority with 26 points and 52.5
MVP points. Jim Grainger amassed 32 MVP points
and Damian Knode impressed with 24 points and
29.5 MVP points. Emeka Okorocha also had a good
game in the paint and collected 22 MVP points.

First league game of
the new season is away to the Farnborough
Phantoms on Wednesday 26 September (20:20 tip).
Come on down to
support the Flyers and see our new summer
signings in action.
We welcome
three new 'bigs': Michal Simko from Slovakia,
Kamil Ociepa from Poland and our 7ft 1 Center
Laurens Rogier from the Netherlands.
What
difference a week makes - and a couple of
players...
Playing with
an ankle twice its normal size is not always a
good idea but skipper Knode had to sub himself
half-way through the second period to help his
battling team mates. Julio Politi was introduced
to the game at that point too and it is worth
noting that all of the seven 3-pointers in the
game were sunk from that moment on.
It took 5
minutes to steady the ship and normal service
was resumed in the 3rd period. The Flyers were
now full of confidence, clocking up assists,
steals, rebounds and scoring from any distance
with reassuring regularity. It was a stunning
performance at the right time in the game and
after a 28-8 emphatic 3rd period score line, it
was always going to be tough for the Warriors to
lift themselves and compete with any real chance
in the final period.
The
Blackhawks ran out comfortable winners and look
certain to claim the 3rd place in the League.
MVP was
Julio Politi (6 assists, 7 steals, 8 points and
36.2 MVP points), narrowly beating Sam Starling
(12 rebounds, 14 points and 35.5 MVP points) and
Tomas Politi (23 points and 33.0 MVP points).
A solid
performance from Jim Grainger (13 rebounds, 13
points and 25.5 MVP points) and a captain's
performance by Damian Knode who scored 15 points
and earned 20.8 MVP points.

Flyers lose their nerve and a one-point game
against Windsor
It was toe
to toe all the way and with 1 minute 28 seconds
to go, the Flyers managed to squander a 5-point
lead and lose the game by one point.
Without
Damian Knode and Julio Politi, the Flyers did
well but they gave the ball away too cheaply at
the most critical point in the game.
MVP was Jim
Grainger who scored 17 points and amassed 46.0
MVP points. Good performances by Emeka Okorocha
(22.0 MVP points) and Sam Starling (16 rebounds
and 21.3 MVP points).

Flyers demolish Woodley in a flash
Blackhawk
Flyers - Woodley Green Flash 117-90
(13-Mar-07)
It was
vintage Flyers from beginning to end. An awesome
display of teamwork and understanding. Call it
what you like, this is the sort of game that
deserved a large audience and ticket sales.
Player-Coach
Damian Knode was once again full of praise for
his players. "We ran our plays well and kept our
defence tight for most of the game. On the night
we can beat anyone in this League. Most
importantly, we all had fun" he said after
the game.
The team
spirit was there for all to see as the assists
kept coming and coming - 25 in all. Despite the
relatively low number of rebounds, the Flyers
did not look weak in this department mainly
because there weren't too many stray balls. Both
teams kept an unprecedented scoring percentage
that kept the entertainment level sky-high.
The Flyers
are looking strong in 3rd place and still within
a stone's throw from the top spot.
MVP was the
tireless James Grainger with 22 points, 11
rebounds, 5 assists (one of which was simply
breathtaking) and a season personal best 60.0
(!) MVP points.
A remarkable
72% field goal percentage put Damian Knode
second in the honours list with a season
personal best 35 points and 55.0 MVP points.
Tomas
Politi's darting runs and unrelenting pace,
earned him 29 points, 6 assists and 53.5 MVP
points.
The
ever-green Julio Politi ran the proceedings from
the point with the poise and experience of the
international player that he is. 11 rebounds, 4
assists and 37.7 MVP points is a good haul by
anyone's standards.
Q1: 27-24;
Q2: 26-17; Q3: 37-12;
Q4: 27-37.
Blackhawk
Flyers: D Knode (35), J Politi (12), J

S Gardner (8), T Politi (29).
More like a light wind than a blizzard at
Basingstoke
This was a
much happier squad that took the floor at
Basingstoke and having left last week's
defeat behind them, the Flyers made light work
of the Blizzards.
Player-Coach
Damian Knode was beaming after the game.
"Everyone had a great time. I asked the lads to
go out there, play as a team and express
themselves - and so they did" he said. "We ran
our offences well but we were also solid in
defence. It was a great team performance and
everyone had some decent court time".
The Flyers
are looking good in 3rd place and always within
shouting distance from the top spot.
The MVP
honours go to Sam Starling who scored 22 points
and pulled down at least 10 rebounds.
Q1: 19-16;
Q2: 31-8; Q3: 25-11; Q4:

Bucks...
Blackhawk
Flyers - South Bucks 69-78 (20-Feb-07)
Having sunk
one out of 13 3-pointers, no one can say the
shots dropped for the Flyers today. In sharp
contrast, the Bucks sunk at least six.
The MVP
honours go to Julio Politi who scored 14 points,
pulled down 10 rebounds, provided 6 of the 9
assists and stole 7 times.

Flyers swoop over the Valley to claim top spot
Lodden
Valley - Blackhawk Flyers 63-91
(11-Feb-07)
Despite the
absence of Tomas Politi, seven-men Flyers put in
an arresting performance to beat last year's
champions in their own home and send a message
to the rest of the League that they are serious
contenders for the top spot.
Julio Politi
is re-inventing himself as a point guard this
time scoring 24 points whilst directing
proceedings, and the irrepressible skipper
Damian Knode sunk 27 points to keep his quest
for the League's top scorer well and truly
alive.
But the
honours as MVP went to Sam Starling who,
according to Knode who beamed after the game:
"Sam played out of his skin crashing the boards
and scoring 22 points - an awesome display".
Blackhawk
Flyers: D Knode (27), J Politi (24), J
Dunderdale (?), J Grainger (?), S Starling (22),
S Gardner (?), E Okorocha (?).
Flyers ground the Eagles to keep pressure for
top spot
Despite the
absence of Sam Starling due to flu, the Flyers
went about their task with rigour and
discipline.
After
shaking off the ghosts of the last performance
during a very tight first period, the Flyers
showed their pedigree in the second and third
quarters as they ran their plays, executed their
fast-breaks and maintained their concentration
in defence.
Coming into
the last period leading by 15 points, it was
easy to step off the gas defensively and allowed
the determined Eagles to claw back some points.
But with 5 minutes on the clock, the Flyers
killed the game and cruised to their 10th
successive victory in the League to maintain the
pressure on their rivals for the top spot.
The honours
for the most valuable player (MVP) went to the
ever-green Julio Politi who pulled down 18
rebounds, made 8 assists and 9 steals to equal a
long-standing Club record, scored 9 points and
amassed 45.5 MVP points.
Great
performance too by Tomas Politi who scored 26
points and gathered 44.5 MVP
points). Jim Grainger also impressed with 13
rebounds and 23 MVP points.

Q2: 21-12; Q3: 17-12;

(6), J Dunderdale (5), J Grainger (16), S
Starling, S Gardner, E Okorocha (3).
Without
their inspirational captain Damian Knode, the
Flyers made hard work of a game they should have
won a lot easier against an injury-ridden
six-men Woodley.
Just as well
the Blackhawks won the first period by 11 points
because they lost all the other periods by 5, 3
and 2 points to make for a very tense final
seconds.
"It's a sign
of a great team if it can grind out a result on
such an off day" said Coach Knode after the
game.
Although
very little dropped for MVP James Grainger, his
awesome performance under the baskets (21
rebounds) went a long way to helping the Flyers
to their one-point winner.
Despite an
uncharacteristically low shooting percentage,
Julio Politi still managed 21 points to keep the
score within the respectable range.
Q1: 19-8;
Q2: 11-14; Q3: 13-18;
Q4: 17-19.

Flyers: J Politi (21), T Politi (12), J

A show of strength at Reading as Flyers crash
the Arrows
It was a
thoroughly professional display by the Flyers
who did not step off the gas from tip to buzzer
to record their fourth century in a row and the
fifth of the season.
There seems
to be a pattern developing of late as opponents
put up a good fight in the first period and then
start accepting the inevitable as the Flyers
pound on that unrelenting pressure for which
they are becoming well-known.
The
Blackhawks used all the offensive weaponry at
their disposal but the good news is that their
defence was tighter and more disciplined than
ever before.
Having
finished the half 43-26, the Flyers decided to
go for the century rather than take the easy
win. Led by the irrepressible Julio, the baskets
came from every angle and every corner of the
court in a delicious mix of fast-breaks,
shooting, clever inter-plays, lay-ups and power
shots. Add 48 rebounds and 19 steals and you
have yourself a dish heavy enough for any
defence to digest.
A fantastic
performance by the ever-green Julio Politi (33
points, 8 steals, 14 rebounds and 76.0 MVP
points).
Very good
performances from Damian Knode (25 points and
38.5 MVP points), Sam Starling (8 points, 12
rebounds and 38.5 MVP points), Tomas Politi (14
points, 7 assists and 33.5 MVP points) and Jim
Grainger (16 points, 11 rebounds and 32.7 MVP
points).
Full credit
to the Arrows who kept going and kept the smile
on their faces to the very end.

Impressive Flyers brush aside REME to stay at
the top
Blackhawk
Flyers - REME 107-72 (05-Dec-06)
It was all a
bit too easy for the Flyers who, despite their
height disadvantage, claimed another 2 points to
stay at the top of Division 1.
It didn't
take long for Damian Knode and Tomas Politi to
stamp their authority on the game by scoring 22
of the 24 points in the first period. The
deficit was kept to a minimum (11) mainly thanks
to some solid defending by Sam Starling and
breath-taking rebounding by James Grainger.
The
Blackhawks were now flying. At times, it was
difficult to follow the ball as the Flyers
transitioned the ball down the court so quickly,
the Royal Engineers had hardly had any
time to react.
In the third
period, defensive caution was thrown to the wind
as REME were allowed to score 21 points. The
offensive assault though was unrelenting as
3-pointers rained down on the unfortunate
Engineers.
It was time
for trying out new things in the fourth as well
as providing the opportunity for everyone to
contribute especially after Grainger and
Starling got into foul trouble.
Great
performances from Tomas Politi (26 points, 5
steals and 49.0 MVP points) and James Grainger
(14 rebounds, 15 points and 47.0 MVP points).
Solid contributions from Damian Knode (29 points
and 34.0 MVP points) and Julio Politi (19 points
and 30.0 MVP points).

Awesome display as Flyers break all-time Club
record
Those who
came to watch this game, witnessed an awesome
attacking display which broke a long-standing
Club record held by the 2003/4 under-16 team who
beat R&B 121-20 in their season's opening game
back in September 2003.
The Vipers
started lively and led 5-3 in the first minute.
But that's when Damian Knode and his crew
started enjoying themselves. Knode himself hit
four 3-pointers and with Grainger, Starling and
Tomas Politi contributing consistently, the
Flyers finished the 1st period strong
32-7.
This was now
dress rehearsal for the game vs REME next week
and as the unselfish Julio Politi directed
proceedings, Knode, Starling and Gardner clocked
up the points to finish the first half 66-15.
More of the
same in the second half but the Flyers also
found time to experiment. The secret with the
Flyers squad is that as one player steps off the
gas, another takes over and then another and
then another. There is no let-off, there is no
escape. They possess experience, fitness, skill,
strength and awesome shooting power. Not to
mention determination. Stuart Gardner attempted
4 and scored 4 but he epitomised the Flyers
spirit when he dived for the ball even when the
score was 76-17.
Great
performances from Damian Knode (32 points and
52.5 MVP points), Sam Starling (88% field goal
accuracy, 11 rebounds, 20 points and 46 MVP
points), James Grainger (11 rebounds, 20 points
and 42 MVP points) and Tomas Politi (26 points
and 45.5 MVP points). The entire team gave
away only 12 turnovers.
Q1: 32-7;
Q2: 34-8; Q3: 25-15; Q4:
35-19.

Thriller at the Valley as gritty Flyers beat
Woodley in extra time
Woodley
Green Flash - Blackhawk Flyers 104-99
(20-Nov-06)
If there was
EVER a game of two halves, this was it! As the
Flyers thought they would run away with it,
Woodley changed their tactics to take the game
to nail-biting extra time.
It took the
Blackhawks a little time to settle in the first
period but after a time-out, the ship was
steadied and led by the free-scoring Damian
Knode and Julio Politi they finished the period
22-12.
The flood
gates opened in the 2nd when once again Damian
Knode and Julio Politi had a field day assisted
by the power houses Grainger and Okorocha.
Things
started going wrong in the 3rd when Woodley
changed tactics and begun to erode the Flyers'
lead. More of the same in the 4th and the Flyers
found themselves drawing 89-89 at the end of
normal time.
With Woodley
having the psychological advantage, the extra
time did not look promising. But what Woodley
did not count on was the inspirational
leadership of captain Damian Knode, the skill
and experience of MVP Julio Politi and the grit
and shear determination of the entire Flyers
squad. It was a battle to the last second that
would have graced any court, anywhere.
Another
great performance from Julio Politi (33 points,
11 rebounds and 50.2 MVP points). Damian Knode
scored 33 points and 34.7 MVP points. James
Grainger also impressed with 18 points and 27.3
MVP points.
Solid
all-round performance by the Flyers who never
looked like losing their early lead and look set
to lead the league for a while.
It didn't
take long for the Flyers to find their rhythm,
establish an early 15-2 lead and finish the 1st
quarter 25-15 with most baskets coming from
Damian Knode and Tomas Politi.
More of the
same in the 2nd period but in addition to Knode,
baskets started coming from everywhere.
In the 3rd,
the starting five secured a 29-point lead early
enough to give the bench an opportunity to
sharpen their claws. They did a great job to
maintain the lead and finish the quarter 68-39.
Despite
losing 81-47 halfway through the 4th period,
Basingstoke never gave up and finished strong to
draw the quarter 22-22. It was too late though
and the Flyers had another opportunity to field
all of their bench players and still secure a
comfortable 29-point win.
Best
performances came from captain Damian Knode (26
points and 38.0 MVP points), Jim Grainger (15
points and 37.0 MVP points), Julio Politi (13
points and 34.0 MVP points). Emeka Okorocha,
Tomas Politi and Sam Starling also impressed.

Q2: 24-13; Q3: 19-11;
Q4: 22-22.

The Flyers down the Comets to claim season's
first away victory
South Bucks
Comets - Blackhawk Flyers 60-79 (7-Nov-06)
No one has
managed to beat the Comets in their back yard
but the Flyers led from start to finish in this
away fixture to claim famous victory against
last season's runners-up.
"We played
as a team in offence and for each other in
defence; but above all we kept our composure and
got our tactics right" said captain Damian Knode
after the game.
Led by the
awesome Jim Grainger and the hugely experienced
Julio Politi, the Flyers started the game firing
on all cylinders and by the time the Comets
realised what was happening, they were 10 points
behind.
To say the
2nd and 3rd periods were closely contested will
be an under-statement as both periods ended
17-17.
It was
crucial that the Flyers kept both their
composure and concentration in the fourth
quarter, particularly at the beginning - and
that they did. As time was running out, the
Comets dropped their heads and the Blackhawks
kept the momentum going to the very end to claim
a very important win.
Best
performances came from Jim Grainger (10
rebounds, 26 points and a massive 53.0 MVP
points), Julio Politi (17 - yes seventeen -
rebounds, 18 points and 34.0 MVP points) and
Damian Knode (20 points and 26.5 MVP points).

Flyers destroy five-man Odiham in away cup
fixture
Odiham - Blackhawk Flyers
53-119 (24-Oct-06)
Five-man
Odiham were no match for the Flyers tonight in
this very one-sided affair.
Best
performances came from Jim Grainger (24 points
and 41.5 MVP points), Julio Politi (24 points
and 40.5 MVP points), Damian Knode (22 points
and 40.0 MVP points), Sam Starling (16 points
and 30.5 MVP points) and Stuart Gardner (17
points and 25.5 MVP points points).
Q1: 31-4;
Q2: 21-17; Q3: 31-24;
Q4:36-8
Blackhawk
Flyers: D Knode (22), J Politi (24), T
Politi (6), S Gardner (17), J Dunderdale (4), J
Grainger (24), B Woods (2), R Lansdell (2), C
Okorocha (2), S Starling (16).
The Flyers
led from start to finish in this match, but were
never able to pull far enough ahead of the
Jaguars to make it comfortable.
With 2
players fouled out (including the influential
Jim Grainger) and Emeka Okorocha on 4 fouls, it
got very tight in the last quarter as the
Jaguars tried to claw their way back into it.
The last 10
seconds of game time seemed to last about 10
minutes as both sides played the tactical game,
but crucial free throws in the last 3 seconds
from Damian Knode, just pulled the Hawks out of
reach.
Well
refereed by Mark Ennis and Phil Davies who
handled the tense battle between these 2 even
sides well.
Well-drilled
Flyers playing to their strengths was the
winning recipe on Tuesday evening at Tomlinscote
where they landed their first win of the season.
From the
tip-off, Julio Politi wasted no time feeding
Damian Knode who went on to draw first blood.
The Flyers kept their defence tight and, led by
the powerful forward Jim Grainger and the
experienced Damian Knode, went ahead 17-9 after
7 minutes. At that point, concentration waned a
little and Reading were allowed to score 10
points without reply. The ship was soon steadied
and the quarter finished 19-20.
Whatever
coach Knode and Julio Politi said during the
break seemed to work well. In the 2nd quarter it
was a family show as Julio directed proceedings
and 16-year old Tomas Politi scored 10 points of
his own. Knode hit a 3-pointer for good measure,
Lansdell sunk 2 out of 2 free throws and Jason
Dunderdale rounded off a hugely satisfying
quarter to post a 42-33 half-time score.
The Flyers
were now cruising. After 6 minutes into the 3rd,
the gap was 22 points and it was time for the
rest of the squad to contribute.
This was
fast and entertaining basketball from both sides
with Grainger, Knode, Tomas Politi, Dunderdale
and Starling all scoring for the Blackhawks.
Player-coach
Knode gave everyone the opportunity to
participate in the fourth quarter without
jeopardising the final result but apart from two
good baskets from Ben Woods, it was once again
Politi senior and Knode who piled on the points.
Best
performances came from Julio Politi (15
rebounds, 5 assists, 23 points and a massive 56
MVP points) and Jim Grainger (13 points and 36.5
MVP points).
The referees
Mark Ennis and Pete Dimond were very good and
proved their worth by handling a tricky moment
very well.
Blackhawk
Flyers: D Knode (20), J Politi (23), T
Politi (15), S Gardner, J Dunderdale (3), J

Flyers win second against the Goats
Blackhawk Flyers - Guildford Goats 75 - 66
Last
Tuesday, the Flyers won their first friendly of
the new season against the Guildford Goats by 10
points. Today, both teams concentrated more on
the basketball and although the physical
challenges went into the mix, they did not spoil
the game.
Both teams
had periods when they played very attractive
basketball but there were also times when they
went to sleep and let their opponents either
close the gap or take the lead.
Damien Knode
was disappointed with Flyers' shooting
percentage. There were also moments when the
team did not seem to gel but there were also
moments when the offensive movement was simply
breath-taking.
This may
have not been the Flyer's best performance but
scrapping out games like these is a sign of a
good team; a team that will hopefully peak at
the right time and mount a serious challenge for
the title.
Blackhawk
Flyers: D Knode, J Politi, T Politi, S
Gardner, J Dunderdale, J Grainger, T Bowen (not
used).
