Summer 2008

We had our first summer training session on Saturday and I was very pleased with the amount of talent this new squad contains.

I would especially like to welcome the players who have moved up from the U12 squad.  This week I met Tolu, Noah, Shem, Joel and Julian.  I know there are more players coming up and, with the standard displayed by these five, I am really looking forward to meeting all of you in the weeks to come.

Tim came along for his first Blackhawks session and showed me that there is a lot of basketball talent out there not currently playing for any club.  If you play and would like to join one of the friendliest and most professionally run basketball clubs in the country, please come along to one of our advertised sessions.

Looking forward to a successful and enjoyable summer,

                                              Coach Dean

Win one, lose one in last games of the season

Blackhawks U14 Boys v Guildford Heat 67 - 23
Surrey CVL
 (27/4/08)

Blackhawks dominated this game from the start against local rivals Guildford Heat and ran out comfortable winners. The game was played in good spirit by both sides who are a credit to their respective clubs.

Blackhawks: Jones(2), Adamson(4), Fleming(6), Little, Farmer, Dean(6), Allen(6), Eggar(8), Barber(20), Lucas(10) + 5 bonus as heat had less than 10 players

-----------------------------------------------

Blackhawks U14 Boys v Cobham 31 - 58
Surrey CVL

This was a much tougher game than the first of the day against a Cobham side looking to confirm 2nd place in the League and a place in the Finals.

Blackhawks seemed nervous from the start and never really got into their pattern. Cobham on the other hand were well-drilled and deadly accurate under the basket. In Quarter 4 the Blackhawks had their best spell and won the period 23-8, but the damage had already been done and all they could do was make the score look a little more respectable.

Blackhawks: Jones(2), Adamson(4), Fleming(6), Little, Farmer, Dean(2), Allen(2), Eggar(4), Barber(6), Lucas(5)

High on effort, but not good enough on the day in double-header
Blackhawks U14 Boys v Sunbury Sonics 46 - 48
Surrey CVL
 (13/4/08)

This was a evenly matched and keenly fought game against the old enemy of Sunbury Sonics. The fact that Sonics were 2 players short and would incur a 10 point penalty at the end of the game, seemed to be on the minds of both sets of players as they kept a close eye on the score.

Blackhawks had their chances but had no luck around the rim and the ball just would not drop for them. Not so for Sonics, where Rogers and Richardson were on form to score 30 points between them. Sonics won the game play by 12 points, so with the 10 point penalty, just won the match by 2.

Blackhawks will feel disappointed as this is a game they should have been able to win, even without the penalty points.

Blackhawks: Morales, Jones, Adamson(4), Fleming, Little, Farmer(2), Dean, Allen(5), Eggar(6), Barber(12), Lucas(7)

-----------------------------------------------

Blackhawks U14 Boys v Spelthorne Atoms 33 - 67
Surrey CVL

Despite being tired from their first game of the day against Sonics, Blackhawks were fired up for this one. Playing against their friend and ex-team mate Ryan Alexis, who "defected" to Spelthorne earlier in the season, was all the incentive they needed.

For the majority of the 1st quarter the 2 teams seemed evenly matched as the Blackhawks executed their plays well and finished cleanly. However in the last 2 mins, Atoms turned it on to score 10 points without reply and finish the period 14 -30 ahead. The second fives for each team were also well matched and the 2nd quarter finished very close with Blackhawks just edging it 9-8.

Being 15 points down at half-time did not prevent the Blackhawks from giving maximum effort in the second half, but the earlier tough game against Sonics was starting to take it's toll now, and Atoms slowly pulled away to take a commanding lead and finished the match strongly 67 - 33.

Many spectators thought the match was more even than the score suggested, and the young Hawks can take heart from this into their last 2 games on 27th April against Guildford Heat and Cobham.

Blackhawks: Morales, Jones, Adamson(4), Fleming(6), Little, Farmer(4), Dean, Allen(6), Eggar(4), Barber(3), Lucas(6)

2007/2008 Season

Too little, too late against a strong Cobham side
Blackhawks U14 Boys v Cobham 41 - 34
Bracknell CVL
 (14/3/08)

A game of two halves for the Blackhawks. Disastrous first half and great second half, but it was too little too late against a good all round Cobham side, who were far more accurate around the basket and tougher on defence.

That the Blackhawks didn't score their first points until half way through the second period tells you how far adrift they were at the start of this game. At half-time they were 6 - 19 down.

Coach Okorocha must have fired them up in the half-time talk as they finally woke up in the 3rd period and started to play their normal game. Captain Caspar Lucas scored all the points in this period and went on to be top-scorer with 17 points overall. Going into the final period Blackhawks were still 16 points down at 15-31.

The last quarter was a complete turn-around with the Blackhawks now hustling in defence and making use of the fast-break in Offence to dominate the period. They won the quarter by 9 points, but it was too late now and Cobham ran out deserved winners at 34-41.

MVP and Top Scorer: Caspar Lucas (30.5 MVP and 17 points with an 80% accuracy rate).

Q1:0-6 Q2:6-13 Q3:9-12 Q4:19-10

Blackhawks: Jones, Adamson(2), Little, Farmer, Allen, DiPaolo, Barber(8), Lucas(17)Andrews, Eggar(5), Morales, Fleming(2).

Solid defence tames tames the Wildcats...
Blackhawks U14 Boys v Kingston Wildcats 35 - 9
Bracknell CVL
 (01/02/08)

Having already beaten the Wildcats this season in the Surrey CVL, stand-in Coach Keith Farmer warned the U14 Blackhawks at the start not to be complacent.

He needn't have worried. Despite the Wildcats scoring the first basket in the game, a solid Blackhawks defence shot them out totally for the rest of the 1st quarter. Baskets of their own from Caspar Lucas, Blake Adamson and Tate Barber saw the young hawks 8 -2 ahead at the end of the first period.

The Woking 2nd five played the same tight game, but couldn't find the baskets themselves and a low-scoring quarter was won 3 -2 by Kingston, to narrow the Blackhawks lead to 5 at half time.

In the 3rd quarter, Wildcats were yet again shut out, with further baskets from Lucas and Adamson restoring a comfortable 13 point lead going into the last period.

Coach Farmer gave all his bench some court time in the 4th quarter and none of them let him down. The passing movements from training started to pay off, with James Allen, Ross Jones and Max Eggar on the scoring end of some good plays. Tate Barber rounded off a fine performance to sink a three-pointer in the last shot of the game to the cheers of the Blackhawks supporters.

The score-sheet incorrectly recorded the result as 30 - 9, but will be corrected to 35-9. (Kingston one player short and 3-pointer recorded as two points.

The much improved performance by the boys over recent games was reflected in the game stats, where they missed out on equalling the Club "least turnovers in a game record" by just one.

MVP and Top Scorer: Tate Barber (16.0 MVP and 9 points).

Q1:8-2 Q2:2-3 Q3:8-0 Q4:13-4

Blackhawks: Jones(2), Adamson(6), Little, Farmer, Allen(4), DiPaolo, Barber(9), Lucas(8), Eggar(2), Morales, Fleming.

Not a great performance, but still a win...
Blackhawks U14 Boys - Reading Rockets B 42 - 24
Surrey CVL
 (18-1-08)

Not a great team performance from the young u14 Blackhawk boys, but enough to still get a valuable win.

The victory never really looked in doubt and it takes them to 2 and 1 in the Bracknell Central Venue League. Plenty for Coach Okorocha to concentrate on in the weeks before their next game.

The final score was 42-24 to the Blackhawks but the margin of victory should have been a lot wider, with poor finishing under the basket, and lack of passing, the main problem.

MVP: Caspar Lucas with 14.3 MVP points, he scored 10 game points. Top scorer was Tate Barber with 14 game points

Q1:14-8 Q2:8-6 Q3:12-4 Q4:8-6

Blackhawks: Jones(2), Adamson(4), Little, Farmer, Allen(4), Dean, Barber(14), Lucas(10), Eggar(6), Andrews, Fleming(2)

Win one, lose one in double-header...
Blackhawks U14 Boys - Kingston Wildcats 64-43
Surrey CVL
 (13-01-08)

A good win for the U14 boys in their first match in a double-header on the day. Honours were quite even in the first quarter, with Blackhawks getting their points from Alex Dean, Tate Barber and Caspar Lucas to give them a narrow 2 point lead at the end of the period 10 - 8.

Blackhawks started the second quarter strongly, with Elliot Farmer driving to the basket twice in the first minute to grab a quick 4 points for his side. More points from Lee Fleming (his first game), James Allen and Morgan Little extended the Blackhawks lead to 10 points by half-time as they led 32-22.

The second half saw more of the same from whichever 5 players Coach Okorocha selected and his team increased the points to gap 21 at the end of the game to record a 64 - 43 victory over the Wildcats.

MVP: Elliot Farmer with 23.5 MVP points, he scored 12 points (50%) accuracy and was strong in defence. Lee Fleming in his debut game for the club was also in the honours with 21.0 MVP points and was joint top scorer with 14.

Q1: 10-8 Q2: 22-14 Q3: 18-11 Q4: 14-10

Blackhawks: Jones, Adamson, Little(2), Farmer(12), Allen(8), Dean(6), Barber(8), Lucas(14), Di Paola, Morales, Fleming(14)

-----------------------------------------------------

Blackhawks U14 Boys - Brentwood Fire 47-71
Surrey CVL
 (13-01-08)

A very different game against Brentwood Fire, who despite only having 6 players, had height, strength and probably age to their advantage. Blackhawks never got into their rhythm, and although they narrowly won the last quarter 13-12, were well out of the game by then. The final score was 47 - 70 to the Fire.

MVP was Blake Adamson with 16.5 MVP points. 60% field goal accuracy and 5 rebounds.

Q1:4-20 Q2:4-19 Q3:8-19 Q4:13-12. Blackhawks were awarded 20 extra points as Fire were short of players.

Blackhawks: Jones(1), Adamson(6), Little, Farmer, Allen(4), Dean(2), Barber(2), Lucas(6), Di Paola, Morales, Fleming(6)

Good show against strong TASIS...
Blackhawks U14 Boys - TASIS Royals 33-48
Surrey CVL
 (9-12-07)

After the massive victory against Epsom earlier in the morning, it was time to test themselves against some very tough opponents. The U14 Blackhawks did very well, but struggled to match the all round skill and aggression of the American school side.

An even first quarter, was followed by TASIS controlling quarters 2 and 3 and gaining a 27 point lead going in the final period.

To the Blackhawks credit they came back strongly in the 4th quarter to win it 16 - 4.  A loss by 15 points overall in this game but lessons have been learned ready for the next games in the New Year.

MVP was Max Eggar with 18.8 MVP points, thanks to 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists.

Blackhawks: Di Paola, Morales, Adamson(2), Eggar(6),     Little, Farmer, Allen(4), Dean(2), Barber(9), Lucas(10)

What a difference a day makes!...
Blackhawks U14 Boys - Epsom Rockets 72-15
Surrey CVL
 (9-12-07)

What a difference a day makes!  After the disappointing display on Friday night, Coach Okorocha put the boys through a hard training session on Saturday morning and they came out on this Sunday morning as a new team and totally demolished the unfortunate Epsom Rockets.

Leading from the start, baskets by Lucas, Barber and Farmer gave them a 24-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw a different 5 come of the Blackhawks Bench and score 18 points without any reply from Rockets. Adamson, Allen and Eggar doing all the damage between them.

Being 39 points up at half-time allowed the starting five to return to Court without any pressure, and although to Rockets credit they did not give up, the lead was extended by another 8 points going into the final period.

Max Eggar found the basket in the 4th quarter and scored 8 points to give his team a massive victory by 57 points.

MVP was Caspar Lucas with an outstanding 45 MVP points. He was also top-scorer with 22 points and a 77% Field Goal accuracy. Also in the honours was Tate Barber with a great 32.0 MVP points.

Blackhawks: Di Paola, Morales, Adamson(8), Eggar(10),    Little(2), Farmer(4), Allen(8), Dean(4), Barber(14), Lucas(22).

Girls make boys nervous?...
Blackhawks U14 Boys - Reading u16 girls 29-46
Heat CVL
 (7-12-07)

Another very nervous display by the Blackhawk Under 14 boys as they failed to engage against a skilful Reading Girls side who dominated the game. A late comeback by the Blackhawks in the 3rd quarter was soon squashed early in the 4th period as Reading ran our easy winners. Much to do for the young Hawks as they still fail to translate hard work in training to teamwork and co-ordination on the court.

MVP - Caspar Lucas was MVP with 26.0 MVP points, earning himself a Bronze award. He scored 13 points, got 5 steals and 2 assists.

Blackhawks: Andrews, Jones, Adamson(2), Eggar, Little, Farmer, Allen, Dean(2), Barber(8), Lucas(13).

Close call in a shaky start to the season...

Blackhawks U14 Boys - Spelthorne B 26-25
Heat CVL
 (16-Nov-07)

A nervous and jittery start for the Blackhawk u14 boys as they seemed to forget all their good work in pre-season training and revert back to individual play instead of structured team-work. Teams win leagues not individual players is what they were missing in this game!

Both teams were much the same though and a low-scoring first quarter ended with Spelthorne just one point ahead at 5-4.

The 2nd quarter was much better for the Blackhawks, with Max Eggar (in perhaps his first and last game) scoring 10 of the 12 points for the Woking team to put them 16-13 ahead at half-time.

Neither side made much headway in Q3, with only James Allen for the Blackhawks scoring in open play to just edge it 4-0.

The stage was set for a tense last period with Blackhawks 7 points ahead, but no Spelthorne side is ever going to give up without a fight. Within 5 minutes of the quarter, they had pulled it back to a one point game, and the Blackhawks were all over the place. Coach Okorocha called a much needed time-out to steady his team, but they were on team fouls now and that gave the advantage to Spelthorne from the free-throw line.  Fortunately for the Woking Side, Spelthorne converted only 2 out of 5 from the line, and with a crucial basket for the Blackhawks from Caspar Lucas, they held on in the remaining few seconds for a one-point victory.

Their supporters breathed a huge sigh of relief, and now hope the teams nerves are out of the way before the next match. Coach Okorocha  has a lot to work on over the next few weeks.

MVP was James Allen with 10.8 MVP points. Top Scorer was Max Eggar with 12 points.

Blackhawks: Jeeves, Andrews, Jones, Adamson(2), Eggar(12),
Little, Farmer, Allen(4), Dean, Barber(3), Lucas(5).

Blackhawks dominate against the Heat...
Blackhawks U14 - Guildford Heat 79-48
SCVL
 (01-Apr-07)

Despite a sticky patch in the second half, Blackhawks dominated this bottom of the table clash and were impressive winners in the end.

In qtrs 1 and 2, Blackhawks were far too strong for the Heat and strolled quite comfortably to a half time lead of 36 - 14.

To their credit, Guildford never gave up and attacked the Blackhawks straight from the start in the 2nd half and at one point had reduced the Blackhawks lead to just 5 points. This seemed to waken the Woking side and they once again took control of the game to cruise home by a comfortable margin.  Pete Legg was in impressive form and aided by Tom Gamble Blackhawks never really looked like losing this bottom of the table clash. Ryan Gardener was a constant threat to the Heat as they racked up the fouls in an attempt to stop him.

Coach Emeka Okorocha was pleased to see his young side finish the season in fine form and with a good win against the local rivals.

Q1: 20-6 Q2: 16-8  2nd half: 43-34

MVP: Pete Legg with an amazing 79.0 MVP points! From a Field Goal percentage of 68% providing 39 points, 17 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

Good performances also from Tom Gamble with 29.5 MVP points, Tate Barber (17), Ryan Gardener (17) and Siddarth Anand (15).

Blackhawks: Ryan Gardener(6), Elliot Farmer(3), Pete Legg(39), Caspar Lucas(4), Tate Barber(9), Siddarth Anand(6), Tom O'Carroll, David Mitchell(2), Tom Gamble(10).

A real game of two halves...
Blackhawks U14 - Maidstone Warriors 54-59
SCVL
 (18-03-07)

If ever there was a game that matched up to the old cliché of a game of two halves, then this was it. Woking were totally outplayed in the first 2 quarters and were losing 3 - 26 at half-time. Then Pete Legg turned up...

Pete's arrival sparked a miraculous team revival and the Blackhawks really took control of the game.  They just ran out of time though and despite winning the last period by 16 points, it was just not enough overall.

Coach Okorocha has chosen Caspar Lucas as MVP for the game, saying... "he (Caspar) scored the only points of the 1st half and dominated during the second too".

Q1: 3-14 Q2: 0-12  2nd half: 49-33

MVP: Caspar Lucas

Blackhawks: Ryan Gardener, Ryan Alexis, Alex Dean, Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer, Ross Jones, Pete Legg(22), Caspar Lucas(11), Tate Barber(6), Siddarth Anand, Tom O'Carroll, Karim Hadeq(10)

Blackhawks found lacking...
Blackhawks U14 - Cobham 22-37
BCVL
 (16-03-07)

Despite the pre-match ambition and determination of spirit, the u14 boys failed to transfer it onto the court and looked  lack lustre against a polished Cobham side who were strong in every department.

This result means that the Blackhawks finish 3rd in the Bracknell league behind Kingston and Cobham. A very creditable position given the young age profile of the team, and all to play for next season.

Pete Legg and Karim Hadeq gave the best performances.

Q1: 6-6 Q2: 1-15  Q3: 2-5 Q4: 13-11

MVP: Pete Legg

Blackhawks: Ryan Gardener, Ryan Alexis(2), Alex Dean, Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer, Ross Jones, Pete Legg(12), Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber, Marcos Zakakiotis, Tom Gamble(4), Karim Hadeq(4)

Great Performance lifts team spirits, but not enough against Lanfranc...
Blackhawks U14 - HSC Lanfranc 47-69
SCVL playoff
 (04-03-07)

Blackhawks U14 Boys put on what many spectators were calling their best team performance of the season against a strong, mature Lanfranc side, but in the end the young Hawks couldn't match the all-round strength of the Croydon team who have several London Towers players at their disposal this season.

Reduced to 9 players through illness and absences, Woking Coach, Emeka Okoracha, had to re-shuffle his game plan and lift the young players he had left. The pre-match talk did the trick and the Hawks showed great determination throughout the game against the physically matured Lanfranc.

Straight from the start Blackhawks showed Lanfranc that they were not in for an easy game and ended the 1st qtr stronger to pull the score back to 6-14.

The 2nd quarter was arguably the best period of the game for the Blackhawks as they upped the pressure on Lanfranc. Pete Legg was winning rebounds at both ends of the court and the defensive effort was typified by Elliot Farmer who chased and harried for every ball. Woking won the quarter by 2 points (8-10) to reduce the half-time gap to just 6 points.

Lanfranc Coach, Kevin Hibbs, must have had strong words with his team during the break, as they came out for second half at incredible pace and took the Blackhawks by surprise putting 8 points on the board without reply.

Pete Legg rallied Woking somewhat with 8 points of his own, including a great 3-pointer, but Lanfranc were in top gear now and quickly put pay to any Blackhawks revival thoughts with 9 points in 2 minutes to kill the game off with a 22 point lead.

Woking never gave up and matched Lanfranc point for point for the remaining 9 minutes of the games, but the damage had been done and they could not get the upper hand.

Every Blackhawks player put in a tremendous performance that they can be proud of, and their spirits are now high for the next big game against Cobham at Bracknell in 2 weeks time.

No stats were taken today, but MVP must go to Pete Legg who scored 25 points and won a fantastic number of rebounds at both ends of the court.

Woking now meet Maidstone on 18th March in the next round of the Surrey CVL playoffs.

Q1: 6-14 Q2: 10-8  2nd half: 31-47

MVP: Pete Legg

Blackhawks: Ryan Gardener(6), Ryan Alexis(4), Alex Dean(2), Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer(2), Ross Jones, Pete Legg(25), Caspar Lucas(4), Tate Barber(4),

2nd qtr mauling by Wildcats...
Blackhawks U14 - Kingston Wildcats 43-58
SCVL
 (11-02-07)

Despite a close 1st qtr and winning the second half by 6 points, Blackhawks couldn't repair the damage done by Kingston in a disastrous 2nd qtr.

The  stats show that Woking only conceded 4 turnovers in the whole match and this is clear evidence that they actually put in a good performance. The difference between the teams was shooting accuracy and a bit of luck. Everything that Kingston put up to the basket seemed to drop in, but not so for Blackhawks.

Pete Legg and Tom Gamble were and awesome partnership for the Blackhawks, scoring all but 3 of their teams points between them, to both earn MVP awards.

Q1: 13-16 Q2: 1-19  2nd half: 29-23

MVP: Pete Legg (52.0), Tom Gamble (35.5)

Blackhawks: Ryan Gardener(1), Ryan Alexis, Alex Dean, Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer(2), Ross Jones, Pete Legg(22), Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber, Tom Gamble(18)

Blackhawks clipped by Warriors...

In their second game of the day the Blackhawks were more evenly matched against Warriors and this resulted in a fine entertaining display by both sides.

Woking won the first quarter and the complete second half but could not quite pull back the deficit from quarter two in a game that was close right to the end.

Q1: 9-7 Q2: 8-17  2nd half: 26-22

MVP: Pete Legg (26.5 MVP)

Blackhawks see standard to aspire to...
Blackhawks U14 - Brentwood Fire  20-68
SCVL
 (04-02-07)

Against top of the league side Brentwood Fire the Blackhawks saw the standard they should aspire to in the future. Whether it is correct for Brentwood to play National league players in a local development league has arguments both ways. It is certainly not in the spirit of the league to humiliate the opposition, but on the flip-side it does show players what can be achieved.

A tight aggressive defence and ruthless finishing in offence is certainly the recipe for winning basketball matches and Brentwood displayed both.

Q1: 6-23 Q2: 2-16  2nd half: 12-31

MVP: Pete Legg (24.3 MVP) another very impressive performance with 11 rebounds, 5 blocks and 14 points.

Blackhawks: Blake Adamson, Ryan Gardener(2), Ryan Alexis, Alex Dean(2), Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer, Ross Jones, Pete Legg(14), Karim Hadeq, Caspar Lucas(2), Tate Barber

Blackhawks lose unbeaten record...
Blackhawks U14 - Kingston  30-32
BCVL
 (26-01-07)

A game between two unbeaten sides at the top of the league is always going to be a tight contest. So it was in this match as the lead changed constantly with only a few points dividing the teams throughout. Unluckily for Woking  it was  Kingston that were 2 points up at the final whistle.

The Blackhawks starting five of Pete Legg, Tom Gamble, Karim Hadeq, Caspar Lucas and Ryan Alexis did their job well to win the 1st quarter 10-6.

In the second Quarter it was Kingston who were the stronger side, with Alex Dean, David Mitchell, Ryan Gardener, Jack Sutherland and Kyle Adamson being unable to make any impression for Woking. Kingston won the period 2-10 to make the half-time score 12-16.

With the starting 5 back on court for Woking after the break they had their best spell of the game. A superb tight defence providing the springboard for rapid offence  plays and they won the quarter 7-0 to take the overall lead again at 19-16 going into the final period.

The game was lost for Woking in the final period as field goal accuracy let them down and allowed Kingston to regain the upper hand. This was an exiting game for Blackhawks supporters who saw their team play some of their best basketball of the season.

Newcomer Kyle Adamson showed great promise and earned himself 3rd MVP with 10.2 points.

Q1:10-6 Q2: 2-10 Q3: 7-0 Q4: 11-16

MVP: Pete Legg (37.5 MVP) another very impressive performance with 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 blocks and 14 points.

Blackhawks hold on for vital win...
Blackhawks U14 - Reading U16 Girls  22-20
BCVL
 (05-01-07)

Having opened up a comfortable 11 point gap by the end of Qtr1, the U14 boys let it slip in Qtrs 2 and 3 to allow Reading Rocket U16 girls to pull level 15-15 by the start of the last qtr.

In a tense, exciting final period Blackhawks went into a 2 point lead with just 16 seconds left on the clock and held on in the dying seconds for a hard-fought victory that sees them remain unbeaten in the Bracknell League.

Q1:12-1, Q2:1-7, Q3:2-7, Q4:7-5

MVP: Pete Legg (28.0) 15 rebounds and 10 points. Good performance also from Tom Gamble (14.5) with 9 points scored.

Blackhawks: Siddarth Anand, Ryan Gardener, Ryan Alexis(2), Tate Barber, Alex Dean(1), Jack Sutherland, Elliot Farmer, David Mitchell, Tom Gamble(9), Pete Legg(10), Karim Hadeq

Very disappointing...
Blackhawks U14 - The Rush  18-16
Friendly
 (15-12-06)

After a great performance in their last match, you would have expected the U14 Blackhawks to have won this friendly  with ease and style. But this was the most disappointing, almost embarrassing, performance from a Blackhawks team this season.

Maybe the end of a long school term, or the thought of Christmas to come, dulled the players passion for this game, but against a Rush team who have had no previous match experience this should have been the chance for players to impress Coach Okorocha prior to the start of the second-half of the season.

The stats provide the evidence for this view, with only 32 MVP points being scored in total by the whole team. Only MVP Ryan Gardener reached double figures with a creditable performamce to earn himself 13.5 points.

The period scores below also paint the picture, with inspiration coming from somewhere in Q4 for the Blackhawks to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Some would say it wasn't deserved.

Q1:4-6, Q2:0-2, Q3:2-4, Q4:12-4

MVP: Ryan Gardener(13.5)

Blackhawks: Siddarth Anand(2), Ryan Gardener(6), Ryan Alexis, Caspar Lucas(2), Tate Barber(6), Alex Dean(2), Jack Sutherland, Charlie Copp, Tom O'Connell, Elliot Farmer, David Mitchell

Comfortable win to go top of the league!
Blackhawks U14 - Spelthorne B  35-16
BCVL
 (08-12-06)

Another comfortable win for the U14 boys that takes them to the top of the U14B Bracknell league with 3 wins out of 3.

At last the U14 Blackhawks have started to play as a team rather than a group of individuals, and the difference was obvious to all. The game stats back this view up with a more even spread of points across the players than usual. However... they will have more difficult sides than Spelthorne B to play against in the second half of the season and still need to work on their teamwork.

Led by the ever-improving and maturing Ryan Alexis, the Blackhawks looked comfortable from the start and strolled rather than sprinted into a 8-4 lead by the end of Qtr1.

The second 5 had different ideas though and put on a powerful performance to win the qtr 11-0, giving their side a commanding 15 point lead at half-time.

Q3 was won comfortably 10-2, and despite a spirited fightback from Spelthorne in Q4, the game was already won for Woking.

Q1:8-4, Q2:11-0, Q3:10-2, Q4:10-6

MVP: Pete Legg(20.5), closely followed by Karim Hadeq on (20.0)

Blackhawks: Siddarth Anand(4), Ryan Alexis(2), Caspar Lucas(2), Tate Barber(6), Alex Dean(2), Pete Legg(4), Karim Hadeq(8), Tom Gamble(4), Elliot Farmer(3), Ross Jones.

Comfortable win, but still more to do...
Blackhawks U14 - Camberley 50-13
BCVL
 (24-11-06)

The score-line would lead you to believe that this was a convincing win, and so it was, but it could have even so much more.
Against a young, inexperienced Camberley team this should have been the opportunity for the Blackhawks to really turn it on and impress the crowd with their passing game. Instead individual players did enough to seal a comfortable win.

It's not all negative though, with field goal accuracy up to an overall 46% and 31 rebounds won.

MVP: Pete Legg (31.0) with 11 rebounds and 14 points from a 75% accuracy.
Good performance also from Siddarth Anand with 7 rebounds and 6 points to earn 16.0 mvp points.

Blackhawks: David Mitchell(2), Siddarth Anand(6), Ryan Alexis(4), Caspar Lucas(2), Tate Barber(9), Ryan Gardener, Alex Dean, Pete Legg(14), Karim Hadeq(8), Tom Gamble(5), Ross Jones.

Least said the better...
Blackhawks U14 - Cobham 23-43
SCVL
 (19-11-06)

A mediocre performance from the Blackhawks that saw them lose by 20 points. Lets hope they do better in the next game.

Blackhawks: Elliot Farmer, Siddarth Anand, Ryan Alexis, Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber, Ryan Gardener, Alex Dean, Pete Legg, Karim Hadeq, Jack Sutherland, Ross Jones.
Too little too late...
Blackhawks U14 - Lanfranc 33-54
SCVL
 (5-11-06)

With Towers not competing in the Surrey CVL at U14 this year, Lanfranc were able to call upon their players who are also pupils at the school to line up for them.
This is not however enough to explain a lack lustre first half performance from the Blackhawks who trailed 32-8 at half-time.

Coach Okorocha must have said the right things during the break as Woking won the second half 25-22, but the damage had already been done.

MVP: Pete Legg (23.7) 15 rebounds, 2 assists.

Top Scorer: Karim Hadeq with 15 points including one 3-pointer.

Blackhawks: Elliot Farmer, Siddarth Anand, Ryan Alexis(7), Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber(2), Ryan Gardener, Alex Dean, Pete Legg(8), Karim Hadeq(15), Jack Sutherland(2).

Cool victory over the Heat...
Blackhawks U14 - Guildford Heat 52-19
SCVL
 (22-Oct-06)

This was a very convincing win against local rivals Guildford Heat and a first victory in the Surrey Central Venue League for the Blackhawks, having lost to Sunbury the previous week.

Coach Okorocha changed his tactics and used a different starting five for this game, but Barber, Lucas, Gardener, Dean and Anand worked well to win the first quarter 6-2.

Q2 saw the more familiar starting four of Alexis, Mitchell, Gamble and Legg on court, with the addition of Hadeq playing his first League game.  They really turned it from the start and scored 17 (10 from Gamble) without reply, with Hadeq rounding off the period with a superb 3-pointer, to give the Hawks a 23-2 lead at half time.

Coach Okorocha mixed it up in the second half, giving 11th man Farmer a short spell on court and he also proved his worth in the team, to give Coach a difficult (but nice!) problem of team selection for future games as his squad starts to come together nicely.

To Guildford's credit, they are a new, young side that will gain experience from these games, and they never gave up keeping Blackhawks to a 29-17 victory in the second half period.

q1: 6-2, q2:17-0, 2nd half: 29-17

MVP: Pete Legg (27.5) 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 bonus.

Blackhawks: David Mitchell(2), Tom Gamble(16), Elliot Farmer, Siddarth Anand(4), Ryan Alexis(6), Caspar Lucas(2), Tate Barber(2), Ryan Gardener, Alex Dean(2), Pete Legg(12), Karim Hadeq(6)

Little impression against well drilled Sonics...
Blackhawks U14 - Sunbury Sonics 37-48
SCVL
 (15-Oct-06)

Despite a promising start, the well-drilled and physically bigger Sonics provided the toughest test yet for this young Blackhawks side and in the end were just too strong.

Shared honours in the first 2 quarters meant that their were only 2 points in it at half-time, but Sonics were more consistent and well organised in the second half.

Poor rebounding and a low field goal percentage tell the rest of the story, but good experience to take into the next match.

q1: 12-6, q2:2-11, 2nd half: 23-31

MVP: Pete Legg with a 26.3 MVP points from 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 16 points.

Blackhawks: Ross Jones, Elliot Farmer(2), Siddarth Anand(2), Ryan Alexis(10), Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber(5), Ryan Gardener(2), Alex Dean, Pete Legg(16),Jack Sutherland, Alistair Koh.

Nervous start - but still a win!
Blackhawks U14 - Bracknell Girls 35-30
BCVL
 (13-Oct-06)

The young U14 start started their campaign at Bracknell with a win, but they seemed to lack the confidence that had been evident in their previous match. But, this was against an U16 Girls team that had some taller and more physical players, and Bracknell is not always an easy place to play.

After winning the first quarter 8-4, the Blackhawks second five failed to score any points in quarter two and subsequently were down 8-12 at half time. In Q3 the defence was tighter and David Mitchell was in fine scoring form on the break for Blackhawks to reclaim the lead 21-18 going into the last.

In Q4 the honours were pretty even between the 2 sides and Woking claimed their first win in League competition this season.

q1: 8-4, q2:0-8, q3:13-6, q4:14-12

MVP: David Mitchell with a 21.0 MVP points from 3 steals and 12 points thanks to an impressive 86% field goal percentage.

Blackhawks: Ross Jones, David Mitchell(12), Tom Gamble(4), Elliot Farmer, Siddarth Anand(4), Ryan Alexis(6), Caspar Lucas, Tate Barber(2), Ryan Gardener(2), Alex Dean, Pete Legg(5).

What a great start!
Blackhawks U14 - Camberley 78 -24
Friendly
 (08-Oct-06)

The coaching and fitness training during the summer seems to have paid off, as the U14 Blackhawks easily demolished the newly formed Camberley team with a good all round performance. This was the first game of the season for the new U14 squad and Coach Okorocha can be pleased by the way this young side is starting to come together.

q1: 21-6, q2:11-8, q3:24-2, q4:22-8

MVP: Pete Legg, with a fantastic 48.5 MVP points from 9 rebounds, 5 steals, and 27 points thanks to an impressive 72% shooting percentage.

Good performances also from David Mitchell(18.5 MVP) and Ryan Alexis(17.0)

More match details to follow.

Blackhawks: Ross Jones, David Mitchell(8), Tom Gamble(9), Elliot Farmer, Jack Sutherland(2), Ryan Alexis(6), Caspar Lucas(6), Tate Barber(6), Ryan Gardener(6), Alex Dean(6), Karim Hadeq(2), Pete Legg(27).

Easy friendly to end the season on a high
Blackhawks U14 - Camberley Slammers  65-25
 (20-May-06)

The Slammers started bright and bushy-tailed but soon the experienced Blackhawks took over and imposed their game to finish comfortable winners.

Francis Long coached the first half and Emeka Okarocha coached the second half.

1st half: 39-11;     2nd half: 26-14;

Top scorers were Chris Hatto (14), Roshan Saund (12) and Charlie Butler (11).

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (6), A Taylor, E Lewry (4),  C Butler (11), C Hatto (14), D  Marshall (4), L Msipha, E Farmer (2), R Gardener (2), R Saund (12), A Dean (2), C Jones (4).

BIG THANK YOU TO FRANCIS

How can you ever forget to thank your right-hand man? Quite easily really... It's because he has been so close to you throughout the season that it feels like he is your own son - and yes, you do forget to thank your family sometimes because you take them for granted, don't you?

Francis has been the Assistant Coach for the under-14s this season and rarely missed a practice or a game. In fact, even when he was out in Snowdonia doing with his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, he was texting me 10 minutes after the game with Brentwood Fire asking how the lads did.

His commitment to the Club has been phenomenal and we will miss him hugely next year when he goes out to South Africa to spend ten months helping children in deprived areas and introducing them to the sport he loves.

Francis - we love you and wish you all the best with everything you do next season. See you back in July 2007!

Another David and Goliath affair...
Blackhawks U14 - London Towers  35-74
 (30-Apr-06)

It was always going to be a challenge. Especially when the opposition have at their disposal four players that are taller than your tallest player, no matter how good your positioning under the baskets may be, they will reach over you, grab the ball and have enough goes at your basket until they score.

Despite those physical differences, the Blackhawks came out determined to give Towers a game. They fought for every loose ball, won more rebounds than the laws of Physics should have ever allowed and scored baskets against ridiculous odds. Take also into account the psychological impact of such an occasion and the fact that the Towers were not only big and strong but very well drilled too, it was no surprise that they were the clear winners.

Still, when one looks back to the beginning of the season and how the team has evolved and developed, one can only stand in awe of what these young hawks have achieved.  Winning games against the likes of Kingston and Fire is not something that just happens - we MADE it happen!

Well done guys - we are hugely proud of you all.

Q1: 08-19;    Q2: 13-20;    2nd Half: 14-35

MVP was Kris Obaseki with 12 points, 4 blocks and 4 steals.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (12), A Taylor (2), E Lewry (4),  C Butler, C Hatto (2), D  Marshall (2), C McAuliffe, E Ainsbury (5), R Gardener, R Saund (4), J Cerrutti (2), C Jones (2).

Fire extinguished!...
Blackhawks U14 - Brentwood Fire  52-44
 (09-Apr-06)

For any chance of the final, the Hawks knew that only a victory would suffice.  Up by 5 points (15-10) after the first quarter, Brentwood maintained control in the second quarter only allowing the Hawks to score a further 4 and extending their margin to 16 points at the half with a score of 30-14.

Problems for the young hawks continued early into the second half with Hatto  fouled-out and Fire's margin extended to 17!  Coach Obaseki called a decisive time out to steady the team. With instructions to move the hands, bend the knees, play their own game and try to reduce the margin to 10, the Hawks returned to the game and their response was immediate. After 10 minutes further play the Hawks had exceeded their Coach's expectations and were tying the game 39 all. Kris Obaseki and Ahmad Taylor peppered the hoop while Ed Lewry claimed just about every rebound going. Butler, Marshall and McAuliffe provided the essential support.

With their confidence regained and to the noisy support from behind their bench, the final whistle found the Blackhawks 52-44 winners with the prize of a final play-off against the Towers on the 30th of April. Superb!

Q1: 10-15;   Q2: 4-15;   2nd Half: 38-14

MVPs were the sensational Ahmad Taylor (35.5), Kris Obaseki (30.8) and Edmund Lewry (21.0).

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (16), A Taylor (21), E Lewry (7),  C Butler (2), C Hatto (4), D  Marshall (2), C McAuliffe, E Ainsbury, Q Coulter, P Legg.

Win one and lose one...
Blackhawks u14 - Maidstone  78-39 (02-Apr-06)

This was a game the Blackhawks knew they could win and they did – but only after getting into their stride in the second half.

The 1st quarter was won by 6, with the biggest cheer coming from the loyal band of supporters with Ryan Gardener sinking his first basket of the season. The 2nd quarter was lost by 3 points leaving the Blackhawks with just a small advantage at half time.

In the second half the team settled down into their game and were able to take control - with Maidstone No5 being fouled out their options became limited. The Hawks won the period with Chris McAuliffe sinking the final hoop as the horn sounded giving a comfortable victory.

 Q1: 12-6; Q2: 6-9; 2nd Half 55-24

MVP Kris Obaseki (31.5), Edmund Lewry (27.5)

 Blackhawks: K Obaseki (16),  A. Taylor(11),  C. Jones(11),  C.McAuliffe(10),  C.Butler (6),  D. Marshall(5),  R. Gardener(2) E.Lewry(8),  C. Hatto(4), Q Coulter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Blackhawks u14 - London Towers 44-75 (02-Apr-06)

As ever, any game against the Towers is expected to be tough, and this was no exception.

In Q1 the first five kept the margin to 10 points despite having to substitute Kris after a clash of heads with his team mate Edmund.

The second five found the going tougher with the Towers taking control and only conceding 4 points – for the second time in the morning Dan Marshall had a basket disallowed after being fouled and the official not playing the advantage.

In the second half Coach Obaseki found greater depths in the team to produce a fine performance with the Hawks scoring a further 29 points (Ahmad Taylor slotting in 2 out of 3 three pointers) and only losing the half by 6.

The squad now face their last regular game of the season against Brentwood Fire next Sunday 9th April at Chessington.

  Go Blackhawks!!

 Q1: 6-16; Q2: 4-23; 2nd Half 29-36

MVP: Ahmad Taylor (20.8)

 Blackhawks: A. Taylor(14), K. Obaseki (6), C. Hatto(6), Jones (5) E. Lewry(4),  D. Marshall (2),  C. Butler (2), Q. Coulter,  C.McAuliffe, R Gardener.

All well and good until the last minute
Blackhawks u14 - Spelthorne  33-38  (24-Mar-06)

Now this was a game that had pretty much everything and a game the Blackhawks could have won.

The first two quarters was the usual cat-and-mouse routine between the two coaches where the one tries to outfox the other with player combinations to gain some advantage before the real game in the second half. As it happened, the half finished 11-11 with Obaseki and Hatto scoring all of Woking's points.

In the second half, Kris Obaseki and Ahmad Taylor set the place alight with 5 sizzling 3-pointers between them but the occasion got to some of the young hawks who missed some easy shots from under the basket at critical moments in the dying minutes.

This was a very credible display by the Woking u14 boys who at the beginning of the season would have considered such a performance way beyond their capabilities.

Q1: 3-6;   Q2: 8-5;   Q3: 12-12;   Q4: 10-15

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (9), C Hatto (10), D Marshall, E Lewry, A Taylor (10), E Ainsbury, J Cerutti, C Jones (4), C McAuliffe, C Butler.

Good basketball, bad result...
Blackhawks u14 - Bracknell  31-41  (17-Mar-06)

The basketball was good but the opposition was bigger and stronger (surprise, surprise...) and losing Taylor with 5 fouls early in Q3 did not help either.

Despite all that, the young hawks managed to put in a good performance, played some good offences and defended as well as they could for their size and age. Once again, it's no surprise that we only pulled down 14 rebounds in total.

Kris Obaseki was closely guarded throughout the game but still managed to score 14 points. Roshan Saund put in a reasonable performance but didn't receive as much service as he would have liked.

Following the two defeats in the play-offs there is little chance of going through to the final but it has been a good season at the Bracknell CVL considering there were only eight players in the u14 squad at the beginning of the season.

Q1: 4-2;   Q2: 3-13;   Q3: 8-11;   Q4: 16-15

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (14), R Saund (5), R Gardener, D Marshall, E Lewry (3), A Taylor (1), E Ainsbury (2), J Cerutti (2), C Jones (4), C McAuliffe.

Where grit is worth more than skill
Blackhawks u14 - Sonics  61-17  (12-Mar-06)

An unacceptable pattern is beginning to emerge at the Surrey CVL where one incompetent referee is the order of the day instead of two competent ones. For the second week running what should have been a skillful and enjoyable game of basketball deteriorated into something bordering a brawl because the referee would not call obvious and blatant fouls despite repeated warnings from the Blackhawks coach.

Despite all that, the young hawks managed to put in a solid performance during which they outclassed their opponents in just about every department.

Kris Obaseki started quietly but it all clicked into place in the second half when he realised that the referee was not going to call the obvious fouls. Kris steeled himself and with 7 rebounds, 6 steels and 24 points led the charge ably assisted by the rest of the squad. Dan Marshall and Roshan Saund had to withdraw with injuries to the eye and arm.

A good win for Woking who now need to put all their efforts into winning their next game against Brentwood Fire for a place in the final.

Q1: 10-02;   Q2: 12-01;   2nd half: 36-14

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (24), R Saund (2), C Butler, R Gardener, D Marshall (2), E Lewry (2), A Taylor (6), C Hatto (14), J Cerutti (5), C Jones (6).

A lesson in how to make it difficult for yourself
Blackhawks u14 - 7 Oaks  58-51  (5-Mar-06)

Let's not talk about the shocking refereeing, shall we?

Let's talk about how a team can take a 10-point advantage and turn it into a 9-point deficit in just one quarter. The good point out of this is that while coach Rakitzis tried his best to correct a situation largely created by himself, it was entertaining to watch how the opposition got mauled by Chris Hatto whilst they tried their best to keep Kris Obaseki quiet!

The Blackhawks hot new prospect scored 20 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and managed 6 steals in a game so physical, it bordered a brawl.

How exactly our smaller players managed not only to survive on the court against their bigger and faster opponents but eventually beat them, would make a good case study! Well done to those of you so brave.

This win keeps the pressure on Kingston and should the young hawks beat the Sonics and Fire on the 12th, they would be in with a shout for the final.

Q1: 10-0;   Q2: 18-0;   Q3: 8-2;   Q4: 22-0

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (8), R Saund (6), C Butler, R Gardener, D Marshall, E Lewry (9), S Anand, A Taylor (11), E Ainsbury (2), C Hatto (20), Q Coulter (2).

The Wildcats take their turn at Bracknell
Blackhawks u14 - Kingston Wildcats 23-46  (3-Mar-06)

There was little the depleted Blackhawks could do to stop the talented Wildcats on Friday evening at Bracknell as the first game of the play-offs ends in defeat.

Kris Obaseki and Ahmad Taylor tried their best to get their team-mates going but it was simply too much to ask as some lacked the experience and the skill to match the hungry and physical Wildcats.

A forgettable game if it wasn't for the sending off of the Blackhawks assistant coach before half-time for decent.

Even though this defeat diminishes our hopes to get into the final, we are sure the young hawks will do their best in the next games against Bracknell and Spelthorne on the 17th and 24th of March.

Q1: 04-06;   Q2: 04-13;   Q3: 05-08;   Q4: 10-19

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (12), R Saund (2), C Butler, R Gardener, D Marshall, E Lewry, S Anand, A Taylor (7), E Ainsbury (2), L Msipha.

Just a Stroll on the Court and We're in the Play-offs
Blackhawks u14 - Hart  58-02  (24-Feb-06)

The young hawks were warned about complacency as being, potentially, their worst enemy and they responded magnificently.
Although Hart had the height advantage they did not have the ammunition with which to shoot at the Blackhawks who picked their prey at will.

This game gave coach Long the opportunity to give all his players much needed court time and most took advantage of it and posted some good stats.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki (91% field goal success rate and 37.5 MVP points), Dan Marshall who seems to be growing in stature with every game and Ahmad Taylor who barely came out of second gear and still posted 6 assists and 6 steals.

This win propels the Blackhawks into 4th place in the Bracknell Central Venue League and into the play-offs. Good luck boys!

Q1: 10-0;   Q2: 18-0;   Q3: 8-2;   Q4: 22-0

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (20), R Saund (10), C Butler, R Gardener, D Marshall (12), E Lewry (6), C McAuliffe (4), J Cerutti, C Jones (4), A Taylor (2).

Important Win But Nothing Much to Crow About
Woking Blackhawks - Collingwood 21-08  (27-Jan-06)

Even though this was an important game for the hawks if they were serious about  a place in the play-offs, the team performance left a lot to be desired.
Marshall, Cerutti, Obaseki, Msipha and Saund found it difficult to impose their game in Q1, winning it narrowly 7-6. All 7 points were scored by Kris Obaseki mainly through individual efforts and all 6 points for Collingwood were scored by the talented Harvell.
The second quarter will be remembered by the plethora of missed shots and lack of determination to attack the baskets. Ahmad Taylor scored the only basket in this quarter, saving both teams from an even more embarrassing nil-nil score.
In the third quarter, the defensive play improved but offensively neither teams were able to find any rhythm. However, the Blackhawks managed to win it 5-0 and widen the gap to a more comfortable 14-6 score.
Little changed in the fourth quarter but the hawks were now dominating and cruised to a 21-8 win, which puts them in contention for the fourth place and the right to participate in the play-offs.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki who scored 12 points and collected 20.5 MVP points and Ahmad Taylor with 15 MVP points.
Coach Francis Long was given a technical foul for descent.
Some controversial calls and no-calls from umpire G Goodman and although referee Mark Ennis was excellent, Woking felt he could have had a friendlier chat with coach Long before awarding a technical.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (12), R Saund, L Msipha, C Butler (2), A Taylor (7), D Marshall, E Lewry, C McAuliffe, J Cerutti, R Gardner.

Hawks and Wildcats scrap it out but hawks get their pray!
Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Wildcats 53-48  (15-Jan-06)

If excitement was what you were after on this cloudy Sunday morning, you could not do better than be at the Chessington Sports Centre to witness the young Blackhawks' finest hour!
A fairly strong first five did the job in Q1 finishing off at 14-4. But coaches Rakitzis and Long knew that Kingston were plotting... They chose to put out their better five in Q2 and clawed their way back to win the first half 21-20.
That set the scene for the most exciting second half the u14s have had all season. Individual performances resulted in 28 rebounds and 18 steals but it was not until the young hawks clicked as a team that the sparks started flying.
Kingston were studded with talented players but Woking kept driving and loading them with fouls. It was not until the very last 90 seconds that this strategy paid off.
Led by the 12-year old Obaseki, Taylor and Lewry, the Blackhawks stole our hearts with a gutsy display we will all be proud of.  Grit, discipline and focus were the ingredients that contributed to a win that seemed impossible against the bigger and stronger wildcats.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki who scored 14 points and collected 26.5 MVP points, Chris Alexis (25.5 MVP points), Ahmad Taylor and Edmund Lewry.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (14), R Saund (1), L Msipha, C Butler, D Marshall (2), E Lewry (6), A Taylor, E Ainsbury, C McAuliffe, J Cerutti (2), A Abraham (2), C Alexis (11).

Hawks settle 1st round score with easy victory
Woking Blackhawks - Epsom Rockets  50-27  (15-Jan-06)

And then there was Roshan... Judging by his performance in the game against Kingston an hour before, his coaches would have been fooled into writing him off. But the lights came on and a sensational Q1 performance saw him score all 10 of the team's points. Coaches Rakitzis and Long agreed to field a stronger team in the 2nd period and the ploy worked as Woking finished the first half 21-12 ahead.
The second half became a tussle between Alexis and O'Brien which nearly boiled over if it wasn't for the expert handling of the situation by referee Liz Shakespeare.
With only O'Brien and Wellard providing any substantial threat, the Epsom challenge was never going to be enough for the well-drilled Blackhawks and Woking finished the day with another win to the delight of the coaches and travelling supporters.

Best performances came from Roshan Saund who scored 22 points and collected 38.5 MVP points, and Kris Obaseki with 21.8 MVP points.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (6), R Saund (22), C Butler, D Marshall (2), E Lewry, R Gardner, C Alexis (7), J Cerutti (3), C McAuliffe (6), E Ainsbury, A Taylor (2).

Woking never got going and pay the price
Woking Blackhawks - Spelthorne Atoms  29-36  (13-Jan-06)

Maybe it's the venue - I don't know. Could it be the lights, the flooring, the referees? No, I know! It was the wrong type of ball. The ball was too round - that's it.
Well, we could blame this performance on just about anything, but the truth is that Woking never got going. Perhaps the player selection had something to do with it but there was no chemistry on the court and often our best players tried to do it all themselves forgetting that there is no 'I' in 'Team'.

Best performances came from Justin Cerutti who scored 9 points and collected 16.5 MVP points, and Edmund Lewry (16 MVP points).

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (6), R Saund (2), D Marshall, C Butler, R Gardner, E Lewry (8), A Taylor, C McAuliffe (4), J Cerutti (9), L Msipha.

Hawks overcome Warriors to claim important victory
Woking Blackhawks - Maidstone Warriors  72-53  (18-Dec-05)

It started off as a close encounter but the 8-player Warriors team suffered as players started getting fouled out in the second half.
This is not meant to take anything away from the young hawks who managed to contain Maidstone's rampant Wright throughout the game. The good news was that the Woking offence, led by the sensational Kris Obaseki, did its job too.
The Blackhawks led 13-12 in the first period during which Dan Marshall had to come in as a blood sub for the brave Chris McAuliffe. The second five did a brilliant job to hold the Warriors at 9-9 in the second period during which, Woking lost Charlie Butler with 4 fouls.
Maidstone ran into foul trouble themselves as they progressively lost Jones, Tamuna and Mew. The road was now opening up for Obaseki's silky runs at the Warriors defence, occasionally peppered with Dan Marshall's darting drives. Edmund Lewry and Roshan Saund crashed the boards claiming 10 rebounds each!

Woking received a 5-point bonus because Maidstone could only field 8 players.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki who scored 34 points and collected a massive 67 MVP points (new club record for the under-14 age group), Edmund Lewry (33 MVP points) and Roshan Saund (27.5 MVP points).

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (34), R Saund (12), L Msipha, C Butler (1), D Marshall (6), E Lewry (12), R Gardner, R Alexis, G McAuliffe, C McAuliffe (2).

Towers cast their shadow over Woking
Woking Blackhawks - London Towers  46-73  (18-Dec-05)

It is during games such as this when one contemplates the pointlessness of playing against a team with such awesome superiority in sheer strength and size.
The first half finished 17-43 to the Towers and Woking were forced into three blood substitutions before coach Rakitzis decided to inject some sense into the proceedings by asking his counterpart to not use three of his biggest and most dangerous players. To his credit, Warren Bubb (the Towers coach) obliged, and a far more enjoyable game ensued.

Led by Kris Obaseki, the Blackhawks fought bravely and matched the Towers point by point to finish the second half 29-30.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki who scored 29 points and collected 46.5 MVP points, and Edmund Lewry (20 MVP points).

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (29), R Saund (4), L Msipha, C Butler, D Marshall, E Lewry (8), R Gardner, R Alexis, G McAuliffe (2), C McAuliffe (3).

Easy win for young hawks as they fly past Sunbury
Woking Blackhawks - Sunbury Sonics  47-24  (11-Dec-05)

Judging by the results to-date, the Blackhawks were not concerned about the outcome but more about putting together a competent performance; and that they did for the most part. Led by the unstoppable Obaseki, the young hawks led the first period 14-2 but some troublesome signs developed during the second period when the second five could not find their way to the basket at all, losing 7-0.
In the second half, normal service was restored, when Obaseki, Marshall, Saund, Lewry and Cerutti found their coordinates and hit their targets!

Woking received a 5-point bonus because Sunbury could only field 9 players.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki (MVP with 30.3 MVP points), Roshan Saund (20.5 MVP points),  Dan Marshall and Edmund Lewry.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (18), R Saund (4), A Taylor (2), C Butler, D Marshall (6), E Lewry (2), R Gardner, E Ainsbury (4), J Cerutti (6), Chris McAuliffe.

Blackhawks fight Fire with fire and win!
Woking Blackhawks - Brentwood Fire  49-41  (11-Dec-05)

Now this is the reason why players, coaches, parents, club and league officials come to love the game of basketball. Two motivated, competent and well-drilled teams took to the floor and fought it out point by point to a thrilling 3-point game that kept supporters from both sides on their toes 'till the end.
The young hawks finished the first quarter with a one-point deficit but the second five did a great job by winning the second quarter by the same margin.
Poised at 16-16 at half time, it was time to call upon the strength of Butler, Saund, Taylor and Lewry, and the silky skills of Obaseki and mount a challenge against the stronger and taller lads from Brentwood. Coaches Rakitzis and Long ran out of superlatives in their praises of these players who went on the court and fought Fire with fire!

In a game where two referees would have been one heck of a lot better than one, Woking received a 5-point bonus because Feltham could only field 9 players. In the end, the extra points were not needed because the Blackhawks won the game 44-41 fair and square anyway.

Best performances came from Edmund Lewry (MVP with 30.8 MVP points), Kris Obaseki (30 MVP points) and Ahmad Taylor (20.3 MVP points). It would be only fair to mention that Charlie Butler's strength was pivotal in this very physical encounter.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (11), R Saund (1), A Taylor (12), C Butler (3), D Marshall (1), E Lewry (6), R Gardner, E Ainsbury (6), J Cerutti (4), Chris McAuliffe.

Woking Blackhawks - Feltham  36-23  (09-Dec-05)

Coaches Rakitzis and Long fielded a reasonably strong squad in the first period and managed to contain a dangerous-looking Feltham team mainly through contributions from Obaseki and Cerutti. But the surprise tactics came in the second quarter when Ainsbury, Gardener, Fleming, Butler and Saund took to the floor and completely overpowered Feltham's second five 13-0. In the third quarter the young hawks maintained their superiority with Lewry, Saund and Taylor each scoring a basket while Obaseki went one better with a great 3-pointer. In the fourth quarter, Obaseki kept Woking in the picture while less experienced players were given the opportunity to enjoy some game time.

Woking received a 4-point bonus because Feltham could only field 9 players.

Best performances came from Kris Obaseki (MVP with 17.7 MVP points) and Justin Cerutti.

Blackhawks: K Obaseki (12), R Saund (4), A Taylor (4), C Butler (4), D Marshall, E Lewry (2), R Gardner, E Ainsbury (3), J Cerutti (3).
