U10s Triumph in their first-ever Tournament

Under-10 Spelthorne Atoms Tournament  (24/05/08)

Woking Blackhawks U10 boys played their first official basketball games as a team on Saturday, when they took part in an Under-10 tournament organised by Spelthorne Atoms, at the Matthew Arnold Sports Centre in Staines.

This was also the first outing for newly-qualified coach Samantha Betts who managed to find the right mix of game-coaching and allowing the little hawks an amount of freedom to enjoy themselves on the court.

The boys had to play four very good teams from Spelthorne Atoms, Kingston Wildcats, Guildford Heat and Sunbury Rockets. It was not going to be easy but the objective was to give the boys as much court time as possible and let them have as much fun as possible. That's what summer leagues are all about!

Against all expectations, this team went on to win all four of their games and team manager David Betts was happy to chat to parents  some of whom admitted their had never seen their children apply themselves to such a degree before. "These boys had a very good afternoon playing basketball and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They put everything they had into the games and came away from the tournament undefeated picking up medals for themselves and the first U10 trophy for the Club." Betts beamed after the final against the Atoms.

This was a truly remarkable performance by the little Blackhawks, who were a credit to the Club as they shone with their attitude off the court too. The future of basketball looks bright in Woking!

U12s Surprise Cobham to Claim 3rd Win in Last 4 Games

Woking Blackhawks - Cobham  22 - 15  (14/3/08)

On Friday, the Blackhawks U12 visited the Bracknell central venue, for their league game against well-drilled Cobham. There was an air of excitement from the boys on the back of their last win at Chessington and the buzz of the newest recruit Tolu Awojobi who stands 5ft 11inches tall.

The first five of Simon Post, Matthew Payne, Jasper Post, Shemray Paul and Ben Clifton tipped off. The home spectators, talking of the boys sixth win of this season, where soon silenced as the boys scratched around trying to combine with each other and despite a late rally and two baskets from Simon Post and one from Payne the boys ended the period 6-10 down.

It was ‘all change’ at the start of the second period with the introduction of Isaac Lamey and Joel Eggar who link well together, supported by Dom Vlassak, Noah Lucas and Tolu Awojobi making his first appearance for the Club. This period was more to what everyone was expecting with a lot of movement of the ball, some good solo breaks from Vlassak down the court and Awojobi’s height advantage making for some very impressive defensive and offensive rebounding. With baskets from Lamey and Awojobi the score for the second period was 8–3 thus establishing a 1-point lead for the Blackhawks (14-13) at the halfway point.

As it is customary, in the third period both coaches fielded their best squads and paid particular attention to defence, resulting in some purposeful marking and a very low score (2-0) for the quarter. These two valuable points came from free throws from Simon Post and Ben Clifton after some good work in the key. At the end of the third, the score stood at 16–13 with everything to play for in the last quarter.

As expected, both teams went all-out in the fourth chasing the valuable win. The frantic tempo stirred up the crowds that had now gathered around the court and the scene was set for an exciting finish. The Blackhawks were now in their stride, Cobham were playing some good basketball and spectators from both sides were kept on the edge of their seats. But it was Woking’s brilliant all-round performance that was rewarded with baskets from Clifton and Awojobi (2) claiming a 22-15 win to the delight of their supporters.

This win was the third in the last four games and was the young hawks’ sixth of the season. The future looks bright for basketball in Woking!

MVP was Tolu Awojobi with 12 rebounds and 8 points. Joel Eggar also impressed with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals and 2 points. Ben Clifton had a good game with 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 points.

Q1: 6–10      Q2: 8–3       Q3: 2–0       Q4: 6–2

Blackhawks: S Post (5), M Payne (2), I Lamey (2), J Eggar (2), T Awojobi (8), J Post, D Vlassak, S Paul, N Lucas and B Clifton (3).

u12s Make Heavy Weather of the Slammers

Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Slammers  25 - 12  (17/2/08)

The young Hawks emerged from the land of the giants a bit battered and bruised, for their second game of the morning at Chessington against a more balanced squad from Kingston Slammers.

The starting five of Payne, Johnson, Eggar, Lamey and Lucas took to the court with keenness about them off a team who thought they were going to win, but all they had learnt in training was forgotten as every thing they tried to put together failed, and they finished the quarter 6-2 behind.

The second quarter started with Bazin, Betts, Vlassak, Paul and Clifton. With this change Coach hoped something positive would happen and we would see a glimmer of the play and control we had seen in their first game against Towers.

But it was not to be, the boys’ heads were up, but they just did not play together. Amidst concerns that the first game had taken too much out of them, they did manage to finish the half conceding only two more baskets leaving them 10-2 down at half-time.

Whether it was a loss of focus in the hour between the two games and Coach’s half-time talk or the mental bonus of the 10 points added to Woking's score because the Slammers only had 8 players, the boys started the third quarter much better with Joel Eggar and Isaac Lamey reviving the old partnership. The Blackhawks tore into the Slammers with all the boys having a go at scoring but Joel Eggar impressed the most bagging 6 out of 10 attempts. There was good offensive and defensive rebounding by Clifton, Paul, Lamey, Lucas and Eggar but more encouraging was the brilliant team effort by all the players proving they can play well as a unit. Julian Carlsson received his first match experience since joining the club and shared in the excitement of the forth win of the season.

MVP was the unstoppable Joel Eggar with 13 points and 4 rebounds.

Q1: 2-6    Q2: 2-10      Q3: 16-12     Q4: 9-0

Blackhawks: Lucas, Clifton, Paul, Vlassak, Carlsson, Bazin, Lamey (2), Eggar (13), Johnson, Payne, Betts.

U12s overshadowed by the Towers

Woking Blackhawks - London Towers  32 - 45  (17/2/08)

After a controversial start the ever-feisty U12 Blackhawks took to the court to face much talked about London Towers. The Towers could only manage to put out six players but with the extra height advantage of two of them this was not going to be an easy game.

The starting five of Payne, Johnson, Eggar, Lamey and Lucas set about this daunting task with good pace but it immediately became apparent to Coach Costas that this was going to have to be a tactical game with the Towers’ two six-footers just picking of the high balls before they came out of the clouds giving the young Hawks no chance. Coach had to make a couple of changes before he got the balance of play by slowing Lamey down, up to the half way line and then Eggar driving forward very positively catching the Towers every time.

The second quarter started with Bazin, Betts, Vlassak, Paul and Lucas, Coach had decided during the break that as Towers had only brought the six players, he would try and cut the supply to the tall Towers players buy taking of their No 9, but the Towers where in their stride sinking another five baskets. With the taller players getting back to defend, any good work Woking did outside the key it was undone inside it. The half time score was Woking 8, Towers 21 with Woking not scoring a single point in this quarter.

Quarter 3 and 4 was much the same with Lamey and Eggar linking up well and some very good man to man marking by Vlassak but we could still do nothing against the extraordinary height advantage and the extra 20 bonus points for Towers only having the six players was soon swallowed up leaving the final score at 32 - 45 to Towers.

 Q1: 8-11    Q2: 0-10      Q3: 4-12     Q4: 0-12     Bonus: 20-0

 Blackhawks: N Lucas, B Clifton, J Paul, D Vlassak, S Carlsson, T Bazin, I Lamey, J Eggar (10), D Johnson, M Payne (2) and C Betts

U12s taste the sweet taste of a 2-point victory at Bracknell

Woking Blackhawks - Bracknell  17 - 15  (1/2/08)

With most players available, Coach Costas was able to select a strong squad to face a talented Bracknell side.

The first five (Brand, Lamey, Eggar, Vlassak and Lucas) felt the brunt of what might have been Bracknell's best five and despite a good performance,  the young Hawks went down 2-8 in the first quarter.

The second five (S Post, J Post, Bounds, Clifton and Shem Ray, who played his first game for the Club), took to the court under no illusions as to the task ahead. They had to make up the difference if Woking were to have any chance of winning this game. Fired up by their coach's encouraging words after an early time-out, the little Blackhawks did not disappoint.  They ran their offensive plays well and defended superbly to win the quarter 8-2. Order had been restored. It was now all square and the stage was set for an exciting 2nd half.

In the 3rd, both coaches put out their strongest squad and it soon became evident that they both concentrated on defence. After a hard-fought period the score stood at 13-14 and the supporters on their feet.

A tactical substitution and a shrewd change in the offensive play, took Bracknell by surprise and Woking scored two baskets in one minute, making the score 17-14. For the remaining 9 long minutes of play, the Blackhawks stole the ball 7 times but were unable to score. Their defence, however, was impregnable and allowed Bracknell only one point to finish the game 17-15 to the delight of more than 30 supporters.

Q1: 2-8      Q2: 8-2      Q3: 3-4      Q4: 4-1

Blackhawks: Simon Post (4), Remi Brand (2), Joel Eggar (2), Isaac Lamey, Jasper Post (5), Shem Ray, Thomas Bounds (2), Ben Clifton (2), Noah Lucas, Dominic Vlassak.

A mixed bag at Chessington but the good signs are there!

Woking Blackhawks - Epsom Rockets  55 - 32  (20/1/08)

Without three of their regular players, one might have thought that the Blackhawks would find it difficult to perform but that's not what our supporters saw during the first match against Epsom today.

When S Post, Payne, J Post, Clifton and Eggar took to the floor it became clear that they wanted to win. Simon Post led the charge scoring 4 great baskets and the Blackhawks were up 16-8 at the end of the 1st quarter.

According to the league rules, the remaining 5 players on the bench have to be used in the 2nd quarter and they did not disappoint holding the score to finish the half 26-20.

It was all about how the teams would perform in the 3rd so coach Costas Rakitzis, based on the first half performance, decided to field his most in-form players. It was hugely satisfying to see how these 9, 10 and 11-year old players gave such a disciplined and yet creative performance winning the quarter 14-2.

More of the same during the start of the 4th and with the win safely in the bag, everyone was given some valuable court time. At the final whistle the under-12 Blackhawks were celebrating their second win of their season to the delight of their parents.

MVP was the hugely likable Simon Post who scored 18 points. His brother Jasper also impressed scoring 10 points of his own. Dominic Vlassak' hassling earned him 19 .0 MVP points.

Q1: 16-8;   Q2: 10-12;   Q3: 14-2;   Q4: 5-10;   Bonus: 10-0 (Epsom were 2 players short).

Blackhawks: Jasper Post (10), Thomas Bounds (4), Simon Post (18), T Saunders, Joel Eggar (4), Matthew Payne (1), Toby Bazin, Ben Clifton (2), D Vlassak (4) and C Betts.

Woking Blackhawks - Sunbury Sonics  18 - 26  (20/1/08)

Following their great win against Epsom Rockets, the young Hawks were back on the court after only a 10 minute break.  Coach Costas started with his strongest five from the first game, but it was evident from the start that the splendid performance in the first game had drained a lot of strength out of them. Despite that, they gave a creditable performance to finish the 1st quarter only 1 basket behind.

In the second quarter, Coach had to swap all of his first five players for his 2nd five, who fought bravely against another fresh five from Sunbury Sonics. But the tired legs and bodies showed and even though they kept creating the chances the baskets would not sink for them. This quarter ended up 2 - 14 making it 6 – 20 at half time. A mountain to climb...

Well, the half time talk from Coach brought a new lease of life from the boys as they went out to give a magnificent display of true grit and determination. Woking were not going down with out a fight. They defended and attacked using the plays they were taught at training with tremendous effect. Credit to Sunbury whose good defensive work denied our forwards the easy basket. The young Hawks won these two quarters 6 – 4 and 6 – 2 making the final score a very credible 18 – 26.

Once again this was a great game of basketball played in the true spirit of the game, enjoyed by the parents who often found themselves on their feet or at the end of their seats anticipating a win.

Well done Coach and the boys for a brilliant performance.

Q1: 4-6;   Q2: 2-14;   Q3: 6-4;   Q4: 6-2.

Blackhawks: Jasper Post, Thomas Bounds, Simon Post (14), T Saunders, Joel Eggar (2), Matthew Payne, Toby Bazin, Ben Clifton, D Vlassak (2) and C Betts.

Two great performances and a NEW ALL-TIME Club RECORD!

Woking Blackhawks - Brentwood Fire Girls  42 - 53  (6/1/08)

The fact that the Brentwood girls had beaten Elmbridge by more than 60 points a few weeks ago was not going to deter the ever-improving Blackhawks.

The starting five did a great job at running the play they learned during yesterday's practice and gave the Fire something to think about finishing the quarter only two points down.

Things did not go to plan in the 2nd period though... The young hawks lost by 20 points and despite the 15 bonus points to which Woking were entitled because Fire were 3 players short, this was not going to be an easy mountain to climb.

Normal service was resumed in the 3rd and some great defending resulted in a positive 10-7 score. The scoreboard read 37-41 at the end of the 3rd period and hopes for a surprise win were being restored.

It was not to be. The Brentwood girls held their lead well into the 4th quarter and Coach Costas decided to give his bench a bit more court time to finish the game with a very respectable 42-53 score line.

MVP was Joel Eggar who had a superb game scoring 18 points (!) and getting 6 steals. Good performances by Simon Post and Isaac Lamey who between them got 12 of the Blackhawks' 17 rebounds. Ben Clifton did a great defensive job on Brentwood's much bigger and taller forward thus upsetting their game plan and keeping their score from rocketing.

Q1: 8-10;   Q2: 4-24;   Q3: 10-7;   Q4: 5-12;   Bonus: 15-0

Blackhawks: Jasper Post (3), Thomas Bounds, Simon Post (2), Isaac Lamey (4), Joel Eggar (18), Matthew Payne, Toby Bazin, Ben Clifton, Noah Lucas and William Humphrey.

Woking Blackhawks - Elmbridge  37 - 20  (6/1/08)

Now Elmbridge looked more like an under-12 team and the little Blackhawks were well up for it.

Despite going down 0-4 at the start, Woking dug deep and after a time-out the ship was steadied. Jasper Post showed what a good player he can be by scoring the first 8 points. Joel Eggar continued from where he had left in the previous game and added 4 of his own making the score 12-8 at the end of the first period.

It was the turn of the second five to do their job in the 2nd period and as both coaches turned to defence, the Blackhawks were happy to finish 4-2 up with baskets from Matthew Payne and Simon Post.

The third period was fiercely contested by both teams and despite the referees' reluctance to call the fouls, players from both teams kept their composure and treated their supporters to some good basketball. With two more baskets from Jasper Post and one from Joel Eggar and Isaac Lamey, the Blackhawks edged their way to another slender 8-6 finish and at the end of the 3rd they were 8 points up.

The atmosphere was now saturated with expectation for a win. Elmbridge scored first reducing the lead to 6 points but that was the point the young Blackhawks were stung into action and went on to score 10 points without reply, the last basket coming from a delightful pass from Noah Lucas to Simon Post who broke free to score. Elmbridge came back to score another basket but Woking scored another 3 of their own to finish the quarter 13-4 to the delight of their supporters.

There was something about this game, however, that felt sooo right. Having given away 25 turnovers in their previous game, these ever-improving youngsters set a new all-time Club record by giving away only 5 turnovers in this game. Well done boys! This is a record you may be proud of for a long time!

Most valuable player with 18.7 MVP points was Joel Eggar who pulled down 12 rebounds, scored 8 points and grabbed another 6 steals. Noah Lucas amassed 17.3 MVP points by recording 2 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocks and 7 rebounds.

Q1: 12-8;   Q2: 4-2;   Q3: 8-6;   Q4: 13-4.

Blackhawks: Chris Betts, Jasper Post (12), Thomas Bounds, Simon Post (8), Isaac Lamey (4), Joel Eggar (8), Matthew Payne (2), Toby Bazin, Ben Clifton (3), Noah Lucas and William Humphrey.

Blackhawks taste Chessington for the first time this season

The Blackhawks had their first experience in the Surrey Central Venue League this season at Chessington last weekend. It was a double header against Kingston Wildcats and Brentwood Fire.

Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Wildcats  04 - 71  (16/12/07)

In the first game against Kingston Wildcats the young hawks had a rather slow start. Could it have been the early (9am) tip? When they did get going, however,  there where some good attacks on the Kingston basket by Isaac Lamey, Jasper Post and Simon Post but only two where made to count. Kingston where quick on the break and Woking had to defend for a great deal of the game and Noah Lucas made good use of his height advantage. There where a number of steals by Dom Vlassak, Ben Clifton, Jasper and Simon and good all round support from Matthew, Toby, Tom and Chris. In the last quarter the Woking boys came good and really took the game to Kingston. Had they started in the same vain, the end result might have looked a bit better.

Blackhawks: Ben Clifton, Jasper Post (2), Matthew Payne, Simon Post (2), Thomas Bounds, Isaac Lamey, Dom Vlassak, Noah Lucas, Chris Betts, Toby Bazin.

Woking Blackhawks - Brentwood Fire  12 - 55  (16/12/07)

Another disappointing start to the second game especially after the way the young hawks had finished against Kingston and Andy Farmer, the stand-in coach for the day, had to call an early time out. That seemed to do the trick for a while but Brentwood kept piling on the pressure. Undeterred, the Blackhawks responded with 26 attempts on the basket but only 5 where converted by Simon, Jasper, Matthew and 2 by Isaac. Some smart screening by Chris Betts gave Woking the opportunity to break and put Brentwood under pressure. Jasper Post impressed from the charity line scoring 2 out of 2.  Good defending by everyone against very strong opposition kept the score to a respectable level. Noah, Thomas, Ben and Simon claimed some good defensive rebounds.

Blackhawks: Ben Clifton, Jasper Post (2), Matthew Payne, Simon Post (2), Thomas Bounds, Isaac Lamey (4), Dom Vlassak (2), Noah Lucas, Chris Betts, Toby Bazin (2).

NEXT GAMES (double header): Sunday 6 January, 10.30am at Chessington

Blackhawks Lose their Way and Get Caught by the Wildcats

Woking Blackhawks - Kingston Wildcats  8 - 41  (07/12/07)

Once again size played a major role in this contest but there is no denying that Kingston were better in just about every department.

MVP was Joel Eggar with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 16.2 MVP points.

Blackhawks: Ben Clifton, Jasper Post, Simon Post (2), Tom Saunders, Isaac Lamey (2), Dom Vlassak, Joel Eggar (2), Remi Brand, Noah Lucas, Daniel Johnson, William Humphrey.

Ever-improving u12s give good account against Reading

Woking Blackhawks - Reading Rockets  15 - 20  (23/11/07)

There were times during the match when some believed our under-12s could actually win the game but it was not to be.
Reading scored 6 points before Ben Clifton put some points on the board to end the first period 2-6.
In the second the Blackhawks put in a great defensive display to finish the quarter 2-0 thanks to a deep-two from 9-year old Isaac Lamey.
The great effort continued into the third as Woking took a 4-4 draw thanks to baskets from Lamey and Simon Post.
But the quality of the Reading team showed in the fourth when their best five scored 10 points to Woking's 5.

This was an encouraging performance by a young team that's learning with every game.

MVP was Simon Post (2 points and 17.0 MVP points). Top scorer was Joel Eggar with 5 points.

Blackhawks: Ben Clifton (2), Chris Betts, Jasper Post, Simon Post (2), Thomas Bounds, Isaac Lamey (4), Dom Vlassak, Joel Eggar, Matthew Payne, George Paisley

Brave Boys give a very good account of themselves

Blackhawks u12 - Blackhawks u14 Girls  20 - 40  (9 Nov 07)

A rather unfair contest when you have to play against opposition who are twice your physical size but the boys did well in their first game of the season.
What is quite remarkable is that they scored 20 points!
Still a long way to go but there is a lot of talent in this very young squad.

Blackhawks u12: C Betts, J Post (6), T Bounds (4), S Post (4), I Lamey, D Vlassak, J Edgar (4), M Payne, T Basin, B Clifton, R Brand (2), N Lucas.

Sonics to tough for Hawks...
 Blackhawks U12 - Sunbury Sonics 26-51
SCVL
 (01/04/07)

The young Blackhawks showed how much they have improved this season by still being able to put in an impressive performance against a physically stronger Sonics, despite being without key players.

The game was actually more even then the score-line suggests, but the ball would just not drop through the net for the Blackhawks.

They staged a great revival in the second half, using the speed of Tom O'Carroll combined with the strength and passing of Elliot Farmer. All the players gave 100% + effort to leave their supporters feeling pleased even though they lost the game. but just couldn't sustain the early momentum and tired towards the end of the period

MVP: Elliot Farmer

Q1: 0-10, Q2: 4-10, 2nd half: 22-29

Blackhawks: Tom O'Carroll(6), Elliot Farmer(10), Remi Brand, Laura Cox, Conor Smith(4), Mia Lloyd(4), James Morales, Filippo Di Paola(2), Ben Clifton, Matt Payne.

Victory at last!...
 Blackhawks U12 - Kingston Slam
48 - 31
SCVL
 (18/03/07)

After some great performances against tough opposition in the Surrey league, hopes were high for a victory against Kingston Slam, despite having already lost to them earlier in the season.

The team did not disappoint and once they took the lead early in the 2nd qtr they never looked like losing control of the game.

In an even 1st quarter, Blake Adamson (6 points) and Hugo Trimming (2 points) gave Blackhawks and early lead, but Slam's key player V. Nikpour was in fine form and kept his side in the lead 8 - 12 at the first break.

Blackhawks Coach Andy Farmer had tactically kept his 2 key players (Elliot Farmer and Alex Dean) to the 2nd qtr and they soon made an impressive mark on the game and Woking scored 14 points without reply to take a comfortable lead.

Every Blackhawks player made a great contribution in the second half as they started to enjoy the feeling of being in front.

Coach Farmer has selected Tom Andrews as his MVP for the game.

Top scorer was Elliot Farmer with 16 points, followed by Blake Adamson (12) and Alex Dean (8).

Q1: 8-12 Q2: 16-2 2nd half: 24-17

After such an impressive performance scoring 31 points against London Towers in their last match, it was expected that the young Blackhawks would notch up their first win of the season in the Bracknell league against bottom-placed Solent.

It was not to be and the Blackhawks never got of the ground, failing to score at all in Qtrs 2 and 3.

Q1: 2-8 Q2: 0-8 Q3: 0-5 Q4: 4-1

Towers shaken...
 Blackhawks U12 - London Towers 31-41
SCVL playoff
 (11/03/07)

The youngest team of Blackhawks just keep on improving this season. Against the London Towers in this playoff 1/4 Final they put on an awesome performance that kept them hard on the heels of their mighty opponents throughout the game. With a bit more luck around the basket, and if Elliot Farmer had been on his usual shooting form, the score would have been even closer.

It's not easy to single out individuals in what was very much a great all round team performance, but Coach Andy Farmer has awarded MVP to his younger brother Elliot ( no brotherly favouritism I am assured!) for the way in which he kept the Giant Tower player out of the game in a mammoth man-to-man struggle.

Blake Adamson was a tireless Captain as ever and Laura Cox and Misha Blair impressed in what was probably their best performances of the season.

The fact that more players scored baskets this week is also an indication of the all round team performance. Without a scoresheet or stats, the points below may not be accurate. If your points score below is wrong, let Keith know!

Blackhawks: Hugo Trimming(4), Isaac Lamey, James Morales(2), Blake Adamson(5), Elliot Farmer(5), Laura Cox, Conor Smith(4), Misha Blair(2), James Morales(2), Filippo Di Paola(2), Tom Bounds.

So close yet again...
 Blackhawks U12 - Kingston Wildcats A 33-39
SCVL
 (18/2/07)

Having lost to Kingston A by 50 points just 3 weeks ago at Bracknell, and then losing to Kingston B by 2 points last week, the young Hawks came out determined not to give the Kingston senior team another easy game.

Their determination paid off and Kingston were made to fight for every point in claiming a narrow victory.

The 6 point winning margin was unusually down to the 1st quarter performance, which in an evenly matched encounter Kingston won 6-12

The second quarter was again very even, with Kingston just edging this period by one point to win 4-5.

The half-time score was therefore 10 -17 to the Wildcats, with all to play for in the second half.  Blackhawks Coach Andy Farmer was able to put his best 5 on court to start this period and thanks to a run of baskets by Alex Dean, they narrowed the gap to just one point in the first 8 minutes of the period.

Bad luck then hit the Blackhawks... injuries to Dean and Morales, plus losing Captain Blake Adamson on 5 fouls, allowed Wildcats to grab the initiative and within 3 minutes they had opened up a 9 point lead again.

Undaunted, Dean when back on court and renewed his scoring partnership with Elliot Farmer in a brave attempt to take back control of the game. They pulled back 3 points and won the second half by one point, but despite this moral victory, Kingston had done enough to claim a narrow win.

Q1: 6-12, Q2:4-5, 2nd Half: 23-22

MVP & Top Scorer: Alex Dean (16)

Blackhawks: Hugo Trimming(4), Alex Dean(16), Isaac Lamey, James Morales(2), Blake Adamson(6), Elliot Farmer(3), Laura Cox(2), Conor Smith.

So close after great fightback...
 Blackhawks U12 - Kingston Wildcats B 29-31
SCVL
 (11/2/07)

After a run of heavy defeats the young Blackhawks were looking for victory in this match, but despite a magnificent fight-back in the second half they just lost out to the Wildcats.

The first quarter was very even with Field Goals from Alex Dean, Hugo Trimming and James Morales helping the Blackhawks to hold Kingston to one point advantage, 7-8.

The 2nd quarter started badly and Woking allowed Kingston to put up a run of 14 points without reply to put them ahead at half time 9-24.

With the freedom allowed by the second - half rules, Coach Andy Farmer was able to put his strongest team together, and with Elliot Farmer and Alex Dean on court at the same time, the Blackhawks started to dominate the game.

This seemed to motivate the rest of the squad and they all lifted their game magnificently throughout the period. Woking finished very strongly, putting 14 points on the board without reply at the end of the half to win it 20-7, just 3 points short of victory.  If only the match had lasted just a few minutes more!

10 year old Remi Brand played in his first ever match, put in a great deal of effort on court, and will have learned from this experience.

Q1: 7-8, Q2:2-16, 2nd Half: 20-7

Top Scorer: Hugo Trimming (10)

Blackhawks: Hugo Trimming(10), Alex Dean(9), Isaac Lamey, James Morales(4), Matt Payne, Elliot Farmer(6), Mia Lloyd, Laura Cox, Remi Brand.

Against what is probably the best team in the Surrey U12 league, the young Hawks put in a great first-half performance, but couldn't sustain it, as Brentwood upped the pace in the second half to run out easy winners.

The emphasis that Coach Parry has put on defence in training paid dividends early on as the Hawks limited the Fire to a slender 2 point advantage in quarter 1. The second period saw more of the same effort and at half-time Blackhawks were just 10 points adrift of their stronger and taller opponents.

With an injury to captain Blake Adamson, and with Brentwood really starting to play strong Basketball, Woking could not hold on for much longer and lost the second half heavily.

Q1: 4-6, Q2:4-12, 2nd Half: 2-36

Blackhawks: Hugo Trimming(4), Tom Bounds, James Morales, Matt Payne, Conor Smith, Mia Lloyd(2), Filippo Di Paola, Blake Adamson(4)

Cobham in different class to brave U12's ...

Blackhawks U12 - Cobham 12-84
SCVL
 (14/1/07)

Cobham were just high class in every department and continued there unbeaten run this season against the brave Blackhawks u12's.

With age and height advantage also in their favour, the well drilled Cobham side looked very sharp right from the tipoff and won the first qtr by 18 points, with Blake Adamson providing the single basket for the Blackhawks.

Qtr 2 was exactly the same pattern and Cobham won this period by 20 points to make the score at half-time 4 - 42 in their favour.

Woking Coach Andy Farmer could do nothing to stop the onslaught, but somehow managed to keep his side motivated throughout the game and to his teams great credit they never gave  up - showing great heart right to the final whistle.

The second half was lost 3 - 42, with 8 year old Matthew Payne scoring his first basket for the Blackhawks in only his second game.

Woking were awarded 5 points due to Cobham being a player short, but this was never going to make any difference to the outcome.

The positives for Woking from this game must be the fantastic attitude of their young, inexperienced team and the fact that these games will add to the players development.

Q1: 2-20 Q2: 2-22 2nd half: 3-42

MVP: Blake Adamson. A typically energetic Captain's performance.

U12's no match for Spelthorne ...
 Blackhawks U12 - Spelthorne Atoms 6-34
BCVL
 (12/1/07)

From the start it was obvious to most observers that this was not going to be the young Blackhawks night. The Spelthorne Captain, L. Wilson, was in fine form and led his well-drilled and typically aggressive Atoms side to a comfortable win. On this performance it is hard to understand why this was their first victory of the season at Bracknell.

In contrast the Hawks captain, Blake Adamson, could find no way past the tight well-organised Spelthorne defence and many of his driving runs hit a brick wall. To the Blackhawks credit they gave a typically gutsy performance and managed to hold the Atoms to just a 6 point lead at the end of the first quarter but failed to score themselves.

It was qtr 2 where Spelthorne really put points on the board, with O'Connell grabbing 12 points to give his side an 18 point lead at half time. The only Woking points coming from Tom Andrews.

Despite the effort of Adamson, Blackhawks continued to fair no better in the second half, although they did manage to keep the points gap down to just 8, thanks to 2 baskets from Hugo Trimming.

Highlight of the game for Woking was to see 8 year old Matthew Payne making his debut for the club and putting in a creditable performance against elder opponents. One to watch for the future!

Q1: 0-6 , Q2: 2-16, Q3: 2-7 Q4: 2-5

MVP: Blake Adamson - Phenomenal workrate - never giving up.

Blackhawks: Adamson, Trimming(4), Bounds, Morales, Payne, Blair, Hardman, Smith, Cox, Di Paola, Andrews(2)

U12's slump against Slam ...
 Blackhawks U12 - Kingston Slam 26-46
SCVL
 (10/12/06)

A weakened Blackhawks side started off lively enough in the first quarter and were 8 - 4 in front with 2 seconds to go, when the Kingston Slam number 11 (Nikpour) went for a wild 3-pointer from near the half court line which flew into the basket for the period to end 8-7!. At this stage the hawks still looked favourites to win.

However, the second quarter was a disaster for the Blackhawks second 5, who hardly got near the basket and slumped to a 16-0 deficit to make the score at half-time 8-23 to Kingston and an uphill task now faced the Woking side.

Captain Blake Adamson and Hugo Trimming worked tirelessly in the second half to try and get their side back in the game, but couldn't do it all on their own, and although the period ended with a respectable 5 point loss to the Blackhawks, the damage had been done.

It was really nice to see 8 year old Robert Crockford playing in his first ever game. Undaunted by the superior age, size and experience of the opposition, he put in a great performance, earning himself 4th MVP behind the 3 players below. One to watch for the future!

Q1 8-7 , Q2 0-16, Q3/4: 18-23

MVP: Blake Adamson (22.7) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Good performances also from Hugo Trimming (21.0) and Mia Lloyd(10.5)

Blackhawks: Adamson(14), Trimming(10), Bounds, Morales, Lloyd(2), Crockford, Smith, Lamey, Di Paola.

U12's no answer to Reading ...
 Blackhawks U12 - Reading 4 - 24
BCVL
 (08/12/06)

Against a well organised Reading team, and with key players Blake Adamson and Hugo Trimming having a quiet game by their own standards, this proved  a very difficult game for the young Hawks and they were 0-15 down at half-time.
They did win the third qtr 2-1 though!

Q1: 0-7, Q2:-8, Q3:2-1, Q4:2-8.

MVP: Blake Adamson . With only 7 MVP an indicator of a quiet game.

Blackhawks: Adamson(4), Trimming, Bounds, Morales, Blair, Hardman, Eggar, Lamey, Di Paola, Andrews.

Great defence not enough...

Blackhawks U12 - Blackhawks U14 girls 8-28
BCVL
 (10/11/06)

This was never going to be an easy game against a team from the same club, who we know to be strong contenders in the U12 league this season.

They also had a considerable height advantage at the basket!

After a disappointing first quarter, the younger Hawks switched tactics and ran a solid defence at the halfway line, and created chances on the break. Nervousness around the basket however meant missed chances to reduce the point gap.

An enjoyable game played in a nice atmosphere that enabled us to give some players on both sides their first taste of match action.

So overall some real positives to take away from this game.

MVP: tba

Blackhawks: Adamson, Trimming, Bounds, Blair, Hardiman, Johnson, Smith, Lamey

2 great games by the U12's in double -header at Chessington!!

First win of the season....
 Blackhawks U12 - Epsom Rockets 38-27
SCVL
 (05/11/06)

At last a game against opposition of the same size!

The 8 young Blackhawks were always in control of this game and won the game play by 16 points, but had that reduced at the end due to a 5 point penalty for being 2 players short.

The Blackhawks starting five of Blake Adamson, Misha Blair, Tom Bounds, Mia Lloyd and Hugo Trimming were in control from the start, but were unlucky around the basket, and only led at the end of Q1 7-2.

Q2 saw Conor Smith, James Morales and Filippo DiPaola starting and they managed to pile on the points to win the Quarter 13-2 and put the Hawks 20-4 up at half time.

The second half saw Adamson take control and his 10 points with only 2 in reply increased the lead to 26 points at one point during the period.

At this point in the game, the hawks seemed to decide to let Epsom have the ball for a while, and they netted 10 points without reply to give them the satisfaction of winning the second- half 23-18. Luckily the damage had been done in the first half, and the u12's notched up their first win of the season, with Coach Andy Farmer well pleased with the victory.

Q1: 7-2, Q2: 13-2, 2nd half:18-23

MVP: Blake Adamson (14 points)

Blackhawks: Blake Adamson(14), Hugo Trimming(8), Conor Smith, Misha Blair, Filippo Di Paola(4), Thomas Bounds(4), Mia-Jean Lloyd(3), James Morales(5).

And then came the Towers....
 Blackhawks U12 - London Towers 30-53
SCVL
 (05/11/06)

Any thoughts that the Hawks were going to be over-awed meeting last years champions , or that they were tired from their previous game were soon dismissed as they matched the Towers point for point during Q1 and kept the score within 3 points at the end (8-11) with 6 points from captain Blake Adamson and another 2 from Hugo Trimming.

The second 5 from each team were also evenly matched and although Blackhawks lost the quarter 2-6, the half-time score of 10-17 to Towers had Woking supporters muttering of a famous victory against their mighty opponents.

Disaster struck the Blackhawks early in the second half when Adamson picked up 2 personal fouls in quick succession to put him on 4 fouls. Coach Andy Farmer had no option but to bring him off, and with it went their main threat.

Towers Coach Warren Bobb kept his big 5 on during this period and took full advantage of Woking being without their Captain to increase the lead and put the game out of reach for the Blackhawks.

The difference that Adamson would have made was evident when he came back on the court later in the period, scoring 12 points himself and linking up well with Hugo Trimming for him to score 6. Blackhawks were starting to tire towards the end and Towers hit them with fast break after fast break to win the second half 20-35.

The whole Blackhawks team put in an enormous amount of heart and effort in this game, never gave up, and earned themselves a great round of applause from their supporters as they left the court. They should all be justly proud of their performance.

Praise must also go to young Coach Andy Farmer for keeping his team going throughout and getting the very best out of them in a difficult match.

MVP goes to James Morales. His effort and work-rate were magnificent as he battled for every ball in defence and offence grabbing 4 steals, 1 block and 5 rebounds.

Blackhawks: Blake Adamson(18), Hugo Trimming(10), Conor Smith, Misha Blair, Filippo Di Paola, Thomas Bounds, Mia-Jean Lloyd(2), James Morales.

SCVL
 (15/10/06)

Out-sized by the opposition yet again,  these young Hawks are finding it hard work so far this season, but you cannot fault their effort, heart or enthusiasm.

The biggest encouragement must come from their second-half performance which they only lost by 2 points (16-18).

For the second game in a row, the tireless Blake Adamson was the key player for the Blackhawks with 13 points on the board. The only other player to score any points was Hugo Trimming who paired up well with Adamson to get 7 points of his own.

Thanks must go to Andy Farmer as Coach, he did a great job in organising the team and keeping them going, and Elliot Farmer for doing the stats.

Still some growing to do!.....
 Blackhawks U12 - Bracknell 6-30
BCVL
 (13/10/06)

The age and height difference between these 2 sides was evident from the start, and if that wasn't enough, the Bracknell side had the advantage of playing together as a team last season.

Once again the effort and determination of the young Blackhawks could not be questioned, and they will have learnt from the experience.

Blake Adamson gave a true Captains performance, never gave up trying, and scored the 6 points his team put on the scoreboard.

Good performances also from the two new girls in the side, Ellie Hardman (in her first ever match) and Misha Blair.

MVP: Blake Adamson

Blackhawks: Blake Adamson(6), Hugo Trimming, Conor Smith,  Thomas Andrews, Misha Blair, Isaac Lamey, Filippo Di Paola, Thomas Bounds, Ellie Hardman.

Great effort in first match.....
 Blackhawks - Cobham 15-23 (22/09/06)

With only 2 weeks of training and a new batch of young players in the squad, this was always going to be a difficult match for the Blackhawks U12's.  Coach Parry had only 11 match-ready players to choose from and 5 of them had never played in a competitive match before.
As it turned out, he and they can all be very proud of the effort they put in to this game, and it was only in the last qtr that Cobham were able to make their extra height and experience make the difference.

Cobham took advantage of being 3 players short of a team in the 2nd quarter by being able to field 3 of their better players from the 1st quarter. The 6 point "fine" they got for this only just cancelling out the deficit at half time.

Hugo Trimming, one of those in his first match, gets my vote as MVP, with his 6 points being the majority that the Hawks scored in open play.  Captain Blake Adamson scored 2 and the other 1 came from a Thomas Andrews free throw.

Blackhawks: Blake Adamson(2), Hugo Trimming(6), Conor Smith, James Morales, Thomas Andrews(1), Misha Blair, Mia Lloyd, Isaac Lamey, Filippo Di Paola, Thomas Bounds.

New season starts this Saturday!

Here we go.... the new season starts with practice on Saturday 9th September at Woking High School as normal. Please note the new times of 9am - 11am.

I am very pleased to say that Phil Parry has offered to Coach the U12's this season following the departure of Jim back to the states.
Phil is one of our senior coaches who also trains our ladies and girls teams. Some of you will remember Phil as he covered Jim for a couple of sessions last year. Andy Farmer has volunteered to be assistant coach next season as James is off to University. Andy also helped with some coaching last year and was the U16 boys MVP and Top Scorer. This season he will play full time in the Hunters mens squad.

The U12 team will compete in both Bracknell and Surrey CVL leagues as per last season. The Team Manager position for the U12's is still vacant. Currently we are planning to cover this on best endeavours by the rest of the committee- anybody interested in helping please let us know!

Win one, Lose one against Heat (28/4/06)
Friendly

Friday 28th saw the young Blackhawks play 2 friendly games against Guildford Heat u12's ( formerly known as Bracknell!).
These were the first matches for a while, but it was pleasing to see that the players have continued to improve and they played some great passing basketball.

Blackhawks dominated the first mini-match and won it 20 - 8.
The second match was more even, and despite leading for most of the game, Blackhawks let it slip towards the end, and as time ran out, ended up losing 11-14.

Both teams enjoyed the encounter and we will be looking to play hosts to Heat in early September for another friendly.

Blackhawks: Alexis, Farmer, Denenny, Barber, Cranstone, Andrews, Morton, Lloyd, Di Paola, Jones, Smith.

3rd place in Army Warrior Tournament(25/2/06)

Woking 'A 'finished in 3rd place with 4 wins and 2 losses. Quite an improvement over last year, and a mark of how far this team has come in 12 months.

All the players demonstrated good attitude, behaviour and performance and were wonderful ambassadors for the club.

A great day that was enjoyed by players, officials and supporters.

Coach Denenny said..." I think we could have won this tournament if we had been at full strength the whole day. It really hurt that we lost Blake Adamson for the two toughest games of the day due to his hockey practice and Elliot Farmer was injured in the warm-up - even though he tried to gut it out and play some of the games. Even with those obstacles we only lost to the tournament winners, Kingston A, by 3 points. With our short-handed squad I think we would have won that one if they had played with a stopping clock in the 4th quarter -we definitely had them on the ropes. This is the same Kingston A team that beat us 66-8 less than 2 months ago. We played almost as well against Spelthorne, losing by 9 despite Alex Dean fouling out at the beginning of the second quarter (they only allowed 3 fouls today). We also lost to this team less than 2 months ago, 40-7. I'm very proud of the way the kids played and excited to see the improvement that they're making.

The B's had a tougher day, as expected. But what a great experience for them all. We had 2 players who had never played in a game before. One of those kids played in 6 games just today. I saw improvement throughout the day in the games I was able to watch, except when they finally ran out of gas (petrol?) at the end of the day. Without exception, everyone of the players I spoke to said they had a lot of fun and that they really liked playing in the games. Even Daniel Johnson (8yrs old) overcame his nerves and got on the court for 2 games. Afterwards he told me how much loves basketball now. That kind of stuff makes all the time and effort well worth it".

Blackhawks A: Barber, Dean, Denenny, Adamson, Lucas, Alexis, Cranstone, Farmer.
Blackhawks B: Kendall, Morton, Di Paola, Lloyd, Morales, King, Andrews, Smith, Johnson.

Great victory in last match.....
 Blackhawks - Sunbury Sonics 37-22 (12/02/06)

The Blackhawks players and supporters all went away from this match with a well-deserved big smile on their faces. Although some faces were a bit sore!

This was an evenly matched and enjoyable game, spoilt only by one Sonics player who took his coaches instructions a bit to literally.

But to concentrate on the good stuff...

Qtr1 was low scoring, with Coach Denenny wondering if the ball was ever going to drop through the net, or continue to just run around the rim. The hustle and shooting were there in abundance, but the points would not go on the board.  The points started to come in qtr2 for both sides and at half time the match was evenly balanced.

In the second half the Blackhawks started to apply the pressure. The shots began to go in, the defence was sound, and they soon opened up a 9 point lead. They never looked like losing this advantage, despite the knocks and bumps that came in this period, and in the end the win seemed comfortable.

The statistics really tell the story of this game with Woking having 63 attempts at basket but only making 14!

Rebounds were high with 16 defensive and 13 offensive won.

This was a good, brave all round team performance, but special mentions go to Tate Barber for his 13 points and to Ryan Alexis, who was a continuous threat to the Sonics, for remaining so cool under intimidation.

Q1:3-4, Q2:10-10, 2nd half: 19-8. plus 5 bonus points.

Blackhawks: Barber(13), Denenny(7), Adamson(1), Obaseki, Jones, Lucas(2), Andrews(2), Alexis(7), Farmer, Kendall, Morton, Koh.

A familiar tale.....
 Blackhawks - Brentwood Fire 21-72 (05/02/06)

There must be something in the water in Essex that produces such physically mature children by year 7 !. Brentwood also proved what a farce the Surrey CVL league rules really are fielding just 6 of these skilful "mature for their age" players against a Blackhawks squad of 12 true "year 7 and unders".  This move allowed Fire to keep pretty much the same team on for the whole match and only be penalised for this by 5 points - hardly a dis-incentive!

Enough of the reporters moans - how did the young Hawks play?

The first 5 of Dean, Farmer, Jones, Adamson, and Alexis were magnificent, putting in one of the best quarter performances seen this year.  With sharper-shooting Woking would have won the quarter even against this stronger side, but it finished 2 - 8.
The second qtr saw Denenny, Obaseki, Lucas, Barber and Cranstone also put in a hustling performance, but Fire were now starting to make their presence felt and won the qtr 2 -18 to extend their half-time lead to 22 points.
The second half started with Kendall and Smith in the game, but they also could make no headway against the more experienced team.

Coach Denenny should be pleased with the progress his squad is making, but there are still learning points to take back to practice.

Q1:2-8, Q2:2-18, 2nd half: 12-46. plus those 5 points!

Blackhawks: Dean, Barber(4), Denenny(2), Smith, Adamson, Obaseki, Jones, Lucas(2), Cranstone, Alexis(8), Farmer, Kendall.

Just held on.....
 Blackhawks - Bracknell 14-10 (27/1/06)

In an evenly-matched, low-scoring game it was great to see the smiles on the young hawks faces as they notched up a win in their last match of the season at Bracknell.

Q1:1-2, Q2:9-4, Q3:2-0 Q4:2-4.

Blackhawks: Dean(5), Barber, Denenny(1), Lloyd, Adamson, Obaseki(6), Jones, Lucas(2), Cranstone, Andrews.

Young Hawks show their big hearts...
 Blackhawks - London Towers 12-107 (20/1/06)

Coach Denenny and the Woking supporters can feel immensely
proud of their young players as they never gave up trying in a match that was never a "match" in terms of scoring ability.

The effort and heart demonstrated by the whole team was a pleasure to watch, with many of the moves practised in training starting to be seen on the court.

Only losing Q2 by 18 points seemed like a victory against such a very skilful free-scoring Towers side. This was short-lived though,  and in the second half the Towers turned it on again - even shooting 3-pointers! Amazing to see as this young age.

Q1:0-27, Q2:2-20, second half: 5-60.

The Blackhawks were awarded 5 points for the Towers being a player short.

Blackhawks: Alexis, Dean(4), Barber, Denenny, Farmer, Adamson, Obaseki(1), Jones, Lucas(2), Cranstone, Kendall.

Still a way to go...
 Blackhawks - Spelthorne 7 -40 (13/1/06)

The young Blackhawks certainly don't lack effort or spirit,  and they never gave up in this match against a Spelthorne team that were just too strong and consistent under the basket.
Coach Denenny will have the squad on shooting practice at training this week!

As in previous games the first half was the strongest and the Hawks were only 12 points down at half time, but the warning signs were there and in Q3 they fell behind by a further 16 points.

Nice to see Ross Jones scoring in his first ever match and he added 2 steals and 3 rebounds to round off a good first outing.

Blackhawks: Alexis(2), Dean, Barber, Denenny, Farmer(2), Adamson, Obaseki(1), Jones(2), Kokossis, Cranstone, Andrews, Morton.

disappointing final result...
 Blackhawks - KingstonA 8-66 (8/1/06)

Against a typically aggressive and skilful Kingston side, the young Hawks played fantastically in the first 2 quarters to hold their opponents to a 2 - 14 scoreline. With more luck under the basket for the Blackhawks, the score could have been even.

In the second half we lost steam, and Kingston scored at will with layup after layup hitting the target.

Coach can be pleased with the effort all the players demonstrated, but plenty to work on in practice.

In his first game for the club, Caspar Lucas showed potential and will improve with confidence and match practice.

Fantastic Team Performance!...
 Blackhawks - Hart  22-23 (9/12/05)
(Won 20-0 by default)

This match was forfeited to the Blackhawks before the start due to Hart needing over-age players in order to make up a team. As it was the young Hawks found themselves up against a much bigger side, and fought fantastically to take the match into overtime with the score at 22-22 at the end of Q4. Losing by just one free throw in the extra minute.

Coach impressed with team effort...
 Blackhawks - Cobham  23-40 (4/12/05)

Despite the final score, this was the young Blackhawks best overall effort (at least in the coaches opinion). If not for a major defensive breakdown by a couple members of the team that played the second quarter, the outcome of this game could have been different.  The first unit started the game off very strong, playing tough defence, dominating the boards and equalling Cobham, 8 all on the scoreboard. Cobham outscored Woking 16-0 in the second quarter. In the second half Woking came out strong again and kept fighting hard despite the big hole caused by the second quarter breakdown. Many players contributed to the second half effort in which Woking again played Cobham even, 15-16. This is another lesson for the Blackhawks. If one or two players do not hustle and play defence it hurts the entire team. There were many positives in the game including Woking's strongest rebounding and defensive effort overall. The shooting and screening were also much improved. These are all very positive signs. Ryan Alexis had his strongest game of the season with outstanding rebounding, tough defence, improved shooting, and some nice passes to go along with his game-high 7 points. Alex Dean played another very strong game again showing good court vision and contributing 6 points.

Blackhawks: Alexis(7), Dean(6), Barber(4), Denenny(2), Farmer(2), Adamson(2), Obaseki, Cranstone, Morton, Kendall, King, Koh

Lost out to aggression...
 Blackhawks - Kingston A  8-28 (25/11/05)
Another good effort but a tough night overall for the young Blackhawks. Continued unlucky shooting and giving up too many lay-ups to a Kingston team that was very good at making them pretty much sums up the game. The defence overall was OK but there were consistent breakdowns by 1 or 2 players at a time that led to the easy lay-ups for Kingston. The rebounding was better in this game with just about everyone contributing. Blake Adamson had a very strong game with 6 points and solid defence. Scott Kendal sank his first basket of the season - It was a pretty bank shot from the left side on a nice assist from Austen Denenny. The coaches tried to get a motion offence going but it again proved to be overly ambitious. A few players showed some nice screening including Elliot Farmer, Scott Kendall and Daniel Cranstone. Shooting and defence will be a focus of practice the next 2 weeks before the next games.

Blackhawks: Adamson(6), Kendall(2), Alexis, Dean, Barber, Kokossis, Farmer, Denenny, King, Koh, Lloyd, Cranstone

Low flying hawks..
 Blackhawks - Reading Rockets  10-15 (18/11/05)

This game was very similar to the last game against Seven Oaks. The Blackhawks fought hard and gave a good over all effort but came up short in a close match up. Once again, defensive breakdowns, especially by some of newer, less experienced players, allowed some easy baskets to a Reading team that proved to be skilled at making their lay-ups. Reading controlled the boards in the first half but Woking showed a lot of pride in the second half and held their own against a taller Reading squad. Olivia Obaseki, Tate Barber, Alex Dean and Ryan Alexis lead the way on the boards. Alex Dean had a strong game and showed good court vision with several nice passes throughout the game. Danae Kokossis also played solid in her first game in the Bracknell league. As was the case in the last game, close shots at the basket wouldn't fall in for the Blackhawks. The coaches also got a little ambitious with the motion offense that relies heavily on solid and continuos screening. We will have to give the players a few more opportunities to practice that before expecting to see better results.

Blackhawks:Obaseki, Kokossis, Andrews, Morales, Smith, Farmer, Denenny, Alexis(4), Dean(4), Barber(2), Koh

Blackhawks eclipse Suns...
 Blackhawks - Sevenoaks Suns  21 -20 (13/11/05)

The Blackhawks benefited from a 5-point penalty on Seven Oaks - for not having enough players - to squeak out a victory in this one. While the young Blackhawks were actually out-scored on the court, they played well and for the most part out-played the Seven Oaks team. Woking got off to a fast start taking an early 10-2 lead. However, defensive breakdowns and numerous unlucky shots at the basket allowed Seven Oaks to get back in it and eventually take the lead. Woking was dominated on the boards in the first half but fought much harder in the second half with Ryan Alexis, Tate Barber, Blake Adamson and Austen Denenny contributing to the rebounding turnaround. Man-to-man defence and boxing out for rebounds will continue to be a primary focus in upcoming practices. Tate Barber played a very good game with 10 rebounds and 6 points. Austen Denenny played the entire game at point guard and did a good job distributing and protecting the ball while also contributing 6 points. Ryan Alexis played another strong all-around game (defence, rebounding) and had many good shots at the basket that just wouldn't go in. Blake Adamson and Daniel Cranstone also helped the team with their hustle. It was not the most satisfying victory but we'll take it.

Blackhawks:Barber(6), Koh(2), Adamson(2), Cranstone, Lloyd, Morton,  Denenny(6), Alexis, Kendall,Obaseki,Smith

Blackhawks battle against strong Solent...
 Blackhawks - Solent  5 -27 (14/10/05)

This match was a learning experience for the young Blackhawks. Solent were bigger, faster and stronger than Woking in this one. They also wanted it more and showed it with their hustle and rebounding. The bright spot of the game was that Woking didn't quit after falling behind 17-0 at half-time and even came back to win Q3 3-2 (morale victory). However, Woking weren't able to keep it up as Solent poured it on again in the Q4 to put the Hawks away. Solent showed the young Blackhawks how they should be playing and practicing. It's up to us now to grow from this humbling experience.

The Blackhawks faced off against a much-improved Kingston B squad in out first game in the Surrey CVL. The Blackhawks emerged victorious in what turned out to be a back-and-forth battle that included several lead changes. Led by Ryan Alexis and Mia Lloyd (playing in her first game ever), the Blackhawks jumped out to an 8-5 lead after one quarter. The second unit couldn't keep up the momentum and the second quarter ended with Kingston leading 19-8. The 3rd quarter belonged to the Blackhawks as they were led by Tate Barber, Ryan Alexis and Alex Dean who put Woking ahead to stay at 22-21. The comeback win was very impressive for the young Blackhawks who refused to get discouraged after falling behind early in the game. Danae Kokossis and Mia Lloyd had strong performances in their first league games. Connor Smith also showed noticeable improvement.

Blackhawks:Alexis(8), Dean(8), Barber(6), Lloyd(4), Farmer(2), King(2), Morton(2), Kokossis(2), Morales, Kendall, Smith, Koh

Blackhawks - Tasis  24 -43 (09/10/05)

In the second of back-to-back games, the young Blackhawks couldn't keep up with a fresh group of Tasis players. Coach and parents were proud of how the players didn't quit after falling behind 19-6 in the first half. Even after Tate Barber fouled out at the beginning of the second half, the Blackhawks kept fighting and got within 10 points late in the second half before running out of steam. Alex Dean had an excellent game and along with Ryan Alexis and Elliot Farmer provided the bulk of the offensive punch for Woking. James Morales and Scott Kendall showed significant improvement in their second games. This one is on the coach for agreeing to a last minute schedule change to help the league out that resulted in a tired Woking team that couldn't keep up with a rested Tasis squad.

Blackhawks:Dean(7), Alexis(6), Farmer(6), King(2), Koh(2), Tate(1), Morales, Kendall, Lloyd, Morton, Kokossis, Smith

Blackhawks - KingstonB  22-6 (30/9/05)

The youngest members of the Woking Blackhawks got their first season of league play off to a roaring start. From top to bottom all 12 players showed great hustle and energy resulting in a fantastic 22-6 victory over the Kinston B squad. Rufus King set the tone with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and one basket for good measure. He continues to live up to his reputation as Mr Hustle when things really count. Also contributing to the great team win were leading scorers (6pts) Austen Denenny and Olivia Obaseki, Elliot Farmer (2 assists, 4 pts) and Ryan Alexis (3 steals). The improvement of the team and many of the individual players over last year was also very noticeable, namely inspired performances from Jack Morton and Daniel Cranstone. This was only the first game and there is still much opportunity to improve as the season goes on. Great start, though. Way to go Blackhawks U12's!!

Blackhawks: Farmer, Andrews, Denenny, Barber, Alexis, Obaseki, Adamson, Morton, King, Koh, Cranstone, Smith.
